You're watching rock royalty. The first Meatloaf album(Bat Out Of Hell) is one of the best selling albums of all time. I highly recommend you check out the title track. Jim Steinman, who wrote all the lyrics and music was a songwriting genius. There's only 7 songs on the album but every one is a masterpiece.
So true; in the 70s I had the album and played it all the time. In the 80s I had it on cassette tape, I had it on CD in the 90s, and even to this day I have it on my playlist lol. Never gets old.
Despite how much it rocks, which it certainly does, it almost seems more fitting for Broadway than the record store. It'd feel more appropriate for it to win a Tony than a Grammy. Hell, throw in Meatloaf's performance on stage and the resulting music videos, it could practically garner an EGOT all on it's own, if it was ever released in theaters.
No matter who was about to sing, as soon as I heard the first few chords, I would instantly recognize a Jim Steinman song. It was obvious to me instantly with "All Coming Back to Me" and my friends couldn't understand how I knew, while I, on the other hand, couldn't understand how they could not realize the genius of his style.

I think the song is a universal experience. Every guy and every girl has been there. 17 years old, parked at night and making out with teenage hormones going crazy. Yes, I had the same experience while parking, but I already had been with my boyfriend for awhile, but we laughed about how true to nature the lyrics are, in any age, between a guy and girl, and coming of age! Those were good times and we did grow up in an amazing time! I was in college in the early 90s and when this came on at a party, everyone would be signing it at the top of their lungs, dancing around. Some songs hold the test if time. Even these young men seem to like it, over 40 years later. I would like them to do 2 out of 3 Ain’t Bad as well.
I was lucky enough to meet him. The summer of 79 at age 12, I visited my sister in NYC. She was a waitress at Barrymore's, a restaurant/bar in the Theater District. I sat at the bar during her shift. Sometimes she sent me off to Broadway shows with some of her theater friends or let me walk to a movie. One day, Meatloaf sat right next to me. We had a nice chat while I drank cokes and ate olives from the garnish set-up. He was super sweet. I'll never forget that.
Back in the day, when you were driving and the DJ announced after the commercial break, they would be back with Meatloaf but didn't say which song it would be, it didn't matter - you didn't switch to another station because you knew whatever song it was, it was going to be incredible. He just had an off the charts level of energy, much the way Queen did. Some people do more than sing, they own the stage the moment they step on it, and he did, without fail.

So much American culture packed into this song that today's listeners miss. The song was written following a discussion between Jim Steinman (who wrote most of Meat Loaf's songs) and Meat Loaf about the night Meat Loaf lost his virginity parking near a lake. Steinman took off from there, changing the story a bit to make it more interesting. The song was released in 1977, so 'present day' in the song is 1977 and starts out as telling a memory of when this middle-aged couple in 1977 were 17yrs old in 1960. The music is written in the style of 1960 rock and roll, to help put you right into the experience. In that time, teens went parking in a car the boy had usually bought secondhand and fixed up or had borrowed for the night from the family. While the couple made out, they often left the radio on and the dashboard provided a dim light inside the car. The poetry of the song title refers to the nakedness of the girl revealed in that wash of dim light from the dashboard, and for the teenaged boy seeing her unclothed and available was definitely 'Paradise', or promised to be. Things get hot and heavy. The radio is playing a baseball game, which they likely have on low volume. The cleverness of the song is matching the action to the way sexual activity was referenced at the time: 1st base, 2nd, 3rd, and home. But also, another cultural convention of the time, was how boys and men used baseball statistics or visualizations of game play to distract themselves, to prolong their ability to maintain an erection. The young couple gets almost to 'home base' when the girl stops him and demands commitment. And he responds in a sweet ballad musical format, to let him 'sleep on it'; he means 'let me do the deed, then we'll talk later'. He's worked up and needs relief! This is the night, the event, that let's him finally experience sex for the first time! But here's another cultural convention: for the boy, sex was expected and celebrated; for the girl, it can ruin her life. This is 12 years before legal and safe abortion, a time before the invention of the birth control pill, a time where many states would not sell birth control to unmarried persons, and never to teenagers. This was a time when girls getting pregnant could be kicked out, when single women had a hard time finding employment, when single women with children could legally be refused rental apartments by landlords. And even if a girl didn't end up pregnant, she did get a 'reputation' and would have trouble getting a boyfriend and later a husband. There's very little up side to letting the boy have his way. It wasn't a matter of being conniving or demanding, just realistic. So she wants a guarantee, he wants sexual relief, and he finally promises to marry her. And to his credit, he follows through. The song then returns to 'present day' (1977) with this 34yr old couple in the middle of an argument. The argument had led to going over the memory of how they had become bond together and how they wish now time would end so they could get out of it. But the trailing duet has him saying "It was long ago and far away and so much better than it is today" and her saying "It felt so good, it felt so right, glowing like the metal on the edge of a knife". I think he's fixated on regret, but her love for him is still there in spite of the fights they have. This song is genius in concept, writing, and execution. But it means more in its cultural reference, which are lost on many today, lost on those who did not live through those times. Too bad. It means a lot gets missed. However, the performance remains interesting and the switchups riveting. It's a time capsule but it is still very entertaining.

Meatloaf ‘Paradis’…The most played song in the bars at Ohio University back in 1991-1994! Then I got to see him sing the National Anthem at Jacobs Field when the Indians played the Yanks. Frigg’n incredible? By far the best I’ve ever heard it done. RIP SIR. 😢

I've read that Todd thought it was a parody of Bruce Springsteen and produced it like one.

This was from the late 70s...I was in high school when this came out.
I was in college in the early 90s and when this came on at a party, everyone would be signing it at the top of their lungs, dancing around. Some songs hold the test if time. Even these young men seem to like it, over 40 years later. I would like them to do 2 out of 3 Ain’t Bad as well.
I was lucky enough to meet him. The summer of 79 at age 12, I visited my sister in NYC. She was a waitress at Barrymore's, a restaurant/bar in the Theater District. I sat at the bar during her shift. Sometimes she sent me off to Broadway shows with some of her theater friends or let me walk to a movie. One day, Meatloaf sat right next to me. We had a nice chat while I drank cokes and ate olives from the garnish set-up. He was super sweet. I'll never forget that.
Back in the day, when you were driving and the DJ announced after the commercial break, they would be back with Meatloaf but didn't say which song it would be, it didn't matter - you didn't switch to another station because you knew whatever song it was, it was going to be incredible. He just had an off the charts level of energy, much the way Queen did. Some people do more than sing, they own the stage the moment they step on it, and he did, without fail.

yes, my brother… Older brother… Had this album when I was first getting old enough to listen to rock and enjoying pop/rock. This is one of my favorite songs when I “stole “his album to keep in my room L O L. Yes, that was the days of record players ha ha great song, great voice, and the girl was just I think they’re for that song only.

So much American culture packed into this song that today's listeners miss.
The song was written following a discussion between Jim Steinman (who wrote most of Meat Loaf's songs) and Meat Loaf about the night Meat Loaf lost his virginity parking near a lake. Steinman took off from there, changing the story a bit to make it more interesting.
The song was released in 1977, so 'present day' in the song is 1977 and starts out as telling a memory of when this middle-aged couple in 1977 were 17yrs old in 1960. The music is written in the style of 1960 rock and roll, to help put you right into the experience.
In that time, teens went parking in a car the boy had usually bought secondhand and fixed up or had borrowed for the night from the family. While the couple made out, they often left the radio on and the dashboard provided a dim light inside the car. The poetry of the song title refers to the nakedness of the girl revealed in that wash of dim light from the dashboard, and for the teenaged boy seeing her unclothed and available was definitely 'Paradise', or promised to be.
Things get hot and heavy. The radio is playing a baseball game, which they likely have on low volume.
The cleverness of the song is matching the action to the way sexual activity was referenced at the time: 1st base, 2nd, 3rd, and home. But also, another cultural convention of the time, was how boys and men used baseball statistics or visualizations of game play to distract themselves, to prolong their ability to maintain an erection.
The young couple gets almost to 'home base' when the girl stops him and demands commitment. And he responds in a sweet ballad musical format, to let him 'sleep on it'; he means 'let me do the deed, then we'll talk later'. He's worked up and needs relief! This is the night, the event, that let's him finally experience sex for the first time!
But here's another cultural convention: for the boy, sex was expected and celebrated; for the girl, it can ruin her life.
This is 12 years before legal and safe abortion, a time before the invention of the birth control pill, a time where many states would not sell birth control to unmarried persons, and never to teenagers. This was a time when girls getting pregnant could be kicked out, when single women had a hard time finding employment, when single women with children could legally be refused rental apartments by landlords. And even if a girl didn't end up pregnant, she did get a 'reputation' and would have trouble getting a boyfriend and later a husband. There's very little up side to letting the boy have his way.
It wasn't a matter of being conniving or demanding, just realistic.
So she wants a guarantee, he wants sexual relief, and he finally promises to marry her. And to his credit, he follows through.
The song then returns to 'present day' (1977) with this 34yr old couple in the middle of an argument. The argument had led to going over the memory of how they had become bond together and how they wish now time would end so they could get out of it. But the trailing duet has him saying "It was long ago and far away and so much better than it is today" and her saying "It felt so good, it felt so right, glowing like the metal on the edge of a knife". I think he's fixated on regret, but her love for him is still there in spite of the fights they have.
This song is genius in concept, writing, and execution. But it means more in its cultural reference, which are lost on many today, lost on those who did not live through those times. Too bad. It means a lot gets missed. However, the performance remains interesting and the switchups riveting. It's a time capsule but it is still very entertaining.

The All-Star game (MLB) in 94 was sung by Meat. Indescribable!! Worth seeing clip for the music, also the times/era. All the players standing as he sang, their caps over their hearts and meaning it.

Meatloaf was a huge baseball fan, even coaching a youth team. The play by play was done by the great Yankee announcer (and shortstop) Phil "Scooter" Rizzuto.
Phil didn’t realize at the time what exactly his play by play was gonna be used for. Rumor has it he was quite angry.
