The world is changing rapidly, and many are fearing that the time of freedom and liberties is behind us. Is this really true, and can you do something to improve your odds?
The world has gone through insane changes in the past couple of years, and many things that we took for granted became unavailable to us! Like freedom of movement and travel!
This really made me eager to think about diversification, and having both plans B and C.
As an EU citizen (passport holder) or a resident one could move freely all over the continent with more ease than people who are not EU citizens. Everyone else simply couldn't come as they pleased, and many nationalities are still restricted from coming to Europe.
This happened all over the globe! If you're just a tourist you're not welcome, if you have some sort of a residency you're free to come in.
If you have multiple options you're in a better position to deal with uncertainty. Having multiple passports and residencies is a great way to go because even when times are unstable you will still be able to move around and structure your life the way you want, as opposed to the way you must.
EU passport is a pot of gold! As you probably know with this passport you can live in any other EU country. You can move countries as you please! If something goes wrong in one of them, you can just leave. This brings lots of options to the table.
Who are we and what do we do?
We are Offshore Citizen team. We help people become global: get a second passport, set up a second residency, pay less taxes, do banking abroad, etc.
We have lots of interesting articles on different topics, we have relevant information up to date.

I caution against Italy as an effective option. I got that citizenship, but it took 6.5 years from start to finish including all the processing. Basically 4 years to qualify (I was already an EU citizen) and another 2.5 years of wait time. For those married to Italians, it won't be much quicker, especially if the country of origin is, shall we say, less desirable. Also, don't forget Italy requires a B1 level language test. It's far from impossible, but it is also not a total walk in the park and requires effort. The tax situation in Italy is also very unfavourable, with forced disclosure of overseas assets (real and financial) and an annual tax levied on those. Choose Portugal over Italy on all counts. They have NHR, no tax on crypto, an A2 level language exam and a 5 year path to citizenship with a 6 month processing time. I am currently 2 years into this process. I would advise against the golden visa. It is not a well run program and is full of fees. Almost anyone can obtain a Portuguese D7 visa based on passive income (low requirements) and also qualify for citizenship after 5 years with the same language requirements.

That's a bunch of nonsense. You have a right to live in any EU country, as an EU citizen. There are no conditions associated with this right.

Thank you for mentioning EU Citizenship by Decent. Worked for me (several years ago) and passed this on to my 2 kids soon after they were born. Obviously your mileage will vary but some considerations (depending on specific EU country) include: (1) Paperwork = obtain docs that prove decent, (2) Time to process (i.e., a great exercise in patience), (3) Language requirements, and (4) Military obligations if you’re (say) 26 years old or younger and if military service is still obligatory. Overall an option often overlooked IMHO. Thanks again.

My reading of Portugal's rules on citizenship by marriage were quite similar to Italy's rules the last time I checked. Sweden's rules on citizenship by marriage weren't bad if you wanted to live in Sweden, but took a long time if you were not living in Sweden. Hungary could leave the EU but stay in the Schengen zone, in which case citizens would still have free access to Schengen.
Also, if the EU dissolves, it's still possible that a borderlessness agreement (i.e. Schengen) still remains. It would make absolutely no sense to destroy all the borderlessness in Europe, that would be terrible economically. But of course Malta could still be excluded from this.
