    Hey people it's Kevin Deal. Thank you for all the great feedback on Kat's video. I should do a video about how we met her, and why she is truly that special. She really is an analog junkie and has found ways to improve products and processes for many of our brands. And she loves taking prodcuts apart to see how they tick, just like I do. But she's not as grumpy as I am.
    But it goes deeper than that. Her ability to share knowledge by teaching other Upscale people and her honest desire to advocate for her customers is what makes her stand apart. All my employees are amazing in different ways. I love all of them.
    Kat's future at Upscale Audio is very bright.

    The Rega Planar goes way back before 2000. I had a Rega Planar 3 in 1982 , It was so good it was called the poor man's Lin. ( Lin Sondek, which was the best at the time ). It had a glass platter and a simple o ring belt drive, but it sounded fantastic. Roy Gandy started Rega Planar in England and his minimalistic Philosophy was born in the R.P3.

    Thanks Kat! With COVID limiting the ability to go to audio shows and come in to showrooms, I would love to see you do some "comparison" videos. Not to determine which is best, but to discuss differences...Turntable X will give you tight and responsive bass and works great with cartridges A and B, turntable Y has exceptional timing and works best with cartridges C and D. For example, what would I get with spending a little more for a Dr. Feikert Trio or Woodpecker versus the Rega P10?

    Well, Rega was one of the few companies that, independent of the introduction of digital technology, never stopped producing turntables and although their mass product was the Planar 3, they already had a product for the P10 niche, which was the P9 launched in 1995 and which was class A at Stereophile. Roy Gandy was not looking for a more expensive market, but he was looking to push his concept of zero mass, infinite stiffness to the limit, and the Naiad was born as a concept, not as a product. But he received requests from several interested parties, so after a while, they decided to produce a limited number. The result of the development of the Naiad concept benefited the entire Rega production, the most direct, in terms of price niche, being the Planar 8 and the Planar 10. And recently the Naia, which is located between the Naiad and the P10.

    I walked past a P10 at an audio show. When the guy wasn't looking, I hooked two fingers through that cutout and whipped that sucker up in the air. There was a big freaky RI-I-i-P! noise when the stylus scrsped across the record, but i couldn't get the height I wanted because some of the cables stayed connected. The table crashed to the cement floor with a hortible feedbacky bang. People were mad because there was a pie-wedge chip taken out of the ceramic platter, and the tonearm was turned around 180 degrees. But I just laughed.

    • @piedpiperprod

      "should"? I can't think of any serious modern table that has even three.

    • @jameskindstedt3769
      @jameskindstedt3769 2 года назад

      @@piedpiperprod So the Audio-Technica AT-LP120XUSB-BK, Pro-Ject X2, & Technics SL-1500C are not serious? I can not find a belt driven turntable with more than two speeds, but direct drive ones may have 78. Not trying to get in an argument with you, but do you know what the fourth speed is?

    • @piedpiperprod
      @piedpiperprod 2 года назад +1

      @@jameskindstedt3769 No, I don't know what the fourth speed is, and the fact that I haven't even heard of it is telling considering I've been a serious audiophile for decades, and I'm not exactly a youngster at 61. And my point wasn't that there were any serious tables that have 3 speeds, but that I couldn't think of any. In other words, outside of older tables, even three speeds are relatively rare. And yes, those tables you mentioned are actually well below what I was pointing at with the word "serious". Point being that to say that any table at any price "should" have all four (?) is strange. You might prefer that they did, but you would be in the minority even with that, let alone a requirement to justify their price. My first response summed it up in questioning the use of the word "should". That is all.

    • @jameskindstedt3769
      @jameskindstedt3769 2 года назад +1

      @@piedpiperprod Thanks for you candid response. The tables I named where to get a better perspective on what you consider serious. As I was growing up in the eighties I only knew of 33,45, and 78. Between dad’s & mom’s collections all three speeds were present and played. I did not find out about the fourth speed until I was helping my parents clean out my grandma’s apartment. She had two record players but one was beyond repair and the other was a Sylvania with the fourth speed 16. Since I had inherited her record collection and part of my other grandfather’s, I needed something to play them on. Thus dad and I got the Sylvania it working order and I have two small speakers that go with the player. I don't play the records enough to justify buying a sound system. Elvis Aloha from Hawaii via Satellite is apparently one of the 16 rpm records. Dad told me that the 16 was use in the language lab, and you could go into a sound booth and make a recording to send to some one. Dad graduated from high school in the 60’s. I am of the opinion that if a cheep record player can find a way to get all four speeds, certainly a highly engendered table should have no problem making all four speeds available. At the very least the 16 would be a conversation starter. Have a wonderful day.

    • @piedpiperprod
      @piedpiperprod 2 года назад

      @@jameskindstedt3769 Now that you mention it, I do remember about the 16 rpm speed. Even 78 rpm requires a completely different cartridge and consequent arm set up, so it is impractical to set up a single table for more that 33 and 45. Most aficionados of 78s use a separate table for only 78s.

    Kat, that was fantastic. The detail you went into was excellent and extremely well said. Hope to see you talk about other gear, because you obviously know your sh*t! Well done, Kat. Thank you 🙂🔊✨🎶

    What's the best non-felt mat for the P10?

      I've tried a number of mats on an RP10. To my ears the Ring Mat Gold spot sounds the most balanced, followed by the Herbie's grungebuster.
