just an addendum to skidded paralell turns: you go up to "unload" the skis, which actually enables you to shift to the uphill ski edge. then, "bend down" again while increasing the pressure on the uphill ski edge, which leads to a nice carving turn, making the former uphill ski your new downhill ski. as a sidenote tho, dont do this while being fully perpendicular to the slope, you always want to point the tips downhill a bit. it does work perpendicular too, but it's not easy to control if you're not experienced with carving, gotta have a good balance. also, don't lean into the swing. all of this is the reason for pole planting, btw. it just FORCES you to unload. plant pole, unload, shift edge, load again. ps: skiing for almost 30 years, still watching this. great guide!

just went skiing for the first time and had a traumatic time...the instructor didn't have very good English to teach me and I nearly killed myself because I couldn't stop or turn...pretty much cried the whole day and fell numerous times which scared me because my leg would twist in unnatural ways! the feeling of losing control of my speed on a crowded steep slope and unable to stop felt similar to driving a car on a busy road with no brakes! horrifying! I still want to try again because everyone seems to love it once they master it and I want to feel that way too, lol

oh i remember my first time 12 years ago, i was a young kid and i was stubborn, i went on the black diamond for the first time without instructions. Humble brag but i pick up on this pretty easily, not that time. I fell probably 50 times until i got down, tried again the next day it was easier and so on, then tried a green run and it was easy as fuck didn't want to go, and i realized that i needed training, so next two years i was in a skii school starting every november of course, and it took some time to master the upside V stop format and then the double II on the side with the skies, it's best to go to the native country (Where you're from) and learn from another foreign country. It's going to be hard but hey, it's the greatest sport of all time.

I can’t thank you enough for this video! My boyfriend invited me on a ski trip this weekend and I told him it was my first time! Knowing he would have complete confidence in my ability to “wing it” I figured I should watch a video to at least get the basics and boy am I glad I did! We got to the mountain and the only pointers that I got from him were, “if you wanna stop, do pizza…” I have never skiied in my life so I’m guessing he assumed I knew what that was! Then he proceeded to tell me we were going down a green, which in itself was scary bc why wouldn’t he start me on the bunny slopes, huh? Who knows. Anyway, I fell a couple times and was a little scared bc it was my first time (like I said before). Anyway fast forward 6 hours, we go down that first green again and I am once again traumatized a bit, which I found weird bc I did that one first….. only to find out it was a BLUE. He took me down a blue the first time with no instructions so I cannot thank you enough for this 17 minute video, because frankly without it, I would’ve died- or if I managed to get down the mountain in one piece, I would’ve murdered my boyfriend. Anyways, thanks so much for this video! It was truly a lifesaver! Cheers!!!

One procedure gave me some trouble, however, and even with practice back at the house, I found it very difficult. It was getting back up when I fell. I’m actually pretty flexible, and even strong. But, the stiffness of the boots prevented me from getting far enough over my feet to move forward and ultimately back up. We’re returning to Utah again next year and maybe I’ll figure it out by then. 😋

i watched this 10 times so i will not forget any of it while i am on spot. I will tell you guys how its gonna go next week...but this is a really great introduction.
on the other hand: you could have been a great teacher. you make it sound so relaxing and the way you build up the explanation is also entertaining. I am saying this as a professional. I constantly train people and hold presentations in my line of work. allow me to give you one small advice. You should take averagely 1 second pauses between sentences and avg. 3 second pauses between paragraphs. This will help attendants absorb and process information 5x faster.
bottom line...thumbs up... i would give you 100 likes if i could. THANKS MAN! :)

thank you so much for sharing this video. I cannot tell you how much your tips have helped me to go from wedge turns to parallel turns in short order. The last part of your video where you say "this up and down movement is crucial...", yes indeed, that was what finally brought it all together for me. It's that movement that releases the pressure of the controlling ski edge and allows me to turn. On my 4th trip (ever) to the slopes I was able to short turn down black diamond slopes while keeping fairly good balance. It's not pretty but I can go down the slopes with high confidence that i'm not going to tumble or run into other skiers.

Getting up was easy but tiring after a while. I learned that you could sweat in negative celsius while skiing.

Went skiing for the first time yesterday on Mt Hermon and i managed to do the hard (red) course easily thanks to you!
I started with the medium (blue) track amd long skis and fell a few times.
After 4 rounds I switched to snow blades (sorry skis) and wow it was so easy to control!
Didn't manage to do the plowing technique (called pizza here) but parallel slaloms and drifting were a breeze!
Went to the top after a few successful runs on the medium.
It was a perfect snow(powdery) clear sky hot day (4-10 C) i was a bit over dressed though.
    Thank you!

This really helps out my tip is to start with plowing on easy slopes and Then try to bring the skis together like he Said in Every turn and then try to go faster. I even had a knee injury at this time so it was hard to get up if I fell but just keep practicing and you will get it! I saw your recent video on learning to ski, but this video is by far the best. The way you describes things is much easier to follow, the hip movement, bow tie, they are good but not as effective as learning from this. Also, I learned more from this video than from a ski instructor I had.

I went skiing for the first time in my life yesterday and we got a dope instructor, he thought how to fall properly(sit down on your skis and slowly lay down) how to stand up, whitch was simmilar to what you showed but without the sticks, you had to sit on you skiis first and then use your knees and boots to stand up whitch required 0 effort, then he thought how to snow plow and once I got it down, we had learned everything in 1 hour, over the next 2 hours I fell only 1 time because I was heading into the ski lift whitch was on the same level and didn't know how to turn at that point. Later I learned it and it was the most fun I've had in my life even tried doing some jumps and fancier turns whitch nearly got me hitting the ground but survived :) all around good experiences for skiing.

From a standpoint of a ski coach I have to say that was a pretty okay demonstration with a few exceptions.
For example it's really easy to figure out turns on carving skis because they will practically do all the work for you. It's all about the way you transfer your weight from ski to ski. You don't have to do anything with the skis manually because once you transfer your body weight from ski to ski, they'll do that for you automatically. From then it's really easy.
One more thing I noticed - your body weight is not just going from one ski to the other in the turns but also you are pushing on the front of your ski boots, on your shins essentially. That's also gonna make the movement easier and give you more stability in the turns. Same thing applies when doing the snow plough.
To put that into perspective, when you are squatting, your knees should be in line with your toes and you just push your butt down and your back is straight,. You don't do that on the skis, you have to push your shins forward so your body will go lower and no straight back and pushed out butt. It's almost like an opposite movement to squats.

Hey brother! I truly want to thank you for this video. I live in Switzerland for 10 years and yesterday was the third time I went to skiing. Yeah, it's an absurd, I know.
So, I already learned to turn with the V position, but I needed more practice and confidence. So I went to the beginners side of the ski track, those where 3 years old children go back and forth with a slider.
But my goal was to do your 9th lesson, the parallel turn. So, there I was, at the kids track, trying to get the flow. You are so right about having to go down and up at the turn. That makes the whole difference! So after a few trials and tried the big track.
Guess what? I did it! Parallel turn all the way down. I have also tried to do as fast as possible, making many turns. A finally very long turns.
I just wanted to thank you for the video, because it gave me the nicest moment so far at the mountains. I can't wait to have some more.
Ps: I did hurt myself a couple of times, and I think my right arm got out of the place and went back, so it hurts a lot! Still, I will get better and go up as soon as possible!
