When i was a lad we attended the Gaelic School up in Timmins, Ontario. All our instructors were amazing, Seumas and Burgess no less. Innumerable memories, but as snapshots: Once John recommended, "Alec, could you hold that note just a puuubic-hair's length longgar?" And Seumas disapprovingly, "Youd be a gooot piper, if youd just get off the damn skaterboard!" The vid above recalled their recitals: the impossibly light touch on the chanter, the effortless breathing, just as we were admonished to aspire to in our old blue College of Piping Tutor Book I. And those recitals: Burgess hamming it up, switching hands on the hornpipes and using his elbow on the double high A's. Flawlessly. Alex Duthart's one-handed 5-stroke rolls with both hands. We left gobsmacked. It was among our first close encounters with unrivalled mastery. I never looked at the world as complacently again. And, im sorry; but how could the Queen not knight her piper John D., MBE for his contributions? But hey, given Burgess, maybe he told her to piss off!
My late father was a John D Burgess fan. We had lps etc. I loved it. John D for me played beautiful a tune called Mrs Mcpherson of Inveran ive never heard as nice.

From memory, Dad was less than chuffed being up on that roof (not his exact words lol)... but the banter was, as always, fantastic
Thats why John was going quicker to get down of it lol.
Thank you so much for posting all of these videos Rory, I hope there are more to come.
Hi, no more videos but I have some radio recordings from 1970s - just posted the 1st one
Burgess is so relaxed he makes playing look effortless and like he is just pushing buttons with no resistance.
