If you see bumble bees treat them with respect and don't kill them. Bumble bee nest can be anywhere from where these where to hay bails to bird houses.

Had one under a concrete and brick porch and it took me a week of

Kill aggressive honey bees (ie, "Africanized Killer Bees..." I hear they're physically indistinguishable to the calmer honey bees(?))
But let bumblebes and the more docile honey bees do their thing?
It just seems like bumblebees are decidedly pretty aggressive and comparable to the more-aggressive Africanized honey bees...
Do bumblebees attack other colonies of honey bees? Will they sting you when you walk by and accidentally brush flowers near the sidewalk with your leg?
(oh, and no judgment or insinuation about anything, jic anyone supposes I'm saying something I'm not or thinks there is some kind of inflection on my text)

    • @WarpedPerception
      @WarpedPerception Год назад +3

@@luceatlux7087 Good point, but no way bumble bees are nowhere near as aggressive as Africanized bees, bumble bees are very docile unless you hit their nest with a shovel or something, but even then they will probably only chase you for 20 or 30 ft, Africanized bees will chase you for a miles, all of them and gang up on you and sting you to death... That's their mechanism of action.

Bubble bees are typically less aggressive to the average person but they don’t function the same way as the honeybees he’s used to. Bumblebees are better for the environment, plus there’s less to deal with in a hive by a lot they’re less “busy bee” and calmer here people just like honey bees for the honey

For your first attempt at rehoming Bumble Bees you have done an awesome job! I have handled Bumble Bees since I was a child. I have some vids of me holding lots of Bumble Bees. I breed quite a few different species. The only time I have been stung is when I was removing some wax moth grubs that where destroying the a nest. Next time you move a bumble bee nest try when it is just getting dark at night. They do not fly when its dark. They only like to fly when they can see light. You can use a very dim red light. It has to be red. Also make sure you have a thick scent of honey wafting around. This will disguise your scent and help keep the bees calm. You can use a hive tool to gently prize the nest up if it is stuck.. Make sure you do not cause any vibrations. Bumble Bees and Honey Bees do not like vibrations. Obviously you know about protective clothing haha yes they can sting multiple times. Queens sting is much more powerful. Its best to put the whole nest in the box you want to keep them in straight away. Place them in the box. block the entrance hole. Just check around for any Bees left around, Once all the bees are in put the lid and bobs your uncle. Let the Bees sit in the new location for about 2-3 hours before opening the entrance hole. This will give them time to adjust. When you open the entrance hole just stand about 10 ft away and you will see them come out and fly backwards. This is called a maiden flight. The Bees are now making a mental map of their new location. Hope this info helps you or any one wishing to move Bumbles

In case you get asked to collect another nest, the best time is at night - when they're all in. Use a head torch with a red-light, which doesn't disturb them much. Use gloves to lift the whole nest + bees into your box, having blocked the entrance. Put the lid on and place the box where you want them and leave overnight with the entrance closed. Open next morning.

Its great that he took the time and suffered through the pain to help these bumble bees, but maybe waiting til after dark to deal with them would have been best for all parties involved. I've literally never had to relocate a bee or wasp/hornet hive, mainly because I rarely need to. They usually don't bother you unless you really do something harmful to them.
However, it was strange that he said he has moved honey bee hives before, but didn't seem to know to wait until after dark to mess with them. Unless you don't mind causing half the bee hive's population to be separated and lost, and the homeowner doesn't mind having dozens of frustrated bees flying around that area for the next day or two, you would be better off waiting til after dark to gather them into a new container and relocate them.

Dude THANK YOU for taking the time to get these Bumble Bees into a box and transplant them to a place where they would be safe.. Not many beekeepers or live bee removers will do that specifically BECAUSE they don't have a use for them.. Just because they can't get wax, pollen or honey from them as easily as honey bees they just don't care about them but ALL bees are important pollinators. Any bee colony that can be removed live should be given the effort to do so. So again from one bee keeper to another, THANK YOU! Probably should of came back at night to get them though.. All of the foragers and guard bees would of bee in the box.. lol :)

I have Honey bees and I plan to start some Bumble bees in the spring. I recently learned that honey bees can't pollinate certain crops, like Tomatoes. If a person wants "bees" for pollination they might consider a more well rounded approach. Personally I have bees for honey, pollination, and doing some small part for the environment and food chain.

+S0anonymous the way some people start with bumble bees is the go early spring when the queen bumble bees first come back out from the winter and they catch them and put them in a box. • @Rattlerjake1
      @Rattlerjake1 7 лет назад +12

Tomatoes are "self-pollinating" by a breeze or wind. Honey bees only use them to gather pollen. Bumblebees also are better pollinators of blueberries, roses, and azaleas. Honeybees usually prefer non-fragrant flowers like most 'wildflowers', sunflowers, fruit and nut trees/vines.

Hi, I was researching Bumblebees over the last week.
    Found good info at www.bumblebee.org/faq.htm
    Tips I gathered:
1.- Use a red light, at night. They do not react to red light. (ruclips.net/video/KHCQjbP2yzc/видео.html)
2.- Not worth moving a nest near the end of the year. New queens will go underground for the winter. The nest should be empty by october-november. To start a hive you need to catch a new queen (mated at the end of the season the year before) in early march-april before she decides and starts building the nest.
3.- If the thorax gets cold, under 86°F, the bee will almost not move. I held one last week on my hand untill my warmth and the sun heated her up. You can catch bees with a glass jar, put it 3-4 minutes in the fridge, then handle them or transfer more easily.
4.- They poop and put failed pupae on the side of the nest. Therefore it is advisable to build a special compartment in the box for that matter, that can be cleaned, on one side or between the brood and the exit.
    Hope this helps somebody.
    -.-
Some guys in Poland are raising bees for pollination. This is probably the most impressive video: ruclips.net/video/Eeyr8MzRl2I/видео.html

I feel you, man. I was stung on my birthday and thought I was going to die. Still, I think bumble bees are gentle and kind on principle.

The final brood in late summer or fall are males and the next year's queens. The old queen and workers die. After mating, new queens hibernate over winter and start new colonies in the spring. The nest isn't used again, unless by chance. I tried to save a new nest made in debris in my shed. Put it in an unused bird house nearby. The queen stayed, but the nest was soon destroyed by small ants. Hope your attempt was more successful!

It was a good action by you to save pollinators even if they're not honey-producers. Thanks for the video, DFishman76.

The rusty patch bumblebee native to my region can only sting once, then die, due to barbs on the stinger. They are very docile, but will get aggressive to defend themselves. But make no mistake, when they defend and sting you they die. Sweet creatures and one of my favorite of the garden and nature walks.
Thank you for helping them out.

When I was about ten years old, I accidentally ran over a nest of bumblebees with a lawnmower. Within seconds, the air around me was a cloud of bumblebees. I was stung at least 20 times as I ran away. One went up the leg of my cut-off shorts and stung my left nut. It swelled to the size of a tennis ball. When I saw you approached with just shorts on, I knew you were in for it. Congratulations for sticking with it and completing the move.

    You have some incredible patience.
I reckon once they got a second sting in me I'd be abandoning the save the bumbles line in favour of the M80 firecracker approach.

I do 6 or more bumblebee relocation a year, the key to getting stung less is a full bee suit and bee gloves, and a bee vacuum, then you can get the nest move over easier and set up. only hard part is getting them in the new nesting site, for you need to let them all out at the same time. But always be fully suited up.

I wish you were near me. I just found a nest with my lawn mower. They swarmed but did not attack. Been mowing there every week and the other day, they came out. I do not want to kill them. I hope they will not nest there next year.

@@ninaconnolly6077 The new queens will over winter and nest in new spots, just in the spring be sure to fill all the wholes in the yard so they do not have a place to set up.

The Bumblebees where I live in mid atlantic were incredible, almost as docile as a dog or cat, and when I walked outside brown wasps and yellow jackets would be flying around, they would chase the wasps away or bump into them, everyday it was like this. One of the most incredible things I've seen, almost felt like they were consciously protecting me. I don't know if this is typical behavior, I don't know much about bees, but I'd love to learn more about bumblebees because I feel like honey bees get all the limelight.
