    "Elia kazan is a traitor"- Orson Welles on being asked about the impact of Kazan

    • @WestVillageCrank
      @WestVillageCrank 3 года назад +4

      Orson Welles liked hyperbole. And if being a traitor is a synonym for betraying friends, Welles would be also be a traitor, and of epic proportions. The irony? I think both Welles and Kazan were superb artists, creators of magnificent work. And, Welles, in that same clip cited here, also goes on to say that Kazan was a great director.

      @@flmcghee What are my prejudices?
      If you know Welles's history, you know it is a series of wives, friends, and others used and tossed away. The number of people from whom he "borrowed" money (that he never repaid), for example, would probably take more digits - fingers and toes - than a small family could offer. I say this as a profound fan of Welles's work. His gifts were bountiful, his imagination limitless, his ability to acquire skills endless. But I repeat the question,: who personally betrayed him? (Obviously, he was professionally betrayed. But then, alas, betrayal is the Standard Operating Procedure of show biz.)

    "What if I were at the peak of my success and was suddenly asked to give other names of colleagues to the government? And what if I knew that doing so would preserve my career but could only damage those of the colleagues I named? When I think about this I can't be positive that I wouldn't buckle. I'm just not that sure of my courage. But I am sure of one thing. If I did name names, then watch those I named be ruined while I prospered, I never live down the shame.
    And if somebody tried to give me an award for my career contribution, I'd be too embarrassed to accept it."

    All Kristian Harloff knows is roughly 100 films made between Star Wars 1977 and whatever the last Avengers movie was. He's a fanboy not a film buff. All of these types of shows are hosted by the same type of guy -- "STAR WARS! MARVEL!! DC!!! REMAKES! SEQUELS!!!" -- but when it comes to some genuine knowledge of the industry or film history they're utterly useless.

      Thats what the whole of Collider is unfortunately. Having been employed by Collider for about a year. High importance is placed upon writing about all the recycled garbage you mentioned. (Marvel Avengers, DC etc).
      They’re not a genuine publication and its obvious that they arent true cinephiles. Its all about the money $$ as the focus is largely placed on all the highest grossing franchises. In fact, you are actually punished for writing true to your interests.

    I'm not defending Kazan, but Dreyfuss is playing to the gallery here. First of all, let's be clear, Kazan named eight....EIGHT people. Not two hundred and whatever. Secondly, yes the committee already knew SOME of those eight, but Kazan did not name them 'just to be a part of it'...he was following his own principles and was true to his newfound belief that communism was not only corrupted but would corrupt society if it was allowed to continue.
    I would suggest people look up what Kazan himself had to say about all this. People don't crosscheck things enough these days. Have a look at Kazan's side, then judge. Yes people suffered and he lived to regret that, but he suggests that to be dishonest and pretend he knew nothing would've been wrong. I'm just saying, that's all. There's more to this than Dreyfuss and Welles account for.
    Incidentally I'm an anarchist. So before anyone accuses me of being anti-communist for saying that Kazan was ok, just note that I'm dead against the lot of em.

Over 200 people named by Kazan? False. Eight, and those names were already known by the committee. How about someone blaming HUAC for putting people in these positions? They broke down Larriy Parks by hours of questioning until he named people. Did he intend to at the start. No.

People were were being blacklisted for something as simple as having attended a few meetings in their 20's back in the 1930's. I mean, I don't respect some of the folks who stayed in the party after information about Stalin and the purges actually started coming out...but before that I certainly do.
