A commentator on MSNBC said Blanche is not experienced as a criminal defense lawyer in a state court. His claim to fame is as a prosecutor in federal court where most defendants plead guilty and it is just a matter of working out the details. He really has not had to face many juries and judges in this type of proceeding, especially for the defense.

So what exactly the crime is?
The first crime is: falsifying business records. The second crime: criminal election interference in the 2016 election. Did you hear Pecker's testimony, that Trump used the National Enquirer to create fake news about Ted Cruz, Ben Carson and later Hillary Clinton, and to conceal real stories about Trump? That is criminal election interference.
An expert witness typically would be providing some sort of counter argument to forensic/scientific evidence. The only thing I can think of in this case is some sort of "expert" who will challenge some of the narrative, or offer an alternative narrative, around the call logs and timeline or relevance of texts/emails/etc. Or perhaps an "expert" in accounting principles who will claim that what was done with the invoicing/payment and categorization of the charges was "normal business practice".
Only cheap when it suits him. He does not choose to hitch a ride or go by bus because it is cheaper....he flies...all the time. He may not have liked paying more to Cohen but the stakes were high.
