Hey guys! I wanna rock, but with who? How's about i rock with you?! On Weekend Wankshop 194, we are going to be learning about the real way to play ALL the chords in Rock With You by Michael Jackson, one of my favorite pop tunes ever! So many awesome jazzy chords you can learn by mastering this song.
Use the time stamps provided above to navigate through whatever part of the song you're trying to learn. There are a LOT of different guitar lessons on how to play this song out there, and because the harmony of the song is so big, they aren't exactly incorrect... but in this video, i'm showing you guys the closest representation of the original album guitar part. Search for "Rock With You guitar only" here on youtube to find the original isolated track (which is by David Williams or Mario Henderson, depending on who you ask) and compare to the lesson.
Playing my G&L Legacy with Bare Knuckle '63 Veneer Board pickups into my Kemper Profiler.
Thanks for watching! Wanna see more jazzy funky chord-based stuff on my channel? Let me know in the comments!
Thanks for watching this lesson on how to play Rock With You! Micheal Jackson rules! What other funky jazzy rhythm guitar classics do you want to learn next?
Funky Stuff by Kool and the Gang, or Give Me the Night by George Benson
That Lady - The Isley Brothers
How about some Hall and Oats? Would like to see how they use some of these chords.....
Human nature would be sick
The real way to play Under the Bridge or Can't Stop would be epic. Also, not jazzy, but Black or White by Michael Jackson is a great riff that deserves a breakdown!
It's really cool that you include this kind of jazzier/funkier pop stuff and don't just focus on the hard Rock/metal guitar. Much appreciated.
This song absolutely tore me a new one when I had to learn it for a gig. This video would have saved me a lot of hours. thanks Uncle Ben.
Rick Beatto’s tip on the chord voicings is golden, great lesson
this has a Niles Rogers feel... this also really shows your range as a musician. Thank you for posting! :)
"Less clicking, and more picking" Love it! You're right, less viewing and more doing!
Time for my favorite video of the week.
Robert Baker Love seeing the master guitar players of youtube show up in the comments.
Rock the night away!
Agree.
Uncle Ben is da best.
Finally a cover where the first chord is actually correct. Far too many people with damaged ears on youtube thinking it's Gbmaj7
Uncle Ben gets you right for EVERYTHING....not just metal 😎😎😎
Thanks for this! A lot of other tutorials failed to pick up on the "Bb11" and just called it an Ab (I express these chords as Ab/Bb or C#/B because to me that's the easiest way to think of them). I appreciate your commitment to finding the right voicings, and as far as I can tell, you're spot on across the board! These old funk/pop/R&B tunes are great for learning those different voicings and inversions, and learning how to play within the rest of the band with significant orchestration. Right on, great job, and thanks again.
Last wankshop: Tool. And now funky Michael Jackson.
Thanks bro!!
I might be a metalhead but I studied Niles Rodgers 🤘😉👍
@18:06 The Fixx - One Thing Leads To Another
Classic!! Knew it as soon as you played the chords!
Jason Vegan haha you got it!!
I'm a bit stubborn regarding thin picks... I think a person can still funk even having a THICC pick. But I do understand what you mean Ben! Thank you for the wonderful lesson, will be rocking it thru the weekend!
It's "thick", not THICC. . We're not talking about women who stuff their faces and are obese.
Can't thank you enough Ben, I have a tryout with a band in a couple of days, this song is on their set list and you have saved me considerable time, particularly with those chord voicings.
Instant sub, like etc
Really glad I got my Fixx there in the Bridge! It's like my Stepmom Becky says everytime she sees you: One Thing Leads to Another.
Wil Conine MY MAN!!!!!
Ben Eller Super underrated band BTW, you should hit up some of Jamie's riffs. Nastier than Becky after 4 jager-bombs... you know what I'm talkin bout! AnyMeow... they always seemed to get second billing to other big 80's groups (Th Law offices of Duran Duran and Duran) Love ya bruh! Keep em coming, and thanks.
Teaching in sections, makes it so easy learn, and that's what make you very unique to follow... Awesome! Awesome! Awesome!
The Best tutorial for Rock With You I have ever seen. It helps a LOT!! I LOVE this song very much and I was always frustrated that couldn't play in the right way. Thank you!
Ben you have no idea how much I appreciated this lesson bro. Thanks so much for this
A great catalog of very commonly used funk chord voicings with the sage advice of Uncle Ben. Excellent video as always, Ben! You're awesome man!
I haven't experimented with those voicings yet, maybe a few, but I'll come back and learn those new ones.
You are so thorough in your tutorials people should have to pay to watch you you are the standard the poster child of a guitar player you're awesome I can't even say it enough and I'm a seasoned vet on guitar., but you my friend.. got it going on! Damn
Awesome lesson! I certainly would love to see more like this!
This is perfect. I've been looking for a lesson on something funky to get my rhythm playing in better shapes. Thanks Uncle Ben.
Thanks for rockin' the G&L! That thing is dope.
Love the way you teach this, including the recommendations for type of guitar, pickup and compressor comments. Thanks!
Challenging tune! Thanks for breaking it down. It'll take me awhile, I'm sure, to get it. But sounds worth it! Peace!
Love when you branch out into other forms of music. Maybe you'll tackle some classical playing on nylon strings one of these days.
You are the best!!!. I have watch several youtubers, and they all play this song different.
Great choice and fine words of advice for those players not familiar with this genre 👌
Would love to see you tackle "Controversy" by Prince. Some sick funk on that one!
Peeled Apples oooooh good one!!!
Really appreciate your guitar lessons (and the humor!) You're a great teacher and you deserve more subs (currently you're at 442K).
Very neat lesson! I love this MJ classic! And it is SOOO much fun to get that strumming hand working. So much fun to play this one :)
Congrats on your subs. Your doing great and days are Bright.😎
✌🏻🎸🤘🏻🇺🇸
J Burrough thank you so much!
This is the closest to the song compared to other interpretations I've seen. Thankyou 🙌🏿
THANK you so much! It really helped me a lot. It´s very nice with those sidenotes with a bit of explanation. Keep up the good work! ;))
All right a shout out to Rick Beato, great lesson Ben
which lesson is that, hes got a ton.
Just wanna say you are awesome man. Single handedly got me into jazzier chords
Pretty tremendous lesson Uncle Ben, enjoyed this one a lot, thank you.
Thanks man! Playing this for a gig later this month, you helped a lot!!
that Db M/F is the Famous Jimi Hendrix Chord Shape! thought id mention it, this tutorial is fantastic btw you got my sub.
Hell yeah! More awesome rhythm guitar!
Thank you, i uses this as a kind of way to check if the chords i got from listening were truly what was
played. Thanks a lot for the lil talk at the end, it gave me a better perspective on these type of Wildly orchestrated songs!
God bless you man lmaooo
I can't thank you enough for this video, Uncle Ben :O
Very well done Ben ....sounds very very close to the album thanks man
Some fancy strummin Uncle B
15:30 I always go with the most convenient way because I don’t want to do some crazy chord where I have to move my fingers a lot just to get the perfect sound, instead I would move my fingers just a bit to get a pretty close sound. You know? Anyways great vid healed me alot
You must have put in a lot of time on this.. Really good tutorial. Thanks for sharing your skills.
Wonderful to see David Williams lessons like this and so accurate! great stuff! :) Be nice to see more on David mayby the cool riffs he did on Bryan Ferry tracks like, 'Kiss and tell' and 'I put a spell on you'
Thanks for the great video and for really figuring out the right voicings for these chords! For the Cb/Db, on the isolated track it sounds like it may be voiced as 9th fret E string, 11th fret A string, 9th fret D string, 11th fret G string. It sounds like more of a sus chord on the guitar actually than a major chord. What do you think?
Great lesson, Ben! I always struggle with that funk strumming and this will be a good exercise. But what I've recently learnt, is, that especially this funk strumming is often a victim of the sound. If it's too harsh and/or the pick is too thick, it just won't sound AND FEEL right. Do you use much compressor here? Also an important aspect, I think.
Now I have an earworm (not that bad). ;) Thanks, man!
Brain Twister there’s a little compression on here, yeah! Not much.
damn I didn't know that Chris Pontius played guitar... great video man!
Do more rithm related stuff, this was great
Thank you for the lesson i really like this song
Nailed it Uncle Ben! Thank you!
Awesome lesson Ben, very very helpful! One thing tho! The last chord in Bridge 1 sounds more like a Plain Jane Ab to me...my wife thinks so too and she's always right...
Killer video, I recommend Can't Wait by CHON. Some sweet fingerpicking, a killer arpeggiated section and very, very snazzy
You the man Ben!
That finger shuffle from the Ab/Bb to Bb caused me problems when concentrating on singing backing vocals while playing this... so I actually play both chords with my thumb handling the bass note on the sixth string. Then it's a brain-free thumb-anchored slide in the left hand while locking eyes on the lead vocalist and ears on matching vocal timing and pitch. Takes a while to get your thumb used to the stretch, but it's a really helpful technique.
Excellent tutorial Bravo!!!! 👏👏👏👏
One helluva lesson homie!
thanks man!
Uncle Ben, will you do a lesson on trilogy suite op.5 by yngwie malsmteen? there's so many fake news when it comes to teaching how to play most of the song!
Awesome tutorial, really enjoy playing this riff :)
Great explanation . Thank you.
dam i didn’t know you had any funk in you! well played!!!
you right on with Bro.....
Killer rhythm guitar. Great practice regiment.
Great tutorial. Thank you!
Thank you uncle Ben Lol ✊🏾🤟🏾
You should do some Primus lessons. LaLonde is always doing some weird shit on guitar.
Awesome video thanks
Give it to me baby - Rick James
Thats my suggestion
Metallica one week MJ the next, always a blast to Rock With You. Thanks Ben!
Sorry to veer off topic here... I was watching an old vid of yours, and you had mentioned you were starting a "meet the machines" series. Whatever happened there, because both my wife and I admire your collection, and it'd be cool to hear the tales.
EvilDeeDlivE absolutely! Dude I’ve been busy as hell but haven’t forgotten!
Your fricken cool man... LOve your channel bro.
PS and that guitar finish is wicked!J.C!😇
Thank you 😊
Yo Ben! you should do Celebration by Kool and the Gang
Great video, thank you for sharing your good work! I would just say that the Eb-9 you're actually playing doesn't have any third so it would be called "suspended" (without the 4 / 11). Wouldn't really matter since the function of that chord in the song is minor... But in the bridge, that function changes for a dominant 9. In other terms, it's not an Eb-9 but an Eb9.
Great song analysis Ben....
How bout steely dan.... Kid Charlemagne ...the lesson you made for Peg was 100%
Mark Baum how about Josie?
@@BenEller ...thanks that's a great tune as well.....
Shake it shake it... shake it like a Polaroid picture
Bravo et merci !
I would say a better pickup toggle position would be on the 2 or 4 coil tap positions on a strat
Love Rears Its Ugly Head - Living Colour has my vote for next funky tune.
heck yes please!
thanks dude!
You should reference a back issue of BASS PLAYER MAGAZINE, it features the actual studio bass player AND the correct chord progression.
Love in inversions on chords on the turnaround you barely move past those four frets.
Thanks Brahman!
Ben, your the shit!.. what band are u in? I need to follow... where u from
Hey Ben, as a life long bass player what would you say would be the best thing for one who wants to learn to play guitar but just has difficulty getting used to the much closer string spacing and being able to form the chord shapes. Also what type of exercises would best help to develop that ability?
gregg4164 get tom petty greatest hits and learn every song. Same with CCR.
Hi boss ben..good day to you sir..GOD bless.i want to learn. The song 'REMINISCING by little river band..the rythm and the lead..thanks boss ben...youre so handsome haha..take care
i rememeber when u had 4k subscribers
my favorite MJ tune! Off of the Wall was my favorite album! You should find out how to play Rock your body by justin timberlake bc i thought i had figured out the bridge a few years back and now i cant figure it out!
Its not the weekend tho
Well it’s Saturday here on the east coast.
Kickass!
One Thing Leads to Another by The Fixx!
Spencer Maxfield a winner is you!!!!
They also took all the low out of the guitars in the EQing as well. So everything was in the higher sounding on the record.
I feel like i will learn a lot. Lets dive in
nice work....
cool
'Putting out a match' ;-)
Hi thanks for your transcribing but I have a question I hear the key to be in Eb dorian or in other words Bb minor as all the notes sung revolve around that tonal centre. What do you hear?
