The Korean people will be one again. No matter what the costs, no matter what the consequences, we have to be one again. It's just in our nature to be united. Over sixty years and a contrast in ideologies have separated us, but we still share our fundamental links. Arirang is one of these, formed through a thousand-year-long unification.
If only the initial project for the Korean people's Republic was put in place, but sadly, the USSR and the USA decided to occupy and divide it up, creating two dictatorships, a bloody war, and constant tension. Yes, I know south Korea is not a dictatorship anymore, but it was conceived as an anti-communist totalitarian dictatorship, with no true difference between north and south
It'a amazing how a memory from way, way back can make you cry in the present, be it something sad or some situation that you wish could be repeated but will never be again.
North Korea & South Korea may technically have their own separate national anthems…but this is truly the cultural anthem that unites the two Koreas. Should the two Koreas reunite one day, I can’t imagine a more appropriate national anthem than Arirang.
I'm a brain lesion disabled person who injured his brain in a car accident. Then, the Jeonbuk Women's Disabled Choir sang Arirang. A foreign orchestra? Thanks to Arirang, I'm so proud of being Korean.Proud? I'm so happy to have that.♡ I love you all so much.😘😘😘😘😘😘😘
Still watching this.. Last few days there still a meeting between President Moon and Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un on Pyongyang. Lets hope and pray for the unification so that, separation between Korean people will finally over.. Would this be the unified Korea national anthem?
It's already being used as the anthem for unified Korean teams in sporting events. It was played when the unified Korean team won gold in dragon boat racing in Asian Games 2018.
At point 3:30 a beautiful sad almost tragic theme is started I suspect in minor key and is my favorite part (brings me to tears). I do not ever here this part in any other version of Arirang on Utube. Is this something unique to this version of Arirang? Who composed and arranged this version of Arirang? They deserve credit for a wonderful piece of music
Although I chiefly believe the NYP was invited to play out of a facade of placation and peace, it is still beautiful and transcends the ironic use of politics to stub the nations.
ChiISeongGeom, I can't agree with you more. China and US obviously do not like it, but the two countries should work hard again to reach the goal of reunification and ultimately removing the boundary separating the people in the Korean Peninsula.
@lchaney214 - Reunification? What would that look like? I know it sounds good but it’s a much bigger job than most people are aware of. Even if you could agree on a political and financial process, the social or cultural shock for both parties would be tremendous. N. Koreans have been told what to do and think for too long, while S. Koreans have been running in the opposite direction.
@aznzeratul do u really think it would boost the korean economy? i think it would become median between north and souths current economies because south would have to invest so much money in bringing the north up to date
well back then, west germany's gdp was way higher compared to south korea right now... i read something about it and the difference back then between wgermany and egermany was 3:1? but if you compare skorea and nkorea, i believe its a greater gap/ratio. volleyr has a point and the reconstruction of the whole nkorea would be coming out of skorea taxes and will take much longer compared to the unification of germany. but AFTER... it will be a different story since theres so many resources in nk
The South. The North ruling would probably put the entire peninsula into poverty, and it's human rights record would be abysmal. I would have a re-unified Korea as a federal state, owing to the massive differences between North and South, with each province, special city, metropolitan city, etc., being sovereign in their territory along with the federal government being sovereign all over the country.
+Alex Jenkins you have a point there my friend. Although I have 1 opinion regarding the Korean War. If the north won the war, they would not be living in poverty. The north could have modernized by now.
Gary Guyton actually, Vietnam is under this period called the Doi Moi (search it up) . It is basically like the miracle on the han river for south korea
@kindly4real right. im ethnic south korean and id love to see it happen but i dont think it ever will. north is so backward and no iformation is even aloud in the country (no internet or cell fones) most north koreans dont even know that man has landed on the moon yet! and aside from all those obstacles, we cant even keep the north from attacking our ships at the moment. we need to think about these things before reunification is even mentioned unfortunatly
as a South Korean I know but if you see where the government is going, they are going nowhere close in attempting to unify the divided land because they only look at the problems to be encountered right away rather than viewing the long effect. I too want unification, but i am saying that there is a drawback to it at first point. Also, consider that China and Japan don't want unification since it will boast Korean economy... Sadly we are surrounded by enemies
to anyone who believes north and south reunification should not be done due to high economic costs: it must be done for the sake of korean people's soul. koreans are one people.
I know that I'm replying to a comment posted 11 years ago, but I wanted to add that a cultural as well as economic gulf had been developing between Korea DPR and Rep. of Korea. For the reunification to be complete, said gulf must be overcome.
So then what, just keep things the way they are, keep families separated, keep north koreans in poverty, because it would mean that South Korea has to pay more taxes? I don't know what or how exactly you're thinking this through, but I'm thinking the people of my race back in South Korea are much more worried about reuniting their entire country than they are about paying extra dollars for it.
The Korean people will be one again.

Very very beautiful, no words.
First song i learn to play in Harmonica when i was a child ... Listen this song make my all childhood memory come back ...
Beautiful. Just plain beautiful. I'm in awe at the sheer brilliance and emotion evoked by this song.
Gave me goosebumps while listening to this exquisite piece. I'm not Korean but I can say that I love this music.
Loved watching this concert, they even played the AMERICAN NATIONAL ANTHEM IN NK! :D
It'a amazing how a memory from way, way back can make you cry in the present, be it something sad or some situation that you wish could be repeated but will never be again.
I remeber when this happened, it was stunning. thanks for posting.

This was one of the best events of 2008, The Best American Orchestra performing the most famous Korean song in Pyongyang!
Beautiful performance. Music transcends ANY boundary- even the political. Music is universal.
can feel such a good melody in the song
I know no better version than this ... absolutely beautiful ... love it so much!

This Song is even Better if they have played with Tradition Music Instruments...
I'd like to see that, too!
I too would like to see it, but let’s not go too far, it would not be better. But it would not be worse:). Music rules!
What are the traditional music instruments to play Arirang?

It would be nice if the uploader would have included the names of the musicians and conductor (or at least the soloists and lead chairs).

Beautiful song. Just one question. If the Korean Peninsula is to be united, who would you like to lead? North, or South Korea?
The South. The North ruling would probably put the entire peninsula into poverty, and it's human rights record would be abysmal.
