    Exceptionally clear review of the capabilities specific for the activity. As others have mentioned, I would also like to add that any concerns about water intrusion is solved by carrying a spare battery. We have used the RINO for Search and Rescue under very harsh conditions, and having a spare battery is a nice reassurance rather than having to rely on more wiring/connections etc. to potentially power your device.

    You have done a great job describing the GPS functions. Would you kindly test the device for two way radio distance and post your results. Thank you.

    Peer to peer positioning is a fantastic technology. I was originally looking for a walkie system so when I’m out duning in the sand dunes with my kids, that we could communicate if we got separated. But this buddy sharing Gps seems to be a no brainer. Obviously the American price of $450 per unit puts me at $1,000+ after tax... but still seems like a price worth paying for a little more piece of mind. Thanks for the review.

    Great review. I saw that you have a white ktm plug at the end of the Montana rugged mount. Where do you plug that to on the bike ?

      I use both Oz Topo and Garmin Topo Australia and NZ maps. I swap between them, as both show slightly different things, depending on where you are. Oz Topo seems generally better for more major tracks and roads, and the Garmin topo seems a little more accurate for serious offroad tracks.

    Great review.
    Do they have some sort of texting function to send messages to mobiles or other rino users?
    Also does the cradle come in the box or is that a separate item you have to buy?
    Cheers

    • @keithjob
      @keithjob  3 года назад

      yes you can text other Rinos if they are in UHF range (~5-10km). That cradle is for the Rino 650 and is sold separately.

      @@keithjob just got my Rino 750 on the weekend. Can’t wait to use it.
      Obviously your Bluetooth donegal works great but for a quick wired connection from the Rino to Sena 20s do you know if you can just run a 2.5mm to 2.5mm cable between the 2 of them? Or will this only give audio it the helmet from the radio and not be able to talk back?

    Hi Keith, Thanks for the video, did you purchase a additional Map and which one, similar use for 4wd/trailbike riding. the base Map just doesn't seem to have enough detail for trails and only sticks to cities.

    • @keithjob

      I have OzTopo maps which I quite like, because you can turn off (remove) the contours layer and just leave the roads. Way easier to read than say the Garmin Topo Aust map.

    Great job, very informative video, thanks Keith.
    The blurb on the 750 says “Rino 750 supports advanced mapping capabilities such as BirdsEye Satellite Imagery (subscription required).”
    Do you know of / do you use this feature and is it worth the subscription?
    The blurb also makes note of “Emergency alert reporting lets other Rino 700 series users” … is this similar to InReach or SPOT 2-way message functionality?
    Or is a SPOT / InReach still a necessary or viable second device?
    Thanks.

    • @keithjob
      @keithjob  2 года назад

      I've never used birdseye so can't comment. Basically google maps satellite pics on the device. Re. the emergency reporting... that is the location sharing feature I discussed, which is limited by UHF range. (So not far!) Still need an inreach or spot in my opinion.

    Hey Keith would you recommend the Garmin Rino 750 for a goto gps for road touring on a motorcycle? Does the map keep up ? I just really like the gps / uhf all in one its a no brainer for me as long as the maps can keep up at decent speeds
    Cheers and love your technical videos and would be Interested in buying your home-made Bluetooth dongle

      @keithjob  3 года назад +1

      Hi Maccas, thanks for the comments! Re. the Rino 750, I found the map struggled to keep up at higher speeds.. lower speeds in the bush tracks, no probs. So, I personally wouldn't recommend it as a single unit for road use.

    Thank you, very useful video. Very detailed and very helpful.
    A couple of additional questions please.
    We have 2 Garmin Rino 750's and I am learning how to get the best out of them. I primarily want them for uhf communication and tracking of my partner in case they run into difficulty. My apologies for these basic questions but I simply cannot find the answers in the Garmin instructions. It would be nice if Garmin provided a detailed 'how to navigate' video or instruction book. If there already is one, please tell me where I can find it.
    Questions:
    Q1. How can I attach a Widgit image to the 'home' page showing battery condition/life?
    Q2. What does the Widgit showing a short vertical line with a green filled rectangle mean?
    Q3. As the radio can transmit at a maximum of 5W, why would I need/want to select a lower transmission wattage?
    Q4. How do I read and understand the tracking screen? We normally set the parked vehicle as the Waypoint and then go bush from that point, finally returning to the same point. Each of us has the other on our radio as a contact. 1/ What does the blue arrow indicate and how do I use this? What does the red 'pin' indicate when I touch the screen, and how do I use this? How do I track to follow and find my other partner? How do I track my way back to the waypoint/vehicle? Is there an index/description of what all the indicators on a navigate screen mean and how to use them?
    Thank you,
    Peter.

      Some answers...
      1) Don't think it's possible. But swipe down from top of screen, or tap the power button on the side, and then you can see battery indicator on top of screen.
      2) Top left of screen? That is satellite signal strength indicator. There will be 5 bars increasing in size as the signal gets stronger.
      3) Battery life. Lower wattage means less power used. If you are relatively close to each other (

    Does the gps triangle show you which direction you are facing/pointing? To confirm - You can only see the other person if they send the "Pull" information, right? It doesn't keep tracking while moving.

      Correct, location ping is sent each time a UHF transmission is made, or using the manual button beneath the PTT button. It is not continual.

      except that .. you don't have the ability to see others in your group in real time. This is a very handy feature.
      I use this feature for other than motorcycling .. and it allows me to find an injured or incapacitated hiker, hidden from normal view, without ANY input by them ... as long as the unit is turned on.
      Could easily be a life saving feature!

      It does indeed fit. I think it's slightly taller than the 650, so the arm of the cradle may be bent up a bit more. But I used my 750 in a 650 cradle for quite a while before switching to the spine clip. My brother still uses his 750 in the 650 cradle.

    Just wondering about the mount for the rino 750. I’ve been trying to find one like you show however only able to get hold of a holder for the 650, which is different.
    On another note: channel 40, doesn’t link up with other units, seems to be a known Garmin problem.
    Made a bracket to hold the rino 750.

    • @keithjob
      @keithjob  2 года назад

      The cradle in the video is the 650 cradle. Yes the 750 is slightly taller than the 650, but it fits. Another choice is the spine clip, which I am currently using.

    • @1iadventures
      @1iadventures 2 года назад

      @@keithjob Ok thanks for the reply. I just found the 650 cradle and yes it does fit. I've recently made an aluminium one with two bungee straps to hold it in. Looking at the 2 holders, I think I'll continue with the aluminium one as it is a bit lower profile. I had been using the spline clip however it was getting very sloppy and not staying secured.
      How have you gone with the channel 40 issue?

    • @keithjob
      @keithjob  2 года назад

      @@1iadventures Ch 40 is not one I use, so it doesn't particularly bother me. But last time I checked yes it was still just static. Pretty poor effort on Garmin's behalf, considering this is a known issue for at least 2 years, probably more.
