Have you tried training with a robot before? 🤖

    • @-danR
      @-danR 2 года назад +3

Played with a Stiga, briefly, in the early 70's.
I trained with a plywood backboard at the far end for backspin returns, and a rubber-surfaced cellular foam backboard mid-table for topspin returns at extreme pace, countering, smashing, looping, etc.. If you could call those 'robots'.
The biggest improvement in sheer power, snap, and velocity came from swinging a bare barbell bar (say that quickly three times... g'won, I dare ya...) and a 15 pound unbalanced barbell.
I was rated 17th in my province, but I was among the top 5 in backhand (and forehand) drive/loop power. I would have been a top-10 player, but had an aversion to push-returns. Everything was looped, flicked, rolled, or swatted, including serves; good players found me very predictable so I never advanced.

If that's me, the backboards were all hand-made. The foam sheet was a 2x3 foot floor standing pad. It was fortunately ideal for the combination of not-too-fast but topspin-return characteristics. The pace it forced you into (3-4 drives per _second_ ) meant extreme development of pace, block, and reflexes in real time play. Also had a glass plate with vertical undulations, which was not much good for spin, but great for dealing with unexpected directions: fh, bh, and gut-shots where you _really_ had to decide fast.
I also made a hand made wheel robot. Currently working on a AR robot with actuators built into a real racquet to simulate sound and hand-feel coming directly _from_ the virtual ball strike on the blade. But that project is highly classified.

There is this cool robot from china - Huipang HP07. Cheap but it oscillates, can do sidespin, topspin and backspin, and serves!

I built my own robot that is similar to the Butterfly Amicus and in a very short time I have made improvements. It simply allows you to focus on one particular skill and repeat it hundreds of times to fine tune it. Another nice thing with a robot is that they never complain, get bored, need to use the washroom, or stop for a lunch break :)

Good job Dan! but like you said in the middle of the video about Franziska turning his body and start from the hip. you have to keep in mind that on your piece of video from him, he was doing only that shot. when you was doing a push followed by a shot so timing is shorter for you to really fully arm your arm like he does. but yeah, if you can get that very slight rotation of the body on top of arm speed, you'll win power. you have the good habit now to really use your legs to push to give that plus in concurrence force. leg push + rotation + arm speed = BOOM! 🤪😆 the ball already has spin, all you have to do is put blunt trauma force to it. a bit of a brush motion but not much. if you can aim for opponent's belly or extreme opposit side, it will be goooold. 👌

To anyone with no access to a robot etc. Here’s what I did to improve my backhand flick….play with 90% on your backhand and do the flick constantly. You’ll obviously lose a lot of games but trust me, after about 2-3 months (if you’re a beginner to almost intermediate) you’ll be so much better with the bh flick that you’ll nullify most serves coming your way. Short of me saying it puts fear in my opponents eye whenever they see me get into the bh flick position 😅

Great video, the progress is certainly visible. Over 2 years ago I bought the cheapest and simplest of all robots, and that was I believe the best sports-related investment in my life. It definitely improved my play, and it is a great cardio exercise too. Got it right before Covid hit and I was glad to have a "playing partner" during those isolation months. I even posted a RUclips video of it last year.

The only way to get a pro backhand is to watch top Chinese players (make sure u do this Dan). But I must say Dan you have improved so much from the start of your table tennis daily career! 👏 Now you need to focus on doing high quality serves that opponents will struggle against. Eg: Dima’s tomohawk serve.

Really special training video Dan. You are good already but you showed us the process of learning and private practice through the week and it did make a tangible difference. How you do it and the changes along the way with your feedback and Tom's. I really appreciate that. Most videos show you a shot and how to do it. Weight shifting is the biggest aspect of high quality spin, for backhand using only your wrists or elbow could make you do some unforced errors

    • @-danR
      @-danR 2 года назад +1

Coupling high-mass, low speed shoulder (or at least upper arm) to low-mass high-speed hand and racquet is the key. I found weight-swinging the missing training link to developing that coupling-snap, and the gain in actual muscle-strength to improve it ever more.

when looking at the side-by-side with you and patrick, he uses his left arm as a very slight counter force. like a very short compact left backhand stroke, mirroring his right arm but very small. like a karate punch when the punch extends, the other arm is retracted with equal power.

Hi there Dan, in my opinion something you neglected in the video is the usage of the left arm as a counterbalance and power generator. Your left arm doesn't move at all during backhands, while if you look at the best pros' backhands they actually utilize their left arm. Have a look at it.

The 10,000-hour rule applies to "older players"...I spent 1.5 years 5-6 days a week on the Butterfly robot mixing it up with different spins/speed consistently for 1-2 hours a night so I could get my backhand to be equal to my Forehand. CONCLUSION: It destroyed my "match play" so I am now trying to fix it I have put the robot back in its bag. My strokes are good, and I am making a lot of "Hollywood shots" but overall I am messed up but it is starting to come around with more match play...I also practiced my serves every night for over 1 hour and it has helped raise my level although now, I am having to deal with the return balls from my spinney serves another thing to help me lose games...
