It is considered a badge of honor to have a song done by Al. MJ has a couple. Yankovic was able to get permission from Michael Jackson to use the same subway set from "Bad" for the video. You should check out more of Weird Al. Yes he does original content as well.
What I love is Michael Jackson not only approved of the parody, is he gave Weird Al the opportunity to use the sound stage for this parody, and I have to agree, the sound effects used was hilarious. It briefly broke the fourth wall and really hit home of the silliness.
Besides a plethora of impressive great parodies, he also did a lot of style parodies/homages, where he writes his own song in the style of other artists. E.g. "Genius in France" like Frank Zappa, "Bob" like Bob Dylan (the video is like one of Dylan videos, but the music is Weird Al. The Lyrics are something else, and you may need some time reading them to get how they make sense.) And he got many original songs like "Pancreas" (scientifically correct), "Weasel Stomping Day", "Hardware Store", ...
He has some great songs. Some suggestions for future reactions: Like a Surgeon Amish Paradise Living With A Hearnia. The three I listed are all parodies. He did do some songs that parodied a style but not a specific song.
I don't see it in the other comments yet: parody of Nirvana "Smells Like Teen Spirit", "Smells Like Nirvana ". When Al called Kurt Cobain he asked Al if it was going to be about food, and Al said no, it's about how no one can understand you.
One thing that cracks me up: Many people think 'fat' people are all unhealthy. However, it is not so much as a matter of weight, but health. Think sumo wrestlers.
With the expectation of Coolio; Al got permission from artist he parodied. Coolio's management have Al the okay, but didn't tell the rapper himself. So he was very unhappy with the song parody upon release.
True, but later on when Coolio was on the show HOT ONES, he admitted he was wrong and he never should have been upset and that it was actually a great parody.
So this isn't actually the same set as Michael used for the Bad video. Michael Jackson shot his short film on location in New York in a real subway station. Michael shot his own parody of his video starring all kids, for his Moonwaler film, for which he built a recreation of his real subway set. When he got word that Weird Al wanted to make this parody, he granted his blessing and even loaned him use of this set he had built, before tearing it down.
"I've got more Chins than China Town." I'm sorry but that's funny. 🤣 A very funny/serious song by Weird Al is "I Remember Larry" off of his "Bad Hair Day" album.
hi michael, hope you're good. weird al did a parody of beat it called eat it. he's done so many parody songs and they are all funny. michael jackson reportedly said of eat it, if weird al doesn't do a parody you're not famous. i really don't think he'd be too bothered, i've never heard that he was precious about his music. al takes the song, rewrites it, so yes he does do it all, and tries to do a video as close to the original as possible. i think he's great fun. hang on i've just spotted pink floyd, see you over there........
The word on the street is that MJ loved this video and gave him location suggestions, like the same subway used in bad. Now for hate, Coolio despised Amish Paradise and issued a number of threats before his buddies were able to calm him down. By the way its pronounced Yankovick, not Vich.
There are SO MANY GREAT Weird Al parodies, and this is one of his earlier ones, but I love you for doing this one. You've GOT to check out his take on Lady Gaga's "I Was Born This Way" ("I Perform This Way"). Or Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" ... seriously ... you've got to check them out!
We're around went to Michael Jackson and got pull provable same set same crew same actors and he was laughing all the time he was making you he made several other videos like this one a parodies of all the songs
Dude, Weird Al is a genius. If you watch his song Bob, you mind 🤯. Every song line in the song is a palindrome, reads the same backward and forward. It’s insane. Also check out his parody of Lady Gaga’s Born This Way, Al’s is Perform This Way. It’ll break your brain to watch.
Weird Al always gets the artist's permission to do a parody (though technically he doesn't typically need to unless they own their music). He said one of the few people who ever turned him down was Prince.
He doesn't even need permission if the artist does own the music. Anyone can post a parody on line under the "fair use" Supreme Court ruling. An example is Al posted You're Pitiful, a parody of You're Beautiful by James Blunt.
Led Zeppelin had also denied Weird Al's request. In the 'Trapped in the Drive Thru' MV they play a little guitar solo of 'Black Dog' Weird Al did 'couch potato' a parody of Eminem 'Lose Yourself.' But Eminem had asked him not to make a music video. Eminem has also been on Al TV. Weird Al takes an interview of Eminem and edits it with him asking Weird questions with out of context answers.
This one is a classic that goes well with his parody of "Beat It" called "Eat It", lol. He did do a few original songs but they never took off like his parodies did, and YES - he had a rule that he'd always reach out to the original artist beforehand and get their blessing, and wouldn't do the parody if they weren't okay with it. He said in an interview once that he had had the idea of parodying Paul McCartney's song that Paul recorded with his late wife Linda, "Live and Let Die" as the parody "Chicken Pot Pie", and Al reached out to Paul and Paul said he thought it would be funny but that his late wife was a strict vegetarian and animal rights activist and wouldn't think it was funny so out of respect Al never did that one. Many musicians actually have come to view being parodied by Weird Al as a badge of honor, a sign that they made it big enough to get parodied which is kinda cool and a good reminder to not take yourself too seriously. Cheers.
Al’s version - Original “It’s all about the Pentiums” - All about the Benjamin’s “Amish Paradise” - Gangsta Paradise “Tacky” - Happy “Word Crimes” - Blurred Lines “Perform This Way” - Born This Way “Foil” - Royals You won’t go wrong with any of those parodies. His originals are also great: “Germs” “One More Minute” And so on.
There' s Jurassic Park,, "Achy Breaky Song" "Amish Paradise" "Another One Rides the Bus"" "The Saga Begins" "Yoda" I Think I'm a Clone Now" "You Don't Love Me Anymore" What I think is a complete list is on Wikipedia. Please binge review.
If you would like my top three, this one of course, "Another One Rides the Bus" and my favorite "Amish Paradise". I read that Coolio (Gangsta's Paradise") was not impressed at first, but decided to let him do it. And so, we have a classic.
Amish Paradise, Smells Like Nirvana, Like a Surgeon. Of course, you have to do the originals first: Coolio-Gangsta's Paradise (you already did that one), Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit (you already did that one), Madonna - Like A Virgin (don't think you did that one yet) There are so many other great Weird Al parodies though. And he does have original songs he has done. OH! And you have GOT to do "The Saga Begins" which is a parody of Star Wars to the tune of Don McLean's American Pie.
Michael Jackson loved Weird Al's parodies and they met in person a few times. Maybe the joke hasn't aged well (it could be considered as body-shaming, although I'm sure Weird Al didn't mean it like that) but it still makes me giggle. He wanted to make a parody of "Black or White" next but MJ declined as he thought it had too important message to be made fun of. And later Yankovic praised MJ's decision.
I've been a Weird Al fan for four decades. If you listen to his discography, you hear his parodies becoming increasingly sophisticated and nuanced. He is backed by a very talented band that can play anything. Another One Rides the Bus is one of his earliest, based on Queen's Another One Bites the Dust. In his very earliest parodies, he sings in a crazy voice, and accompanies himself on accordian (he said his parents paid for lessons because, apparently, they didn't think he had been beaten up enough). But he is actually an excellent singer, and his later parodies sound a lot like the original. I love his straight parodies like Word Crimes (for Blurred Lines), Tacky ( Happy), White and Nerdy (Ridin' Dirty), Amish Paradise ( Gangsta's Paradise), Couch Potato (Lose Yourself), Trapped in the Drive Thru (Trapped in the Closet), Perform This Way (Born This Way). It's a very long list. In his videos, watch for celebrity cameos and LOTS of sight gags. Zoom in and see whose Wikipedia page he's editing on White and Nerdy, and who has his top eight spaces in MySpace. Zoom in and read the signs and the cover on the Amish porn magazine in Amish Paradise. Forgot a couple of the Nine Inch Nails parodies: Germs and Livin' in the Fridge. And one by Dire Straits (Beverly Hillbillies for Money for Nothing; Mark Knopfler plays on it). His style parodies sound like the real band, until you listen to the words. My favorite is his Doors style parody: Craigs List, where he channels Jim Morrison. The late, great Ray Manzarek lends his signature sound on the keyboards. Do Hardware Store, but whatever you do, never ever EVER pause during the third verse! You'll kill the effect. Amazing. And on every album, he has to show off his accordion skills by doing a mashup of current popular songs and making a polka medley out of them. His latest polka is the Hamilton Polka, where the set the entire broadway play to a polka medley. He and Lin Manuel Miranda are friends. Lin loved it. Enjoy! The style parodies
If you do the Hamilton Polka, you HAVE to watch the video. He has taken his polka medley mashup, and everything is nearly perfectly synched with the actual video of the Broadway play. ruclips.net/video/oNEdEDbhTQw/видео.html
One masterpeice Weird All was able to put together was an American Pie parody (using the tune) in order to tell the story of Anakin in Star Wars called, The Saga Begins. You have to check it out.
This was done at a time when people weren't as serious and angry as they are now.. Jackson aided Yankovic and approved the parody. If you want to see another good Yankovic parody, check out one of Lady Gaga 'Perform This Way'.
At First Weird Al Yankovic was not loved by Artist or Artists of the original songs he was doing Parody's of...until i can't remember which high level Artist stood up for him and said let him keep doing what he does best make folks laugh then after that Weird Al just like (Eminem when mentioning folks in his lyrics) it was then viewed as being Honorable when their songs were Being Parodied By Weird Al
@Michael Duffy: MORE recommended parody songs / videos by "Weird Al" to watch ( also you should watch the original first, to be able to be familiar with what "Weird Al" is doing a parody of ) - starting out with "My Bologna" ( parody of "My Sharona" by The Knacks ) - recorded in the college radio station bathroom ( where "Weird Al" was a D.J., while going to college, ) and sent to the "The Dr. Demento Radio Show," where it became REAL popular quickly. Then "Weird Al" got his first national T.V. exposure on "The Tomorrow Show" with Tom Synder ( late night T.V. talk show ) - performing live his hit "Another One Rides the Bus" ( parody of "Another One Bites the Dust" by Queen. ) Of course "Weird Al" REALLY became big, a short time later, in the early days of MTV, making parody songs, and parody song videos, of other artists' hit songs and music videos. Like: "Weird Al's" "Eat It" ( parody of "Beat It" by Michael Jackson, ) "Like a Surgeon" ( parody of "Like a Virgin" by Madonna, ) "Smells Like Nirvana" ( parody of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana, ) "I Love Rocky Road" [ parody of "I Love Rock 'n Roll" by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts ( cover of The Arrows, ) ] "Ricky" ( parody of "Micky" by Toni Basil, also a loving parody of the famed, old, 1950's, in black-and-white, sitcom "I Love Lucy," ) and MANY more.
@Michael Duffy: Also, also - continued from the previous comments: Opps! How could I have forgotten to recommend? - "Living with a Hernia" ( parody of "Living in America" by James Brown. ) Here "Weird Al" gives us a hilarious medical lesson about the having of, and types of, hernias - all to the tune of the old, James Brown hit "Living in America" [ also was used in the movie 'Rocky IV' ( 1985 ) - "Living in America," that is - for former "Rocky" rival, turned ally, "Apollo Creed's" entrance into the ring. ] And then there's "Perform This Way" ( parody of "Born This Way" by Lady Gaga, ) "Weird Al's" ode to the strangeness that is Lady Gaga ( and yet NOT in a disrespectful manner to Gaga or her song's message. ) Brilliant use of digital technology - CGI- ing "Weird Al's" face over the faces of a dancer, and then a contortionist. Also - if you are as big of a 'STAR WARS' nerd ( fan ) as many "Weird Al" fans out there, you would enjoy "Yoda" ( parody of "Lola" by The Kinks ) - parody of "Luke Skywalker's" first meeting up with "Yoda" on the planet Dagoba in 1980's 'STAR WARS: Episode 5 - The Empire Strikes Back.' And "The Saga Begins" ( parody of "American Pie" by Don McLean ) - parody / telling of the plot of 'STAR WARS: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace.'
Michael actually loved Weird Al and gave him permission to use the same set for both "Fat" and "Eat It" (parody of "Beat It"). If I remember correctly, he even helped with some of the choreography and got Al in touch with some of his original dancers for Eat it. The same happened with James Brown and "Living With A Hernia" (parody of "Living In America") - James let Al use his stage and coached him on the dance moves. It's probably one of the best imitations I've ever seen. Some other great ones are "Amish Paradise / Gansta's Paradise" and "White & Nerdy / Ridin' Dirty" but if you really want to se a wordsmith in action, my current favorite is "Word Crimes / Blurred Lines". Unbelievable.
also consider that he was performing this in a fat suit. And MJ loved this. He had to give permission. And YES, Al does do some originals, but usually uses a known song at least for the background. I would recommend his Star Wars parody. It is so spot on in the story telling.
Jump down the rabbit hole. Al has a ton of material. Always best to view the original first so you can catch the great humor and sight gags. Keep on doing what you are doing!
It is considered a badge of honor to have a song done by Al. MJ has a couple.
Yankovic was able to get permission from Michael Jackson to use the same subway set from "Bad" for the video.
You should check out more of Weird Al. Yes he does original content as well.
michael jackson was part of the video he not only approved but helped in its production
He also let al use the same subway he used in bad
Facts!
James Brown helped with the Livin' With a Hernia video, too.
@@everyonelovesmajima Fact!
All this, true story
MJ approved according to weird al. A great original is “you don’t love me anymore”
Al did so many great parodies. The first 2 to pop into my head are Eat It and Like a Surgeon.
"When I sit around the house, I really sit AROUND the house."
Weird Al is so talented! You gotta hear White and Nerdy. It's his best, imo.
Pizza out of your pocket??!!😳😂😂😂
What I love is Michael Jackson not only approved of the parody, is he gave Weird Al the opportunity to use the sound stage for this parody, and I have to agree, the sound effects used was hilarious. It briefly broke the fourth wall and really hit home of the silliness.

And he got many original songs like "Pancreas" (scientifically correct), "Weasel Stomping Day", "Hardware Store", ...
"Word Crimes" is a more recent (a parody of "Blurred Lines") which really shows off his skills especially in grammar and spelling.
He has some great songs. Some suggestions for future reactions:
Like a Surgeon
Amish Paradise
Living With A Hearnia.

A very funny/serious song by Weird Al is "I Remember Larry" off of his "Bad Hair Day" album.
Amish paradise parody of Gangsters Paradise and White and Nerdy parody of Ridin dirty. You will thank me, my friend.
He's doing what a lotta folks think about stuff....but don't do it! You gotta be talented to do his shtick. Hilarious to watch. Done in fun! 👍😎
That is the actual set. Mj let Al use it
@michaelwduffy
Weird Al himself sais on the Howie Mandel talk show.
Him and michawl are legal co-owners and writers of this song.
The line was actually, "More chins, than a China town"!
I like Eat It and a few others. I am limited in my appreciation of Weird Al's videos in that I don't watch the original artists' videos.
Not only MJ approved it, he let Al use the same set his Bad video used.
He is hilarious 😂😂
best Weird Al: White and Nerdy, Hardware Store, It's All About the Pentiums, The Saga Begins, Yoda, Ebay
hi michael, hope you're good. weird al did a parody of beat it called eat it. he's done so many parody songs and they are all funny. michael jackson reportedly said of eat it, if weird al doesn't do a parody you're not famous. i really don't think he'd be too bothered, i've never heard that he was precious about his music. al takes the song, rewrites it, so yes he does do it all, and tries to do a video as close to the original as possible. i think he's great fun. hang on i've just spotted pink floyd, see you over there........

If weird al makes fun of you it's a complement it means your famous.
Well he got Michael Jackson blessing to werid Al but if Michael Jackson laugh out Loud.
All weird al you have to know original first to really laugh at it
No, M.J. Helped with the music and this video
Ya know what's weirder than the video is a big jar of mayo on your couch
Weird Al always gets the artist's permission to do a parody (though technically he doesn't typically need to unless they own their music). He said one of the few people who ever turned him down was Prince.
"Purple Brain" or "Golden rain" would have been nice but probably quite discusting.
In the 'Trapped in the Drive Thru' MV they play a little guitar solo of 'Black Dog'
Weird Al did 'couch potato' a parody of Eminem 'Lose Yourself.' But Eminem had asked him not to make a music video.
Eminem has also been on Al TV. Weird Al takes an interview of Eminem and edits it with him asking Weird questions with out of context answers.
@WookbooKtheeKpopTrucker where is the animated Couch Potato video? I didn't think there is any video for it?
@garylee3685 you might be correct.
I thought it was amongst the several animated videos he made for his bsides. I can't find it.

Many musicians actually have come to view being parodied by Weird Al as a badge of honor, a sign that they made it big enough to get parodied which is kinda cool and a good reminder to not take yourself too seriously.
Cheers.
He did more than "a few" originals... they're about half of his work, if not slightly more than half.

Weird Al is the GOAT of Parody!!
Also; the set for Michael Jackson's Best It, was also used for Weird Al's Eat It. Jackson was on set during the filming; to make sure it's accuracy
His parody of Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit is another great parody
MJ gave him help for the coreogaphy ahahah ...Weird Al asked him before and MJ was amazed by the idea. ;)
Weird Al Yankovic should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame....no question.
Weird Al does do non-parody songs. I'd suggest my favourite: Hardware Store.
Having your a parody of your song done by Weird Al Yankovic is an honor. Please react to White and Nerdy parody of Riding Dirty.
Al’s version - Original
“It’s all about the Pentiums” - All about the Benjamin’s
“Amish Paradise” - Gangsta Paradise
“Tacky” - Happy
“Word Crimes” - Blurred Lines
“Perform This Way” - Born This Way
“Foil” - Royals
You won’t go wrong with any of those parodies.
His originals are also great:
“Germs”
“One More Minute”
And so on.
Hmmm…not sure about this…of course, this is the kind of silly, crazy stuff he is known for!
One of my favourites is the Parody he did of Don McClean's American Pie. It was based on Star Wars Phantom Menace, called, THE SAGA BEGINS.
Weird Al is a Genius in France
Weird Al is The G.O.A.T.
MJ absolutely looved him, and even helped with sets and choreography and "dancers"

His song parodies of other artists are fantastic but his own original songs are also incredible!
Amish Paradise, Smells Like Nirvana, Like a Surgeon. His parody of the crash test dummy song
You aint made it till u have a song redone by Weird Al
One of the hoods is a then unknown Wesley Snipes.

Then "Weird Al" got his first national T.V. exposure on "The Tomorrow Show" with Tom Synder ( late night T.V. talk show ) - performing live his hit "Another One Rides the Bus" ( parody of "Another One Bites the Dust" by Queen. )
Of course "Weird Al" REALLY became big, a short time later, in the early days of MTV, making parody songs, and parody song videos, of other artists' hit songs and music videos.
And then there's "Perform This Way" ( parody of "Born This Way" by Lady Gaga, ) "Weird Al's" ode to the strangeness that is Lady Gaga ( and yet NOT in a disrespectful manner to Gaga or her song's message. ) Brilliant use of digital technology - CGI- ing "Weird Al's" face over the faces of a dancer, and then a contortionist.
Weird Al is a genius. He always asks for permission to do a parody.
Do yourself a favor. Before you listen to a Weird Al song, be sure you check out the song being parodied first.
