I'm 34 years old and was homeless since i was 16. The last 6 years i was homeless in Echo park but camped by dodger stadium. i was told by a park ranger stay out of site out mind. That worked for me i stayed hidden and people didn't even know i was there just keep your spot clean. Almost all the homeless are on drugs or have some mental disability shoot i was a heroin addict. A Lot of them are just not ready to change or get clean and admit they got a problem. Some are young they'll get tired of living like that i did. It wasn't hard to turn my life around. I Just admitted i had a problem got on methadone went to homeless health care told them i wanted off the street the next week im in transitional housing. I am now a year and half clean and just got approved for an apartment. So if your homeless and reading this it is real easy to change your situation. But it's up to you to want something better for yourself.
Jeremy congratulations on your new journey and home . Sobriety and it’s benefits are amazing keep on the path of recovery. It only works when you are ready to see yourself as the problem and you come to the conclusion that you would like to be happy and live . I’m so glad to hear you decided to do something different .
happy to to read that you get out of it. Why city officials do not work there to get people out of street? They should get them out and help them with health, housing and employment.

I was homeless after high school graduation 1979 in the Great North Woods in Northern New Hampshire. Crap family, no jobs. I had to live in a tent even in winter. For a living hunted, trapped animals for food and pelts, fished, picked berries, cattail shoots whatever it took to survive. Picked the dump for metals to sell. Bathed in cold mountain streams. Damn I made it. Nature tried to kill me several times but made me tough as can be. Over the years I have turned it around. Overcoming difficulties makes you stronger. Carry on, Seize the Day.
You should write a memoirs or autobiography, I never see books about people that survived homelessness and then got back into mainstream society, for want of a better term.
There’s a sign that says “no camping.” Pitch a tent literally right in front of the sign and it’s no problem. I dare you to try that with other “rules” in LA like leaving your car in front of a “no parking” sign.

Politicians don't want to solve the homeless problem, it would put many projects that politicians line their pockets with government subsidized funding and construction contracts to their friends. This is a major cash cow for construction businesses, politicians, and county and city officials. If they solved the problem all those contracts, funding, etc would disappear. Check out Venice, the cost of housing is so inflated that it's impossible for these areas to actually build housing that fits the economic model, there is a video done by epoch times, with a city council member who explains how and why the discrepancy from cost of building homes for homeless and why the problem will never be solved, even though there are non profit organizations that can provide shelter to homeless for a fraction of the costs of these multi-billion dollar construction projects. It's really eye opening when you hear what can be done versus what is being done and what is being approved by state politicians and businesses

Well California decided they wanted to take care of the homeless problem of the country but they just made it worse because they never had a plan to begin with. If they did it's a failure. Homeless has tripled over the last 15 years in the state and they are responsible for the rise in addictions and deaths of these individuals.
but it was their choice to live like this, they have earned it one way or another, who are we to deny them the option to live as they choose? no compassion for those who do not value their own life, who do not make an effort to live a better life. compassion is a finite resource, and allotted to those who seek it through effort, which is a manifestation of desire for something better.

The pandemic didn't change anything for people who have been homeless 20+ years. The increase is from people who know they won't be moved because of covid, nothing more.
Echo Park is becoming Skid Row if they don’t do something about it. I lived in LA back in 1998 for about a year and back then there wasn’t a single homeless tent at the park. Sure we had an occasional homeless guy sleeping on the benches or along tree-lined areas on the outskirts of the park, but for the most part the homeless were more discreet and out of sight since they tended to sleep along hedges or on the back of buildings, but nothing like it now. This completely caught me by surprise to see how much worse the homeless problems have gotten now in LA. The host of the video said that the official estimate of the homeless number is about 45,000. I say that is absurd! Even when I was living in LA 23 years ago the homeless number was probably at least three times that many! Now that the problem has gotten much worse I think it is probably at least five times that many! There are homeless people everywhere in the US, but no other cities in America has the homeless numbers of LA. The only areas that might be comparable to LA are the areas along the San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose metropolitan areas since I know they’re bad there as well, but I have never been there so I can’t say for sure. However, I’ve been in dozens of US cities and LA is by far has the worst homeless problems that I have ever seen! Even back then I saw lots of homeless people sleeping on the backs of most buildings, apartment complexes, and shopping centers. However, the homeless people were more discreet and less in the open since they did not sleep in tents like they were in the Skid Row, or nowadays, in Echo Park. They simply find a quiet corner and quietly kept to themselves. In the evening you always see them coming out digging trash cans and dumpsters looking for food to eat.

He doesn't care about drug addicts and mentally ill or anybody but himself and his family. BLAME HIM. My town, city, county nor state looks like this. Enabling is the problem!!!! Keep giving them free shit and they'll never amount to anything. I know because my brother was homeless in Cali. Lagun Miguel and San Bernadino were his choices to live. He told me he preferred it because it cost him nothing. Was offered help by family and others but just wanted money so he could drink. He died in 2019 at age 58 after being homeless for 31 years. Said most prefer to live that way and some don't. The ones that don't haven't got the skills to get a job that pays enough to survive there but stay because of the weather. @@denisecummings4225 facts. I have an aunt that is homeless by choice. She doesn't want to rent because she doesn't want to follow whatever rules the landlords have. My brother has gotten her jobs a couple of times but she doesn't show up consistently so gets fired. My mother has offered her to stay at her home but again, my aunt doesn't want to follow the general rules a household has so she prefers to be homeless. Drug addiction is also another factor.
You are doing such a public service bringing attention to the homeless issue and I pray God always keeps you safe as you go to the encampments and as you travel.
They should devise a jobs program - and take those that refuse to take their meds or refuse to work to a place like the Salton Sea area and let them live there.
For as much as California claims to spend on the homeless problem they sure don't have much to show for all of that money spent. The politicians and activists encourage this by not enforcing the laws we have.

My point exactly. It's insanity.
Oh you are so heartless! This people need help from government. Nobody should sleep on street! If government would offer some affordable prices for living and basic salary, then these people would have something to lean on. Try to put yourself in their shoes!! How can they start over again when they are at "lowest" point with no solution. They can't stand up and "better" themselves without government help. So, if people give them something that little bit help them to survive till the next day. Can you picture that in your mind?? Instead of judging from your "comfortable" position!!
@@sanja12 Have you ever seen government housing? It's scary. We need an economy where people can work again. Making people dependent is not good for their souls or society in general.
@@YA-qj8fx Yes, I have seen government's housing. Why is that scary?
Take example of government in Germany or the Netherlands. Nobody is on street there only if it is their personal "choice" and even then government is offering help. Government is offering basic salary and affordable housing to everyone if they have no work and they offer reintegration project where they can slowly integrate in the work market and start searching for work. Individual most "fundamental needs" (food, drink, shelter, clothing, warmth) must be met first before they can stand on their feet and be motivated to search for work.
Giving to these people on street, is not "making them dependable" but it's helping them survive one more day.
@@sanja12 so many choose it as a lifestyle . I’m sure a lot is just cause of drugs and they don’t get them free . I can feel sorry n have heart for people that lost a home due to financial reasons , yes the government should help more but I’ve seen plenty of docs where they get benefits but choose not to go indoors . There should be shelters put up and people should use them living like this is not good for anyone.

This homeless camp looks light years better than most of the ones I see on RUclips. People without homes have ALWAYS flooded into California in hard times. Especially in the winter time. In fact it has been proven repeatedly that many Red states pay for their bus tickets one way to California. Go back and look at the Great Depression. The fact that you cannot rent a place anywhere in the city because of the prices and 3/4 the housing stock being held by real estate investors and people using them as AirBNB's? Of course you have an issue. Welcome to late stage capitalism. It has ended up exactly where science has always said that it would.

The pandemic didn't change anything for people who have been homeless 20+ years. The increase is from people who know they won't be moved because of covid, nothing more.
Another great tour, thanks. Best tour guide ever !
I really feel for these people but if I had to be homeless in LA it looks more bearable than skid row
