I’m so glad I have found this channel. I don’t have your technical facility, but you have taught me to cultivate the patience of a stalking python when working towards my goals. Stellar content, good sir. Thank you.
Completely agree with you. Learning it took a few awkward weeks/months to get into my hand. Integrating it naturally into music is something I'm still struggling with.
Honestly just listen to AAL and see what they do with it. Best as a rhythmic guitar part under the song (Earth Departure, Ectogenesis, Physical Education), to add flair to a lead part (Ectogenesis, Woven Web), or even just to create the whole riff (think Red Miso or Conflict Cartography). Study the greats and see how they do it!
By no means am i good at guitar, but thumping I’m moderately decent at and i think Tosin’s old thump course actually was helpful for it, that and the Backpfifengesicht one got me familiar with faster thumping patterns (even if i can’t perfectly play it yet lol)
It would be very nice to also have a sort of tutorial of mixing thumping and finding the tone. For instance, I learned thumping quite well and it sounds nice without being plugged in, but plugged into neural dsp it sounds quite bad. I know that part of the sound comes from your Larada active pickups, but maybe you could give us some tips on making this amazing sound and recording it. Thanks for your videos by the way, they are amazing and really helpful!
im learning this and i noticed that everyone who is proficient this has a thumb that can bend backwards. even tosins thumb looks like a dang fish hook. otherwise it seems impossible to be able to rotate ur wrist at that angle and hit the string correctly. ive got the basic 3 stroke down pretty good but incorporating the other fingers doesnt seem possible at the angle i have to hit with a straight thumb.
@@giuseppegilardi with all due respect, please tag me in a video of someone thumping proficiently with a straight thumb. Your thumb hooks back . Maybe not as much as tosins but in order to turn your hand like a key or a door knob , with your hand parallel or at a slight angle to the strings, the tip of your thumb needs to be facing up which some of us genetically aren’t able to do . Is it still possible? I’m sure there’s a way to work around it but the same rules and techniques don’t seem to apply to us non-hooked-thumb people. In order for the door knob thing to work for us, our fingers would have to perpendicular to 45 degrees across the strings as opposed to being able to thump and finger pick similarly to how you would when you play classically
@@RiffGrimez look up josh de la victoria, joseph anidjar, charlie robbins, the list goes on... i know lots of less known people who do that. but you know what? you're right, your thumb doesn't work and you'll never be able to do thumping. would you rather be right and lose or be wrong and win?
@@giuseppegilardiI’ve been practicing for at least an hour a day for three weeks now I’ve got the 3 strike thumb, thumb, index finger part down and working on 4 it’s just the way my hand is positioned seems like If I want to incorporate any string past the A string (on a 7 string) I have to change the angle and it doesn’t seem like you are. I’ve spent days trying to “turn the key” and I can’t do it unless my hand is perpendicular to 45 degrees across the strings. the only way I can do it and keep my hand where yours is if my thumb is straight out parallel with the string. I will check those guys out and if I find someone without a bent thumb I’ll see what they’re doing and get back to you. Edit: 2 minutes into Josh de la Victoria thumping video and his thumb bends backward like a mfer. I just googled it to see if I was crazy and no I’m not it’s called hitch hikers thumb or distal hyperextensibility
It’s just, so awkward to do with my thumb and understanding where my thumb should be let alone knowing how to fit all my fingers in at a weird angle too

the hardest part for me is to use is as a songwriting tool, I am figuring out the contexts in which it will be the best thing to do

Great video! I found the Thump course helpful, specifically because it also emphasized having your thumbnail grown more and mine were always so short!
