i had my first side job today (starting an AV electrical job monday) i was replacing a switch in a house. i take the plate off, metal box. romex didnt have ground wire. box didnt have a ground screw. there was a red wire from 12-3 that was unused but didnt have a wire nut on it. and the switch they bought was a 4way. i made it all work but i was reminded why i dont wanna do resi that's all.
Every green apprentice I get I recommend they watch your videos. Back home we have to have 670ish hours of classroom time to get your license. Down here you don’t and I really believe that hurts apprentices, you’re videos really help close that gap in knowledge
Something about cutin boxes I just don't like. Rewired like 90% of my house, removed the nail on boxes they used as cutin boxes, and just put screws through the side of along with all the old metal boxes with the clamp things. Due to Covid I could only get one screw on the old work box at the bix box store, I tried that box and was a headache to install and get flush, etc. I went to the supply house near me and they had Allied molded SB-1, SB-2,SB-3 series boxes I used those were so much simpler than the Carlon box and seem to be sturdier build too. To me if you can put the thing near a stud then do it and use something like this, my opinion drywall is fairly brittle and weak so I hate using that to mount anything.
Another great video, so another Like :-) PS- you should have stated that Romex is the brand name belonging to a company, not merely the name of that conductor configuration (which is a ThermoPlasticSheathed cable).
Of course there is so much more to electrical. 4way switch 220 receptical 220 breaker. Different size amp on breakers. Different size wire for corresponding amp loads. Great video for most who know nothing. You also make great videos for those of us who know something's but get stumped on other things. Best thing is to research research then research again. If in doubt call the profesional in. Electricity is nothing to take "light"ly.
Dumb question - but where can you safely use a round cut-in box? I could see maybe a small wall sconce -- but can you really install / hang a light fixture from one? I'd be nervous to ever use for a ceiling fixture -- even a light one -- good chance it could get replaced by something heavier at some point -- and person may not check the box. Are these used for ceiling fixtures at all ?
Rome? I would assume you meant romex... Only that is used in virtually every.single.home. The frequency of it's use is so insane, that there's simply no way you meant that. Beyond the brand though, he specified non-metallic sheathed cable so that just makes what you said make even less sense. So romex can't possibly be what you meant. What were you trying to say?
Can you explain the scenario where you would use a two gang over a 1900 box. Do you only use a 1900 if you need more cubic inches than a two gang allows?
I've watched several of your videos today and figured I'd ask directly and hope to get lucky with the answer I'm looking for. I need to control a 24v trolling motor using 12v as my contactor power source. I dont suppose you could point me in the right direction for which contactor to buy? Thank you and great videos.
I'm a bit confused as to what your situation is but I understand that you have a 12vdc source, and a 24vdc motor and you own a 12Vdc (coil voltage) contactor. If this is correct then all you need is a 24Vdc source to be wired in series though the contactor's common our of the Normally Open (N/O) then towards the motor.
Ah I see now you don't own the contactor. First thing you need to do is find power (Watts) requirement of the motor . Then identify if you want to use 12V or 24V to control the contactor's coil then go to a tractor supply or Autoparts store and ask for a XX volts contactor to power a XXX watt 24v motor . Then follow what I wrote above. Source: studied controls and automation.
Hey, I'm a teacher in my fifth year of teaching in WI. I'm looking to switch careers (financing a home, family, etc are impossible on a teacher salary after our unions were gutted). Do you think a teacher would make it as an electrician?
With a eagerness to learn and the right attitude you'll be successful No Problem. There are countless jobs within the electrical field. From residential to commercial/ Industrial etc make sure the area you decide to go into matches your desire and ability.
I just finished working with a guy, at the end I told him if he was ever tired of being an electrician he should be a teacher. He laughed, telling me he became an electrician after being a teacher for a couple years. He is a fantastic electrician.
I have my son watching your videos. I just started using him on jobs and I think your videos are a great way for him to learn things on his off time.
Love your videos man, been watching for a year or so and can honestly say your videos helped me pass my master exam Friday.
Another great lesson, thanks as always love your content young man.

death to us all
Yeaah dudee!.. (steve o voice)
LOL
Short sweet and to the point, I liked it...
Crystal clear.
" THATS IT"
Thanks as always. But can we get a review of Wago connectors and whether you tape around duplexes and switches? Thanks again.
I don't give a crap what anybody says always tape your switches and receptacles in a metal box or if I have more than one device in a multi-gang box

I'm a huge fan of the newer Arlington adjustable boxes. They are worth every penny
Missed emt, rigid, weather head, j-boxes, pipe bender, UF wire, Mc cable, wire nuts,I can go on brother but good staples so to say
"This is a drywall screw"
been doing this for decades, never heard anyone else call it a fancake but me

We call bell box fs box and use tamper resistant devices
You missed the SWB25.
Raco number but its the pancake box for outlets on a island where the receptacle location is blocked by drawers.

Very helpful
What about four way switches
What about a peak box?
Haaaaa read the title wrong thought you were talking about materials that are hard to find right now! Still great video brotha!
Is there anything better than a bell box and an in use cover for a face mounted exterior outlet?
I've been an electrician for years and I can count on one hand how many times I've used Rome in residential.

@@glasshalfempty1984 some locations require conduit in residential. I think Chicago is one.
But yeah, that is really hard to believe otherwise.
All depends on your location. Westcoast is pretty much all Romex for single family homes.
@@glasshalfempty1984 thanks john. Maybe he meant carflex, maybe autocorrect?
@@glasshalfempty1984 I honestly don’t think he knows what he meant. Guarantee he won’t respond with what he really meant to say.

Can you explain to my gc why i cant install my lights that i dont have...
What no 4-way switch...lol
I despise pulling through carflex 90's....

In all fairness... You didn't cover " 4-way switches" and how many can go in row
Gr8 Video!
Does cold weather effect voltage?
Wow, that was short!

we call them old work boxes
Great 👍
The chances of ever using a 4 gang old work box is so slim
Thanks for the beard. You look good.
yeh
Those fan-pan box you showed are abosolute garbage...
Me at a job site explaining the new guy 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😅
Yall actually use those plastic boxes?
Ummm...yes? Those are easily the most widely used type of box.
@@glasshalfempty1984 what state you in? Idk why but I just fucking hate plastic boxes. I live in the Chicago suburbs and we mostly use metal.
