I love all these documentaries, newsreels, and U.S. Govt. informational programs from the 1940's, '50's, and '60's. It's how the world looked before it went insane.
This war was started by a false flag attack conducted by the Americans. And not sure how going through a world war, dropping nukes on Japan etc wasn't insane to you. But yeah kids dying their hair blue is so terrifying.
My dad successfully completed the Q course in 1963 and was an assault climber instructor. He went national guard, then taught middle school kids for thirty years. I am very proud of the positive influence he exerted upon our society.
I'm well aware as I graduated in 1966 from "Trade School". (Its where all the juvenile delinquents went). Lot of guys with a single eyebrow, low forehead and knuckles dragging on the floor. A large number of us joined the military at that time. Some marines, some army, some airforce. Most came home some did not, they told some terrifying stories. No killing of civilians, no murders, but bad memories, lots of them.
I spent significant time in & around Vietnam from January 1967 through August 1970. I received some great training both militarily & Culturally, & a decent university education past my Bachelors Degree. The one thing that stands out to me is; we don’t win wars or the confidence of a population by leaving. When we get involved, for whatever reasons, we achieve positive results for all concerned when we stay, not when we leave. Europe, Japan, South Korea, Philippines are significant examples while Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, central & South America are important areas where we should have stayed, but bowed to false assumptions & perceived pressure that was actually based on falsehoods. What is hard to factually argue against is that living in the USA affords about the best opportunities to achieve personal goals & satisfaction, as well as the right to fail.
this should include south west asia (iraq in 2011) as well as central asia (afghanistan in 2021) in that assessment. both of which were abandoned due to an inherent political bias.

Of the 3 million, 1.1 million were said (by the north) to have been military casualties. There were 350,000 military casualties recorded in the south in 1972. The remaining 1.6 million were mostly unarmed civilians. And the overwhelming majority of them died at the hands of your hero. The country suffered a famine in the 1980s while having one of the best (most abundant) rice growing regions in the world (Mekong delta). Yes, that was a vicious crime.
In the 3 1/2 years I was there I cannot count the number of civilians I pulled out of burned up, blown up &/or mutilated scenario’s. Women & kids, old people, I stopped counting after the first six months. It is still the source of too frequent nightmares.

As far as I am aware most if not all the classified documentation from the war was declassified in the late 70's. Its why I can get copies of after action reports on recon missions even on battles and most if not all other operations. There are many accounts of what happened in Laos and Cambodia. Just have to look it up. The CIA and State department archives have numerous files on the subject. You can get info from the freedom of information act if you know exactly what files to look for.
The Aggressors were Soviet and Chinese backed North Vietnam who supplied them with massive logistics and military aid. The PAVN had huge amount of Chinese PLA volunteers who provided manpower and firepower at large PAVN bases in Cambodia and Laos. The problem with the US was the cabal who murdered President Kennedy brought in major conventional US military forces in 1965 when those forces were not needed. Kennedy wanted to only assist South Vietnam with military training, weapons, economic support, and some USAF and USN assets. Ho Chi Minh was becoming impatient with the NLF/Viet Cong as US special forces assistance was paying off. Main Force PAVN troops began to provide major support to the VC. All the US had to do was provide more training and support to ARVN forces, and not to get bogged down in a ground war in Asia as per JFK's policy. LBJ McNamara and the rest of them got themselves in a pickle. The KGB launched a serious campaign of demoralization in American academia by waking up their sleeper agents. Anti war protests started to get bigger and bigger as the US casualty figures mounted seen on the nightly news. The man with the plan for saving South Vietnam was John Paul Vann, but did they listen to him? Nope.
Had to look it up just to be sure. I always thought it was 1 mile by 1/2 mile, but according to Wiki and FAS it was 2 miles by 5/8 mile. The radar bombing system was very accurate up to 50,000 ft at 650 MPH. The B-52D (most used in Vietnam) usually bombed from 20-30,000 ft. Targets were determined by Recon teams (often Special forces) along with radio and language intercepts, as well as airiel photography and ground situation reports (troops inn contact). My brother did targeting while there.
I find it inconsistent that a President can't keep the secret that he's getting hummers from his intern, but you believe hundreds pilots would remain silent for 40 years over mass murder just because a president told them to. I've known too many pilots to even begin to believe that. There would have been hell given for any pilot to even contemplate doing such an act. Who do you think carried out these missions, the American SS? The CIA never flew B-52s, F-4s, A-6s etc.
The US had a team several times in North Vietnam watching the Ho Chi Minh trail where it had to go through steep mountain passes.(Very difficult to reach) These points were prime targets for bombing as the slowed resupply or destroyed trucks. These areas were bombed numerous times by B-52s. No crimes.
There was no targeting of "civilian areas" and much was done to avoid civilian areas. Any heavily bombed civilian areas would have had pictures all over the world within hours of it happening. The NVA loved all the European reporters in the north and would have made it a showcase if so. As it was, they only ever claimed 1200(?) civ deaths during the Christmas bombing of 72. There were 100,000 Iraqis killed during the war, (including insurgents) mostly killed by Shia and Sunni death squads.
@@trieuhuan106 Yes,, there was one errant bomb from a B-52 that went off coarse and hit the hospital. The hospital had been previously evacuated and only doctors and nurses remained. Of those 26 died in the blast.
I found a marine recon "battalions "after action reports list" on the net and started reading the reports. It will take me another six months just to get by 1968 alone. (and these are one page reports) Interesting how they operated. Multiply that by the SEALs, Spec Ops and LRRPS and you get 1000's of missions. As far as I am aware most if not all flights have secondary missions if the first cannot be carried out. Never heard of any bombs dropped for "fun" and murder.

This is awesome. The Rhade people are a stone age mountain men from the South Vietnamese highlands. They were natural warriors and shaved their teeth to points. There are a few other tribes, and were generically called Montanyards. These Special Forces advisors are the guys that taught the guys that taught the SOG guys. The Vietcong treated these people like slaves. The Nung Chinese were some of the SOG teams best fighters also, having fought against the Communists with the French in the 50s
I don't know. I never heard of any recon being killed from bombing. Like I said, my brother spent two years in Thailand targeting bombing locations. It was a large effort collecting the intell required to find targets. His job was to analyse the information and select those that were determined most likely to have a payoff. Such as base camps, supply depots, POL storage areas, truck parks etc. There was never any bombing of areas just for the hell of it. Common sense says it costs too much.
I was in MACVSOG in 68. I was bombed twice. Once a cluster bomb probably targeting a group on a trail near us. Another time we were just inserted and the hill we were on had a bomb dropped. I believe that our locations were unknown to the other branches. We were not hit by either incidents.

Good documentary with the nostalgia of a hope and dream of doing good and this time capsule shows early on what was being done to make Vietnam a free country. Have no idea where you get your numbers from. I believe the total dead from the war on both sides including civilians is estimated around 3 million and the only number given for deaths in the bombing of the north was around 1,600 during Dec ember of 72.
All of it would have been secret at the time. Yes, thousands of missions. Since the late 70's just about everything has been released and is no longer classified. There's any number of books on Special Forces activity that have been written, from SOG, to LRRPs, Marine recon, even Operation Phoenix from many of the people who carried out these missions. POL is Petroleum, Oil, and Lubricants, trucks don't run on rice. Never heard of a quota of missions to fly.
Show me the pictures of the destruction that the US bombing caused in Hanoi, or Haiphong. Surely there must be many many photos if it happened. I have seen many pictures from the bombing of Dresden and the fire bombing of Tokyo, not to mention Shanghai, Berlin, London, and many many more and I doubt they had half the photographers and journalists that the North Vietnamese had. Where are the photos?

First off I wouldn't "murder" innocent villagers. If any were caught in a crossfire I would report it as such. If anyone in my platoon murdered someone I would report it as a murder. If for no other reason that it would be illegal for me not to do so and that there would be numerous witnesses that could testify against me if I did not. Then there is the problem of the other platoon leaders and the company commander who I would have to snooker as well. Nope better to report it as a murder.
As shown in this episode of "The Big Picture," the U.S. Army's Special Forces seem to have done an excellent job in the early 1960s in arming and training the backward, primitive, colored local people of the isolated Central Highland villages in So. Vietnam against marauding Vietnamese Communist guerrillas.

He has been nominated for the Nobel several times for his work. Its available on the net as well citing sources, dates, times, etc. It think the mismanagement of the war falls more on Johnson and MacNamera than Nixon and Kissinger.

No, they are classified at the time because they are dangerous. The US had "Nung" road runners who would dress in NVA uniform carry AK47s be briefed on certain units known to be walking the Ho Chi Min trail and drop them off nearby where they walked miles on the trail and picked up info on truck parks, camps etc. then they would be picked up at a specified point at a certain time. That's very dangerous and very secret. Many such missions. No crimes.

That allowed them to put POWs in forced labour ( just by changing their name ) A hangable crime, by their own definitions. I was just reading about the story of "Apocalypse Now" and how the original story was written 75 years ago and based in Africa. It had nothing to do with Vietnam when it was written. Meh. No doubt the US has had more wars than it should have in the last 30 years. I was never for the war in Iraq nor the "nation building" in Afghanistan. My main focus has always been Vietnam and sometimes the Korean war.

I have my own "Big Picture" for this Big Picture. Look at that picture of the globe near the beginning. Look at where the US is, and where Vietnam is. That's all you need to do. Vietnam is 7500 miles across the entire Pacific Ocean from the US....even farther across the Atlantic & Indian Oceans. The US has natural and strategic barriers and protection from the "Bad Guys" in Europe, Africa and Asia. The US has THE best world-class Navy and Air Force to protect those oceans and airspace as well. Conclusion. The US was totally foolish and abusive committing its armed forces to Vietnam. All that 10 year war did is harm the US in so many ways. It did absolutely NOTHING to preserve American security, safety and freedom. Ok Free falling bombs from 40,000 feet can be off course up to 1/2 mile . And Id say a LOT of recon were killed by them. But they did NOT just select targets. They carpet bombed every free-fire zone . They dropped more tonnage than was dropped in entire WW2. They tried to NOT bomb wherever they thought there may be Russian advisors. After Dresden + Tokyo , Hanoi is the most heavily bombed in history. Every captured pilot was brought through Hanoi so they could see the devastation
Well , They were semi-secretive were they not ? If they taget an area for a B52 and dont run as fast as they can the shock waves will literally turn your brain to mush (reverb). Whats POL ? How many sorties used recon (thousands). Ask your brother - when they couldnt find targets , they bombed the next best thing - villages and farms . They had a set number of sorties to fly - and they had to fly them , and as far as I know , they couldnt return with their payload (partly for fuel)

As a vet, I'm always amazed what these hidden soldiers do.Due to the classification of some of these missions you will never hear about it. NZ.

Had to look it up just to be sure. I always thought it was 1 mile by 1/2 mile, but according to Wiki and FAS it was 2 miles by 5/8 mile. The radar bombing system was very accurate up to 50,000 ft at 650 MPH. The B-52D (most used in Vietnam) usually bombed from 20-30,000 ft. Targets were determined by Recon teams (often Special forces) along with radio and language intercepts, as well as airiel photography and ground situation reports (troops inn contact). My brother did targeting while there.
I find it inconsistent that a President can't keep the secret that he's getting hummers from his intern, but you believe hundreds pilots would remain silent for 40 years over mass murder just because a president told them to. I've known too many pilots to even begin to believe that. There would have been hell given for any pilot to even contemplate doing such an act. Who do you think carried out these missions, the American SS? The CIA never flew B-52s, F-4s, A-6s etc.

The US had a team several times in North Vietnam watching the Ho Chi Minh trail where it had to go through steep mountain passes.(Very difficult to reach) These points were prime targets for bombing as the slowed resupply or destroyed trucks. These areas were bombed numerous times by B-52s. No crimes.
The NVA truck drivers had to be chained to the steering wheel of their trucks, because of the Spooky:s.

There was no targeting of "civilian areas" and much was done to avoid civilian areas. Any heavily bombed civilian areas would have had pictures all over the world within hours of it happening. The NVA loved all the European reporters in the north and would have made it a showcase if so. As it was, they only ever claimed 1200(?) civ deaths during the Christmas bombing of 72. There were 100,000 Iraqis killed during the war, (including insurgents) mostly killed by Shia and Sunni death squads.
Bach Mai hospital was bomb in 1972.
@@trieuhuan106 Yes,, there was one errant bomb from a B-52 that went off coarse and hit the hospital. The hospital had been previously evacuated and only doctors and nurses remained. Of those 26 died in the blast.
I found a marine recon "battalions "after action reports list" on the net and started reading the reports. It will take me another six months just to get by 1968 alone. (and these are one page reports) Interesting how they operated. Multiply that by the SEALs, Spec Ops and LRRPS and you get 1000's of missions. As far as I am aware most if not all flights have secondary missions if the first cannot be carried out. Never heard of any bombs dropped for "fun" and murder.

This is awesome. The Rhade people are a stone age mountain men from the South Vietnamese highlands. They were natural warriors and shaved their teeth to points. There are a few other tribes, and were generically called Montanyards. These Special Forces advisors are the guys that taught the guys that taught the SOG guys. The Vietcong treated these people like slaves. The Nung Chinese were some of the SOG teams best fighters also, having fought against the Communists with the French in the 50s
I don't know. I never heard of any recon being killed from bombing. Like I said, my brother spent two years in Thailand targeting bombing locations. It was a large effort collecting the intell required to find targets. His job was to analyse the information and select those that were determined most likely to have a payoff. Such as base camps, supply depots, POL storage areas, truck parks etc. There was never any bombing of areas just for the hell of it. Common sense says it costs too much.
I was in MACVSOG in 68. I was bombed twice. Once a cluster bomb probably targeting a group on a trail near us. Another time we were just inserted and the hill we were on had a bomb dropped. I believe that our locations were unknown to the other branches. We were not hit by either incidents.

Good documentary with the nostalgia of a hope and dream of doing good and this time capsule shows early on what was being done to make Vietnam a free country. Have no idea where you get your numbers from. I believe the total dead from the war on both sides including civilians is estimated around 3 million and the only number given for deaths in the bombing of the north was around 1,600 during Dec ember of 72.

All of it would have been secret at the time. Yes, thousands of missions. Since the late 70's just about everything has been released and is no longer classified. There's any number of books on Special Forces activity that have been written, from SOG, to LRRPs, Marine recon, even Operation Phoenix from many of the people who carried out these missions. POL is Petroleum, Oil, and Lubricants, trucks don't run on rice. Never heard of a quota of missions to fly.

Show me the pictures of the destruction that the US bombing caused in Hanoi, or Haiphong. Surely there must be many many photos if it happened. I have seen many pictures from the bombing of Dresden and the fire bombing of Tokyo, not to mention Shanghai, Berlin, London, and many many more and I doubt they had half the photographers and journalists that the North Vietnamese had. Where are the photos?

First off I wouldn't "murder" innocent villagers. If any were caught in a crossfire I would report it as such. If anyone in my platoon murdered someone I would report it as a murder. If for no other reason that it would be illegal for me not to do so and that there would be numerous witnesses that could testify against me if I did not. Then there is the problem of the other platoon leaders and the company commander who I would have to snooker as well. Nope better to report it as a murder.

My numbers come from R.J Rummel Prof Emeritus Univ of Hawaii who has made it his lifes work determining deaths in war. His work is often used in citing deaths in Vietnam. He has been nominated for the Nobel several times for his work. Its available on the net as well citing sources, dates, times, etc. It think the mismanagement of the war falls more on Johnson and MacNamera than Nixon and Kissinger.

No, they are classified at the time because they are dangerous. The US had "Nung" road runners who would dress in NVA uniform carry AK47s be briefed on certain units known to be walking the Ho Chi Min trail and drop them off nearby where they walked miles on the trail and picked up info on truck parks, camps etc. then they would be picked up at a specified point at a certain time. That's very dangerous and very secret. Many such missions. No crimes.

I was just reading about the story of "Apocalypse Now" and how the original story was written 75 years ago and based in Africa. It had nothing to do with Vietnam when it was written. Meh. No doubt the US has had more wars than it should have in the last 30 years. I was never for the war in Iraq nor the "nation building" in Afghanistan. My main focus has always been Vietnam and sometimes the Korean war.
uh the movie is definitely about Vietnam, more specifically Laos and Cambodia. its about a man named Tony Poe, and elements of it are absolutely real and based on fact.

I have my own "Big Picture" for this Big Picture. Look at that picture of the globe near the beginning. Look at where the US is, and where Vietnam is. That's all you need to do. Vietnam is 7500 miles across the entire Pacific Ocean from the US....even farther across the Atlantic & Indian Oceans. The US has natural and strategic barriers and protection from the "Bad Guys" in Europe, Africa and Asia. The US has THE best world-class Navy and Air Force to protect those oceans and airspace as well.
Conclusion. The US was totally foolish and abusive committing its armed forces to Vietnam. All that 10 year war did is harm the US in so many ways. It did absolutely NOTHING to preserve American security, safety and freedom. The US Government AND the men who obeyed it were ignorant and stupid on the highest order.

@@topgeardel i remember the last days in vietnam especially the helicopters airlifting those who wanted to flee the oppression of the communists and recall the misgivings about those actions. had older cousins and young uncles who served in vietnam as well as older uncles who served in korea and a great uncle who served at the tail end of world war two. i did serve for over two decades before retiring and am glad to say that i did SOME GOOD in this world. can you say as much?

In August 1975, American forces pulled out of Vietnam. Less than 6 hours later, on the very same 24 hour time period, the North Vietnamese Army came in to Saigon with their tanks and their soldiers and their transport vehicles. The day Americans got out of there, that was the day the war ended.
