Please don't call it an industry! This is simply reinforcing a major misunderstanding of the nature of farming. Just because farmers have to valence the books does not make it a corporation.
The guy is saying that it is to close a loop hole for investers buying up farm lands and evading inheritance tax but it could ironically lead to British farmers selling up their farm lands and encouraging the acquisition of British farmland by foreign companies with large capital. This would decimate the domestic farming industry forever.
181,701 titles are now registered to individuals with an overseas address, 0.7% of all titles. This number has more than doubled since 2010, when it was 0.25% of England & Wales. "While fewer than 10% of deals with UK companies involved a foreign investor in the first half of 2024, these made up 60% of the total invested." 🥳 Monopoly anyone?

Remember while the tax can be paid over 10 years THAT IS PAID OUT OF AFTER-TAX INCOME. And farmers only get a 1.5% return on capital. A bonkers idea by Reeves.
Labour said they have a black hole that needs filling now... right now !... But yet these farmers have 10 years to pay the tax. So this looks more like a longer term land grab rather than a sudden boost of cash to fill that black hole. Maybe Labour are hoping the farmers will just say oh sod it and sell up early and put their land up for sale so bigger companies can buy it. Maybe even house building companies could buy it !... Because we all know how big the housing shortage is and why we have one !
They want to close farms, the EU has mandated it. In Holland and Germany they used the direct approach and that destroyed the governments. Labour is doing it in an indirect method and hopes no one notices.
We work our whole lives, paying tax on every penny we earn and spend... Inheritance tax is theft, and it's long overdue due being abolished for all, not just the king.
If my father works his entire life, he pays income tax, he pays tax on all the goods and services he purchases. He also pays rates for the property he purchases. He spends his lifetime working and accumulating assets and property all of which he has paid tax for along the way. Then when he passes on they say they will tax 40% of all of that stuff to be passed on to his decendants. I am currently reading through the conditions and payment conditions but I cannot for the life of me understand how some people think this is fair. So my father who worked his ass of to pass on generational wealth to his family will have that cut nearly in half by the government. The wealthy families of this world will not pay this tax because they have figured out exactly how to bypass these tax laws through means of trusts and business entities in which they can house this wealth and shelter it from these tax obligations. Farmers are asset rich in their land holding but generally cash poor. Farming margins are tight. Inheriting the family farm from your father and then being stuck with a massive bill to pay off over a decade is a kick in the guts and a slap in the face. I hope more people wake up and push back on this. Uncle government wants to take take take. He is not your friend. This sounds exactly like “you will own nothing and be happy”.

What a shame. I feel so sorry for this family. Let’s hope Terry transfers the farm and can keep going another 7 years. However to be fully compliant I think Terry would have to move away from the farm and receive no benefit from it.
A lot of farms are multigenerational businesses, not a tax dodge investment for the super wealthy. The inclusion of these people into inheritance tax is worse than simple idiocy.

Ex farmers son myself and i stand by the farming industry. We are governed by woeful clueless people not fit for office.
Looks like it is already happening. 10 - 20,000 titles a year being sold off to foreign investors every year. We are being robbed blind.
"While fewer than 10% of deals with UK companies involved a foreign investor in the first half of 2024, these made up 60% of the total invested." 🥳 Monopoly anyone?
if that was the case then tax foreign owned farms.

Undoing 14 years of Tory spending and mis-management is not a pretty task for anyone. There will be losers. Once the books are balanced then we can only hope for a brighter future...The Tory way of brush everything under the carpet doesn´t work anymore. If there was a magic wand, it would have been used years ago. These attacks from the right within the first year are farcical....The Tories can just keep quiet as they caused the mess and Reform are only vocal in order to stay relevant but have zero policy and even if they did have a policy, it makes no difference if they are never in power to use them.

We need hospitals, what a joke. We need healthy food to eat. This will prevent people from going to hospital in the first place. Our food industry needs to start providing actual real edible food. Doctors need to learn about nutrition not pharmaceutical drugs with 100s of side effects of which they don’t have a clue. Healthy food to eat, healthy water supply and exercise it’s that simple. People will always become I’ll but the three things I’ve just mentioned should be the go to for the best results to human health

Remember while the tax can be paid over 10 years THAT IS PAID OUT OF AFTER-TAX INCOME. And farmers only get a 1.5% return on capital. A bonkers idea by Reeves.
Farmers should really learn to be better at business.

@ You really haven’t a clue about farming economics ( rules and regulations that apply in the UK ) with that comment
The labour voters must be proud
They want to close farms, the EU has mandated it. In Holland and Germany they used the direct approach and that destroyed the governments. Labour is doing it in an indirect method and hopes no one notices.
We work our whole lives, paying tax on every penny we earn and spend... Inheritance tax is theft, and it's long overdue due being abolished for all, not just the king.
You should have voted Tory.
There should be NO inheritance tax....
I agree. How would you make up the £9bn shortfall its likely to raise this year. What taxes would you increase ?
You miss the point: Reeves thinks that intergenerational wealth is immoral.
