  • Fun facts for kids about Iguanodon - one of the first dinosaurs discovered.
In this episode of Dino Park with Daddy Donut we learn that the dinosaur known as Iguanodon was found by Gideon and Mary Mantell in 1822. At the time, noone knew anything about dinosaurs. The finding, putting together and describing of Iguanodon (Iguana Tooth) was an important event in the early history of dinosaur discoveries.
Some may argue that Megalosaurus was the first dinosaur (so to speak). It was certainly the first dinosaur given a scientific name (by William Buckland in 1824), but it seems Mantell found his Iguanodon tooth in 1818. That same year Georges Cuvier (called 'The Father of paleontology') concluded that the bones discovered by Buckland must belong to a giant lizard-like creature. They were on to something! Perhaps it's not that important who found what first but I find the Iguanodon story fascinating, and thus more memorable.
In this episode of Dino Park we find a poor little Iguanodon being attacked by a pack of carnivourous deinonychus... but wait... no... they are not really attacking... they are DANCING... on Iguanodon.
    Enjoy!
