Thank you for your insight. I've always been a huge fan of Ivy from the beginning, but I'm incredibly biased because I've seen Megan perform live in Wicked and have met her in person, and she's a truly amazing person, and her voice is incomparable. You have to overcome your biases however, and really consider the character. Ivy is so deep and complicated - no one is perfect, and she is truly flawed, but aren't all great characters? I think Ivy will rise above everything and prove herself.

Megan Hilty gives a mesmerizing performance. As a singer and as an actress. She should be nominated for Emmy/Golden Globe.
If you watch the show closely, there're many times Julia stressed that Karen was a good dancer, and Derek said she surely was trained. If Ivy can dance better then the producers should mention that. Also, Karen didn't just gossip with Dev. I remember there were only 2 times she had "phone issue". One is when Dev was waiting for her in the restaurant, the other was when they just had a huge fight. Both time were understandable imo.
I don't know how people don't understand that Megan is just a better Marilyn than Katherine. Just like Katherine plays the part in Hit List a million times better than Megan could. It all depends on their type. I don't even think Katherine McPhee would be considered for Marilyn in the real world if she wasn't already famous
That time Karen was thrown on something very difficult and stressful, she needed to know that Dev was by her side. She needed support from him so that she could do the part. And again, that call cost less than half a minute, and she was totally wonderful at that premiere.

Also, I can't let the "if she'd were to actually try" comment fly for two reasons: 1) I have never seen Ivy not try. She's always put everything she had into her role as Marilyn and she was so determined to pull through that she went on powerful drugs, knowing that they wouldn't be good for her. She also had the sense to learn the songs and 2) KAREN DOES NOT TRY. If she were trying, she'd be taking dance classes, bring a pencil to rehearsal and stay off her damned phone while she's at a gig.

I think Karen is pure and kind-hearted because she turned down Derek's offer, she never wanted to hurt anybody. She know how to put away the conflict and bring Ivy's glasses back while Ivy just threw hers away. You can think she's so stupid to do that but I appreciate and really rate that.
see i been trying to explain to my friend that Ivy has been waiting for this moment for 10 years. i know how it feels to be in the background .. or to be a non singing role. its really hard, when you can do everything the leads can do and probably even better. i really love Ivy and this song was wirrten to be sung by her :)

Though I'm a big Karen fan I can't help but feel for Ivy.As a person still trying to make their artistic dreams come true, I understand the desperation she feels.I also understand the resentment toward a person like Karen who seems to get such big opportunities easily(I used to get so jealous of Paolini and Stephanie Meyer). This song is Ivy because it talks about something that can still make beautiful art/music despite the perception it is worn out and too old just like Ivy.

I don't know where you get pure and kindhearted from Karen unless you're confusing pure with stupid and kind-hearted with self-righteous. What makes you think the girl who flirted with her director in his apartment then rubbed it in Ivy's face after she'd already been booted, went behind the creative team's back, and threw a rehearsal away to have a tantrum is pure and kindhearted?
I wouldn't say she's too old... She's actually very young still. She's simply been in the industry longer, has given everything into every role she's ever done even though she's only ever been in the chorus. She resents Karen because Karen is so new to the industry and has been given every opportunity that Ivy deserves. Although it's kind of ironic, considering Megan is the opposite. Straight out of university she got the understudy role in Wicked and soon after, the lead as Glinda.

Ivy underperformed at the workshop as far as I remember, part of reasons why they hired Rebecca. And Ivy isn't that physically perfect for Marilyn; she fatter and has no innocent look. Oh and you said Ivy was sincere? She slept with Derek before anyone pissed her off, she slept with Dev when she and Karen were having friendly relationship. Her talent, drive and dedication for the role are reasons why I also like Ivy and wish for Ivy, Karen's friendship to grow.

Why? She deserves the role in her own right. She may be a pseudo-villain, or an antagonist if you will, but if you really understood the depths and complications of her character, you wouldn't hate her so much.

And about Karen and Ivy's dancing, I don't just base on Julia and Derek's opinions, mostly I base on my opinion, Julia and Derek's words are only proof I want to show you. And Derek said she was trained right after Julia gave compliment about Karen's dancing in ep 2, you better check it again. The producers I was talking about are one that do "Smash". If they want to build Ivy as a better dancer, they should show us Ivy's dance because I don't see it very often.
If you focus just on the song it's amazing. Ivy is a manipulator but you do have to give her credit for fighting for what she wants. It's obviously very cut throat and she's trying to live up to her mothers shadow. This song redeems her a bit though she is the better signer and puts true emotion into it. You feel like she relates and is saying I've still got something. I was mesmerized. Now Kat McPhee on some other songs is better the Megan but this one goes to the blonde!
Karen didn't stab Tom and Julia's backs. She didn't really know what that Touch me song was for stealing their musical. She only got involved with it because it was related to some Marilyn things that Derek had. If Derek asked Ivy to do it I believe she would have done too. Karen also wanted to play Marilyn and she took her chance. Only people who didn't know the whole story like Ivy would blame her for that.

After ten years of being in the chorus, she thinks she deserves her time and doesn't want it taken away from her by a passive little upstart. Karen is not the better singer. If she were, they'd let more of her actual voice come through.
Her character has been through a lot, and has made some bad decisions, but I prefer to think of her as misunderstood. She's cut-throat, she's intense, she knows what she wants and she's going to do everything in her power to get it. She herself is secondhand and broken, but dammit if she doesn't have something beautiful to give. :) That's just my opinion of her.

Both girls are good, and there are songs from bombshell one girl sings better than the other, but that is up to the listener. If you hear both girls sing the song, its easy to decide, but if you only hear one, you cant truely imagine the other singing it. For example, I cant imagine ivy singing broadway here I come, but I also cant imagine karen singing lets be bad, but with dont forget me, you have the choice.
she did was waste time on the phone. On a related note, I have no problem texting during some down time in rehearsal, but her having to go on may not have been such a mad dash if she had spent some of that downtime trying to learn the part she was responsible for.
In my opnion. After watching the series twice through. My first opinion was I didn't really like Ivy and I did like Karen. but after watching it again my view has changed. Ivy is just fighting for her dream. and anyone in her shows who could get the lead role in a broadway musical may do the same. shes actually nice but is trying to live up to her mother. but Karen ends up throwing everything in dev's face. saying she doesn't really care because shes on "broadway" at least ivy cared for derek.
Ok this is my opinion. If you look through all the songs by Karen and Ivy, you'll see that Ivy rarely dances and Karen is such a good dancer. The pencil thing is Karen's fault I agree. And Karen's issue with the phone is because Dev was the love of her life; can't blame her.
Anyways I agree that Ivy seemed to want this role more badly than Karen. Karen in her conversation with Rebecca in ep 14 said it herself. If I hadn't been Katharine's fan before the show maybe I would be in Ivy's team now.
Yes, Karen is nice and an amazing singer. Yes, Ivy plays dirty. But its performances like this that have me convinced Ivy should be Marilyn

There are many reasons why I prefer Karen. I like Katharine so I defo like Karen's look and voice. Karen's character is also very likable in my opinion, pure and kind-hearted. I know there are people preferring someone with characteristics like Ivy and I respect that, I'm just not that way. The reason why I said I would be in Ivy's team.... is because I also like Ivy for her talent and I want to show that I respect Ivy for always trying her best. I didn't really mean that Ivy is more likable.

If you remember correctly, Derek says Karen is trained before he sees her dance. He's taking about her singing. In any case, Julia spent half the season riding Michael Swift and Derek tried to turn the musical into a techno rave show, so I'm not too big on their judgement. Are you basing your opinion on what they've said over what you've seen? Showing always has more value than telling. I don't know what producers youre talking about.
If by "Ivy rarely dances", you mean we rarely see it, that's hardly surprising considering the most we see of her performing as Marilyn is before the show is completed. I don't know why you bring that up, though. Based on your next assertion, I'll assume it's in defense of Karen's not bothering to go to class? If so, that's no excuse. Anna Pavlova (who was SUCH a good dancer) understood the value of class. It's conceited and foolish to expect to make it in musical theatre without dance training.
And just in case I ever misunderstand your idea about Karen's phone issue, I also want you to know that Karen was in the chorus most of the time, she had free time for texting without affecting the show, then why complaining?

Do you spend your time that you're supposed to be working gossiping (with "the love of your life" or anyone else) about taking someone else's job instead of doing yours? Does she not LIVE with that person and have access to him in a few hours? Bullshit. I blame her for her bullshit. This also reminds me of when she was supposed to be working at the restaurant and she was being spoonfed by "the love of her life" instead of doing her job.
I had to watch that scene over cause I didn't notice. Yeah Karen was like 3s late and you call her irresponsible. What she did didn't annoy anyone but you I guess. And Ivy messed up at Heaven on Earth, do you think that's irresponsible? If yes, then you can't hate Karen for this. Unless you think that the professional have right to mess up when they're upset
You have to put in perspective. You work a decade in a business where you have to prove yourself over and over again. Then you're close to having your moment in the spotlight when some chick out of nowhere is almost about to take over what you've worked for. Obviously, you're gonna try to beat the absolute shit ( theoretically speaking) of her to stay in the spotlight. Believe me, I've seen it and it's not fun. So I do see why people hate Ivy, but you have to put yourself in her shoes.

There is no reason t prefer someone wh would've been typed out before the creative team finished their morning coffee over someone who's physically perfect for and excelled in the role in question. Voice, though weaker than Ivy's, doesn't matter as much because Marilyn doesn't have a particular voice type. Ivy's characteristics are talent and drive and dedication and sincerity. Are you not that way? She's also cunning and desperate after getting pissed on so much.

Karen didn't flirt with Derek for god's sake! Derek implied to her to sleep with him for the role. Karen didn't want that and she only did the most literate part in his words was to act Some like it hot for him. Karen told that to Ivy just after Ivy yelled at her and said she was nothing special. If Karen just had listened to Ivy yelling at her and endured then you can say she was stupid.

Nope. Karen is a threat because, despite the fact that her voice lacks the vibrance of Ivy's, she apparently knows nothing about how theatre works and she lacks the basics of a professional actress, people seem to love her. You clearly know nothing about the life of a professional musical actress if you think extensive time in ensemble means a lack of effort. Do you know how many years Sutton Foster was in ensemble before she "made something of herself"?

She's an incredible singer, are you kidding?!! I don't know if it was intended, but her character has turned out to be so much more interesting than Katherine McPhee's. Katherine McPhee is beautiful and has a lovely voice, but she's not a Broadway singer and next to Megan Hilty she seems so blah.
Ivy is mean, but she is too talented for me to hate.
Re: the last part of your opinion: I was Katherine's fan before the show. She's a terrible actress playing an undeserving character. Are you unable to separate the actress from the character? Are you rooting for "Katherine" as opposed to "Karen"?

Ivy obviously thinks Karen is a better singer or she wouldn't feel so threatened. If she were to actually try instead of get mad at everyone else when she screws up she might have made something of herself in the 10 years she was in the chorus. She messes up and lets it affect out she behaves which ruins her performance.

Ah I hate Ivy's character so much.
I don't like her as a character. Karen is nice and naive but she would never go out of her way to purposefully not somebody down. She was fine being in the ensemble when Ivy had the role of Marilyn just because she wanted to be a part of the production. Ivy can't be happy unless she's the center of everyone's attention. She manipulates people because she is annoyingly insecure. Plus, I think Karen's the better singer even if Ivy's more "broadway".
Ivy is the worst. The fact that she and that despicable Ellis (and no, SMASH "writers" I don't "love to hate" him; I just hate him) have joined forces she is officially "dead" to me. Also, I really don't think she is that great of a singer but, of course, these things are subjective so, c'est la vie!
