One thing you forgot to mention is Eladio's real reason not to support Hector's ice cream business. He was afraid they would start calling him "Don Helado"
It's pretty amazing that Don Eladio managed to stay alive as a boss for 20+ years... I like to think of it as Gus secretly looking out for the Don, taking care of the Don's enemies covertly just so Gus can have the pleasure of killing the Don himself.
Look up Ismaels Zambadas' biograophy. He has been the co leader of the Sinaloa cartel for about 30 years, the other leader was El Chapo Guzmán who is currently in prision, the difference is the life style they had I guess, one has always been a queit man while the other one was very extravagant.
Not surprising as he seemed to have a mixture of ruthlessness but charisma and I'm guessing he was in a better position than the Salamancas from the jump so they knew they couldn't play with him. Even Gus knew better as if he got killed too early a probably more ruthless leader would have stepped up making it worse.

he was really menacing in his first scene in BB, that's maybe my favorite scene from the show. Also I didn't realize until now that don Eladio is actually Manny from scarface lol. He killed it in BB.
the fact that Hector Salamanca is also in Scarface and that in one of the episode of breaking bad it shows walter and walter jr watching Scarface together has blown the hell out of my mind
Eladio may not get much screen time, but his quote when talking to Walt Jr., “What is this? Some kind of Breaking Bad? I don’t know what you had for breakfast, but you Better Call Saul, cus it’s Eladioding time!” might as well be synonymous with the series itself. People who haven’t even seen the show know the line
Yup. He doesn’t need to on screen that often since we know that he’s offscreen fondling finger and turning Skinny Pete into Rich Schweikart which is the real moment that Werner Ziegler becomes Patrick Kuby.
I think it was mentioned at some point that Eladio wasn't living the pimp life cause he liked it. But because that house was the safest place to be. The women and drinks were necessary so he wouldn't be bored.
You missed one major point: His name is Eladio, which translates to "man from Greece". So instead of all the Zeus references, it is likely that the character is simply of Greek origin.
5:20 It's mentioned here. The accurate spelling to it is Elladio with double l, but It could make sense to reveal his origin as there 's not such a name in Spanish! Historically many Greeks travelled to Latin America, to escape war and ethnik crises. We can assume some of rhem didn' t choose a lawful career...
The most frightening part of better call Saul was definitely when hector said don bolsa, show me your bolsack or get ready to get sauled. Truly inspiring and frightening film.
Don Eladio's activities: In BCS and BB 1.)Collecting packages of money from subordinates 2.)Swimming in his pool 3.)Smiling, Laughing and making lame jokes 4.)Drinking the Most expensive Tequilas and chomping on the Most expensive Cuban cigars 5.)and Re-asserting his Authority over his subordinates (e.g., Gus, Don Bolsa, & Don Hector) 6.)Collecting MORE of those packages of money and gifts from his subordinates..........7.) and Off-screen: Sexing beautiful YOUNG women in the pool and by the pool.
It very much reads like the first act of Goodfellas, seeing the made guys and bosses living the high life with a fearsome reputation , others lower in the business are the ones actually getting their hands dirty these days though , similar to the story of the main characters in Goodfellas coming up in the organisation.
Don Eladio Vuente is only one letter from the name of the character Eladio Buente played by Raymond Cruz ( aka Tuco Salamanca of BB and BCS) in the X Files episode "El Mundo Gira." Gilligan, of course, worked years on the X files.
Eladio is an important character, but writers wants to keep mistery about Eladio and Gus's past. In a way it makes everything more fascinating. But on the other hand, i wish i could really know what's behind Gus and how Eladio started this huge cartel. We will never know...
@@supperdopplereffect 100% will not happen. Gilligan has ended with BB universe, after 15 long years of work on it. Don't wish there will be something else, bc there won't!
@@supperdopplereffect Nah, they'd ruin everything about Gus. Not saying it'd be bad but we really don't need to see it, we've already been given enough clues to piece a couple of theories together while still keeping it vague enough to preserve Gus' mystique.

@@jimjaspers2804 It wasn't a huge role in Scarface, but it made a big impression on me, and I've noticed that actor in everything I've seen him in, since. After Scarface, I realized how prolific an actor Mark Margolis is. He's almost typecast, but he's been a good guy in a few shows.
I saw the movie in the theater when it came out. Funny thing is that it was almost empty. The movie didn't get popular till a few years later on video rental.
yeah but the one drawback he had and its impressive he still was a menace is that we know that somehow someway he has been neutralized by breaking bad frings takeover long game playing out flawlessly...but its a testament to the writers to still make us doubt fring will make it lol
Wow, amazing analysis. Raymond Cruz was excellent too, they wanted more of his character but it took so much out of him to play such an intense role. It's exactly like you said, less is more. Quality > quantity The writing and acting in this series is very deep and captivating, I don't think I'll ever get tired of it. So much content too, as much as I love both BB and BCS, plus the movie, I've only managed to watch them all twice.
His name is Don Eladio cuz he was part greek. Eladio is similar to Elada (hellas) which means Greece in Greek. Also the restaurant of hector "el griego cuñador" The greek cook. There are many greek characters in the show and it makes sense cuz one of the writers is greek
Those hills in the background of Don Eladio's villa would be the perfect spot for surveillance or even a sniper to take advantage of. Just check out 3:26 and see how many places someone could hide up there.
Steven Baurer was so good in this role, and he's aged well. He's big, but not fat - beefy and it looks like he could still snap a neck or two. Great performance (per usual with BB and BCS).
I loved this dude. Great actor. Make no mistake, I also loved when they KILLED HIS ASS (spoiler alert btw). The look in his face, though! He knew Gus was cunning sneaky - he knew he was poisoned immediately.
A period origin story of Don Eladio's coming up would be the ultimate Breaking Bad spin off. Something like Cidade de Deus. How he came from favella streets of poverty and worked his way up - would be badass.
Just realized this was the guy from scar face holy moley 🤯I subbed wow this rocked my whole day. I literally took 40minutes of my day to ponder life after this thumbnail holy Moley. How did I not realize this after binging this whole series 10x and counting wow
I had no idea that was him in Scarface. I never put 2&2 together He still a don! But I remember hector in Scarface when he made his first appearance on BB.
Steven Bauer is an incredibly talented actor, and he sure stole the show in every scene he appeared in both shows. If the AMCs request of a third spin off is approved, I think a spin off series with a young don Eladio, Gus and Hector Salamanca would be the best bet, with younger up and coming actors playing them. Perhaps with Giancarlo doing a narrating voice over the course of the series. Seeing as they are approximately 50-60 years old at the time of their death, there is a lot of history with them to explore.
Always remember fellas Don Eladio learned from the best when he was a young man. His government name was Manolo and he was second in charge to Antonio Montana. The biggest cocaine drug lord in US history. After Tony's demise Manolo moved to Mexico and changed his name to Donald.
The death scene of Don Elodio has been absolutely captivating, leaving me in awe every time I watch it. I've been thoroughly entranced by the music surrounding it, and have found myself watching it countless times.
As much as Eladio was a powerful cartel don, I think the reason he was able to remain in power for a long time was because the Salamanca family provided the muscle. Lalo mentioned to Gus that while Gus had trucks to deliver the goods, it was the Salamancas who provided the protection. The Twins alone could have easily wiped out Eladio and his gang if Hector wanted to. The thing is everyone was blended into the system and they were making good money so all was fine, until Gus and Hector got into a little private feud. That was where everything came crashing down.
I'm a huge fan of Breaking Bad and better call Saul, and I have seen both series all the way through multiple times, except for season 6 of better call Saul of course, and I've seen Scarface multiple times throughout my life as well, so I'm going to sound stupid when I say this.. but I didn't realize that the actor that played Manny from Scarface also plays Don eladio! From the very first time I ever saw Breaking Bad / the Don, I knew there was something about him that was very familiar that I just couldn't quite figure out.. it was his face, and especially his voice is what stuck out to me, and so now just seeing the thumbnail made it click!
Fr I've seen Scarface as well multiple times and Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul are my 2 fav shows of all time and I've seen them multiple times and even I never the guy who played Don Eladio also played Manny Ribera from Scarface I think the reason is because Steven Bauer was very skinny in Scarface but in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul his put on alot of weight his fat asf presumably because of old age
@@Arthur_John-Goated hell, I think he still looks pretty damn good for his age though! It's funny you mention the weight gain, since he mentions "being chubby" in BCS (I think?) Where Hector (pre " shopping cart" era Hector) brings him the satchel of rolled up bills, and tells Eladio they named the front after him, and they give him the bobble head of the little Greek lol
The biggest mystery to me was why Hector never tried to kill the Don himself. Everything was there Hector would be defiant against orders he given. Hector said his family was the reason Don lived in his mansion but was ignored. Hector felt don's decisions could hurt the business and put everything including his family in jeopardy. Considering all these things idk why Hector did not take actions to take over as he never even seemed to fear or respect Eladio even proclaiming himself as the cartel.
I think that would have everything to do with the rest of the Cartel? The Juarez Cartel was fár bigger then just the Salamanca's. Hector was mostly trying to operate on a line from Juarez to Albequerqey, yet the Cartel was smuggling coke, al lthe way from Columbia, which means they had a lót more branches. Hector would be far too ruthless and savage to be a Cartel Overlord like Eladio. Hector would quickly have his own Dons go against him, the way Hector handled things.
@@thegreenreaper6660 This. Even his nephew, Lalo Salamanca, chose to remain semi-independent before the event of BCS because their ways of conducting business were different.
He was as well a cartel boss in Queen of the South. He played El Santo, a Bolivian Cartel boss and is only in a couple of episodes here as well. Must watch
"El Santo" wasnt that far off from Don Eladio imho... Ok Eladio was residing in an extremely luxurious hacienda. where El Santo was hidden away in the deep jungles of Bolivia. El Santo 'only dealt in Metric Tonnes'. which means íf he sold his high-purity product, he was sure that his buyers were serious enough to not only come up with that kind of money, but also powerful enough to get that stuff through! .. Small detail, but very important about the intelligence of El Santo.
They killed Max because he and Gus were lovers - and the Mexican Cartel wouldn't be seen doing business with them - so one of them had to go. And Gus was more valuable in Eladio's mind. He ended up basically choosing his own killer.
I would love the explanation of Salamancas. They all seem to have amazing cooking skills then why not LET'S COOK WITH SALAMANCA every week on amc starring Tuco Salamanca and Lalo Salamanca hosted by Salamanca brothers. Judge could be hector Salamanca if he likes he dings else he won't. Special appearances by 99.9% pure cook walter white and jesse pinkman. And even better if they introduce ADVENTURES OF BADGER AND SKINNY PETE. That would be a sick series.
If only the Salamanca's opened a restaurant chain, and there'd be a healthy rivalry between Los Pollos Hermanos & The Salamanca's restaurant instead of a cartel bloodbath resulting in the death of every cartel member.
Now that I see the scenes with Gaff, I feel he was underused in BB. That handsome young dude sitting at Gus's table like "I am the Cartel" really shone bright. It was such a promising scene, and I really had the feeling even Gus doesn't grasp who he's messing with. Something bigger than Eladio even. That sort of bravery was only second to Lalo. Not gonna lie, I was disappointed when Gaff was killed by Mike without doing anything important anymore.
@@Zack29810 I was a bit upset that they completely ditched Gus and the cartel after the meeting with Eladio. I was hoping there'd be a scene where Gus and Mike are talking in the Pollos Hermanos office about the Cartel closing in because Walt and Jessie were drawing too much attention. Then, you'd see Gus's laptop showing Walt doing one of his speeches or flicking off the camera in the lab when neither of them were paying attention.
Despite the fact that the Juárez Cartel being un control of New Mexico territory, I like the fact that Vince never explicitly says that the cartel is that of Juárez, but esther just the cartel, making it ambiguous since it's all fictional, not just any narcoseries.

It would have been awesome if Al Pacino had a cameo as the ultimate Cartel Boss, even higher than Eladio or even Eladio's predecessor before retiring, as a nod to the influence Scarface clearly had on Breaking Bad.
I loved how his first appearance in Batter Call Saul mirrors the way he falled dead in his pool in Breaking Bad. I always thought he was kind of dumb. Intimidating, but not too smart
Fun fact: Eladio is of latin/spanish origin. It translates to "Hellene", which is another word for "Greek". Hence why his nickname in the francise is "The winking Greek".
For what I know the Salamanca is the first true head family. Eladio out game them and all the cartel except Gus, Fring planned his revange for 20 years.
Gus is a former general of Pinochet who fled when his regime was toppled. The Cartel killed his boyfriend and he wanted revenge. He was deadly and the cartel were children to him. They even call him 'general', he was a murderer and torturer for Pinochet.
Zeus can also be tied to the McGill brothers. Jimmy told Howard he is powerful as if lightning shoots through his fingers. And Chuck pretty much felt like electricity shoots through hos own fingers whrn touching anything electrical.
The ice cream reference is pretty funny because of the great scene in Scarface where Manny chats up the beautiful lady with his big move after Tony asks one over for an ice cream. Lethbian !
The reason Eladio got sick of Hector was because he put his feud with Gus over making money. And after Hector's stroke he basically became useless to the cartel beyond having the cousins as muscle.

i was looking for a comment like this one.
he was really menacing in his first scene in BB, that's maybe my favorite scene from the show. Also I didn't realize until now that don Eladio is actually Manny from scarface lol. He killed it in BB.
the fact that Hector Salamanca is also in Scarface and that in one of the episode of breaking bad it shows walter and walter jr watching Scarface together has blown the hell out of my mind
Tuco’s Abuelita is also Tony Montana’s mother.

Isn't it Έλληνας basically for Greek man?
@@ChrisLee-yr7tz Yes my man is from Greece. Greeks we are 15 million people or so worldwide and we are literally everywhere.
In Greek it would have been Ελλάδιος, which is pronounced Helladios, simplified as Eladio.
Or maybe his parents named him a rare name. I know a Colombian named Yoshi but he is not part Japanese or Asian. 🙄
The most frightening part of better call Saul was definitely when hector said don bolsa, show me your bolsack or get ready to get sauled. Truly inspiring and frightening film.
Don Eladio's activities: In BCS and BB
1.)Collecting packages of money from subordinates 2.)Swimming in his pool 3.)Smiling, Laughing and making lame jokes 4.)Drinking the Most expensive Tequilas and chomping on the Most expensive Cuban cigars 5.)and Re-asserting his Authority over his subordinates (e.g., Gus, Don Bolsa, & Don Hector) 6.)Collecting MORE of those packages of money and gifts from his subordinates..........7.) and Off-screen: Sexing beautiful YOUNG women in the pool and by the pool.
It very much reads like the first act of Goodfellas, seeing the made guys and bosses living the high life with a fearsome reputation , others lower in the business are the ones actually getting their hands dirty these days though , similar to the story of the main characters in Goodfellas coming up in the organisation.
Eating cigars is just an awesome power move

Steven Bauer also played Carlos Ayala, associate of the Tijuana Cartel on the San Diego side in the movie TRAFFIC (2000). One of my favorite movies.
His name is Don Eladio cuz he was part greek. Eladio is similar to Elada (hellas) which means Greece in Greek. Also the restaurant of hector "el griego cuñador" The greek cook.
There are many greek characters in the show and it makes sense cuz one of the writers is greek
"El griego cuñador" means "The Winking Greek."
*Guiñador, not cuñador.
Also john cena is albanian
Those hills in the background of Don Eladio's villa would be the perfect spot for surveillance or even a sniper to take advantage of.

Steven Baurer was so good in this role, and he's aged well. He's big, but not fat - beefy and it looks like he could still snap a neck or two. Great performance (per usual with BB and BCS).
Wow, haven't seen this guy since Scarface. He had some quite memorable scenes with Tony Montana
Pablo Acosta Villarreal worked for the Guadalajara Cartel, the one who founded the Juárez Cartel by Amado Carrillo Fuente.
I loved this dude. Great actor. Make no mistake, I also loved when they KILLED HIS ASS (spoiler alert btw). The look in his face, though! He knew Gus was cunning sneaky - he knew he was poisoned immediately.
if you ever need a fun challenge in a game, take the "don eladio challenge"
it's very simple, if there is a pool in the game, you must never leave it
A period origin story of Don Eladio's coming up would be the ultimate Breaking Bad spin off. Something like Cidade de Deus. How he came from favella streets of poverty and worked his way up - would be badass.
I agree but it would also have to be in Spanish like a Narcos vibe
Just realized this was the guy from scar face holy moley 🤯I subbed wow this rocked my whole day. I literally took 40minutes of my day to ponder life after this thumbnail holy Moley. How did I not realize this after binging this whole series 10x and counting wow
I had no idea that was him in Scarface. I never put 2&2 together
He still a don!
But I remember hector in Scarface when he made his first appearance on BB.
Don Eladio is literally and figuratively the baby in the pool on the Nirvana album cover.
It will end up like many saints of newark

Always remember fellas Don Eladio learned from the best when he was a young man. His government name was Manolo and he was second in charge to Antonio Montana. The biggest cocaine drug lord in US history. After Tony's demise Manolo moved to Mexico and changed his name to Donald.
Eladio: It's not personal, it's business. Something Gus should have adopted.
We need a Don Eladio prequel. I'd love to see how he came to power.
I’m not sure what’s more amazing, that he survived being shot by Tony, and changed his name, or that he looks younger when he drank the poy-son.
the winking greek refers to eladio's chain that he wears. In Greek culture the eye on his chain is said to ward off evil spirit and misfortune.
They killed Max because he and Gus were lovers - and the Mexican Cartel wouldn't be seen doing business with them - so one of them had to go. And Gus was more valuable in Eladio's mind. He ended up basically choosing his own killer.

If only the Salamanca's opened a restaurant chain, and there'd be a healthy rivalry between Los Pollos Hermanos & The Salamanca's restaurant instead of a cartel bloodbath resulting in the death of every cartel member.
He went from scar faces best friend to the big boss himself
One small thing, the Don being called Winking Greek might be due to the fact that Eladio is derived from the Greek name for their country, Ellada

Eladio kept them at each others' throats to stay on top for a long time.
Hector did 17 yrs in san quentin, i wouldn't doubt if eladio had him set up n took over.
Gus is a former general of Pinochet who fled when his regime was toppled. The Cartel killed his boyfriend and he wanted revenge. He was deadly and the cartel were children to him. They even call him 'general', he was a murderer and torturer for Pinochet.
So he has experience in helicoptering commies?
Zeus can also be tied to the McGill brothers. Jimmy told Howard he is powerful as if lightning shoots through his fingers. And Chuck pretty much felt like electricity shoots through hos own fingers whrn touching anything electrical.
