Porsche 981 Boxster S Side Flood Drain Unblocking - How To DIY Guide - AVOID £THOUSANDS Repair Bills
HTML-код

- In this how to guide, I demonstrate how to unblock the Porsche 981 Boxster S roof mechanism drains. If these are left draining poorly, they can lead to water overflowing from the hood area into the cabin, causing £thousands in repair bills and your car off the road for months! This applies to the Porsche 981 Boxster models.

Great how to, just to add I’d pour water down from top to ensure lines full cleared and confirms the job before reassembling 👍
Great idea zagamufin, I did consider it, but didn't want the water to run on my workshop. I will do this final check in the future, do the work with the roof partially down. Cheers, Raj
This is so useful - thanks for taking the time to document it all. Frankly its an absurd design - why couldn't they have routed the drains into the wheel arch? To take off so much trim to get to the drains is rediculous.
Totally agree and sadly makes this job pretty necessary on the 981 Boxster models. Cheers
Very helpful. I did not know those valves existed. A winter project for sure. Thank you for so much detail.
No problem Barrie, always happy to help fellow Porsche owners. Many thanks, Raj

You did it so effortlessly! I will probably let my mechanic do it but it' was resally good to know abou this. Thank you!
Thanks! Maybe try the easier version that I have released? It makes it simpler! Cheers, Raj

Thank you!!! I just completed this project using your updated (take the back of the panel loose only) method and it worked perfectly. Each side took me 20 minutes and I did not need to take the fender liners off or lift the vehicle. All four of my drains were clogged. The dealer had blown those drains out only a few months ago, it looks like the air blast just compacted the debris and made the problem worse. As you suggested I removed the rubber disk from the top of the outlets. Thank you again!!!
Thanks Genna for your insights, well worth doing, as you say the air line method isn't effective and may worsen the issue. I had one full of debris in the sills that had been blown out of the pipes, it has nowhere to go! Anyway, a new video will be released soon when I perform this on a Boxster GTS this week. Thanks! Raj
Great little how to. Thanks for taking the time to make it. I’ve recently done this job and people keep commenting on the passenger side and the need to access a torx screw and plastic fork underneath the screen wash bottle. Well I am 100 positive no one has worked on my car before and I just pulled the plastic panel away as per your video without any issues and did not remove the torx screw or mentioned plastic fork. I removed the one way valves and took the opportunity to secure some GT side scoops by using self tappers through the rear of the panels and black plastic air intake surrounds. So completely able to revert to standard with no visible drill holes if you wanted. Just the need to buy a pair of new black plastic air intake surrounds. 👍
Thanks Sean for confirming my findings. I have since performed this clean on another 981 Boxster, it took me 30 mins each side, without removing wheels or the wheel arch liners, I simply jacked the car up, undid the outer bolts on the rear wheel arch liner, undid the fasteners underneath the car and in the door entry area, and prised the side panel forward and rested it on some boxes at the rear (leaving the front all attached) while working on clearing the drain plugs and removing the funnel ends completely. I will have to do another video to show this much simpler and quicker method! Thanks, Raj
@M R SPORTSCARS PORSCHE SPECIALIST Hi Raj. Keen to see the shorted version of the how-to video as, unfortunately, my car now needs this work done. The joys of motoring.
@@MRSPORTSCARSPORSCHE I'd also love to see the shortened version, something I need to tackle soon
@@MRSPORTSCARSPORSCHE Well I had at it today after checking the video again.. Took your advice in the comments and gave it a shot, no wheels off, no liners off and all good👍
@@Steve-vc1fy Great to hear! Glad it worked out. I have 2 Boxster 981, an S and GTS coming in this week and will do both and be sure to film the new process with 1 of them! Cheers, Raj
Wow, super helpful - thank you. Taking delivery of a 981 soon, so I will add this to my maintenance list.
Thanks for the feedback ohmyggg. All the best with the 981. Cheers, Raj
Hi Raj. Great video thanks and I plan to look at mine today. Glad I read the comments and learn there’s a shorter method without removing the wheels. Really appreciate the time you spend posting your content. Howard
Update - job completed without any trauma and easier than I’d predicted. Fortunately not too much debris had gathered but worth doing for peace of mind.
Thanks Howard, glad you got it all cleared out. The last couple I have done were really backed up! Cheers, Raj

Great video, thank you, always love seeing these kinds of jobs one can do at home. Have a Merry Christmas!
Thanks so much Jusssy, it was challenging doing the first one, but the second was much more straightforward! Have a good Christmas & New Year! Thanks, Raj
@@MRSPORTSCARSPORSCHE just one thing, the front has two screws and an expanding rivet, I feel you only had to remove one as they'd probably done the job before and it's easier to leave the other two off as it's a pain to get to, ie removing water reservoir

Great video as ever Raj, feel a bit guilty moaning about cleaning the 997 scuttle drain holes after watching this !
Thanks Mark, yes it is very labour intensive getting to these small bits of rubber and cleaning everything out. Coupes are much more straightforward! Thanks, Raj
Another great video. Well done, Raj.
Thanks so much! Raj
WOW ..... what a lot of work! Strange Porsche did not make a port where one can connect a vacuum device to so as to clean the vents.
Yes a lot of work indeed! We are doing this job on all of our Boxster 981s that we stock now.

Could you show where the drain holes are at the top, under the roof please
They are in the front corners of the hood recess. You'll need a torch to see them under some flexible pipes. Cheers
Thanks for the video! Purchased a 981 and it got flooded it’s first day home.
So sorry to hear that, hopefully this fix will stop it happening again! Raj

Another great video. I only wish I had your confidence to do this myself.
Thanks Neil, this is the great thing about Porsche in my opinion, to a large extent, many parts are designed and engineered to be reliably removed and refitted. Thanks, Raj
Just had an expensive repair done to replace under-seat electronic modules. The first indication of water damage was that the top wouldn’t lock into position when closed, resulting in a warning message on the multifunction display. Had to drive top down to my OPC, who needed to have modules shipped from Germany to Sydney. Considering that this particular issue has arisen on 986s, 987s and 911 cabriolets of various generations (PCA has a 1 hour video about this), it really is negligent of Porsche to allow this design fault to remain unaddressed for so long. And to have to pull body panels and trim off in order to access the drains for routine cleaning is completely unacceptable in my opinion. Does the 718 also have this design?
Hi Stephen, I am in total agreement with you and I am sorry to hear your car also suffered but was in a worse water ingress condition than this car. I do think it is a big issue that Porsche needs to do more about. I believe the 718 design is identical. Many thanks, Raj

@@MRSPORTSCARSPORSCHE Thanks for your support of the owners’ community Raj.
Great video Raj, thanks for posting this - subscribed 👍
Thanks CozzyKim! I can do this procedure on autopilot now, done quite a few! Raj
I am currently having issues driver side all drains are clear but under the seat water start get wet not sure where they coming from, this might good to try
It will be these drains, there is also a shorter version of this procedure: ruclips.net/video/p595RFoDeQE/видео.html
Thanks
My man you have just saved me! I needed this doing on mine so thankyou for this how-to!
I have a variety of small issues to my new to me 981 with this being one! Next to try and tackle my spoiler button not working, any ideas on this??
Thanks Jack, glad it helped you. Will save a lot or heartache preventing water entering the cabin in this way! Cheers, Raj

Hi Raj, Thanks for the video. You mention at the beginning getting debris from the front of the car. Are there separate valves at the front too?
Hi Andrew, just the rear valves, the debris is from the front wheel arch liner. Thanks, Raj
Isn't there a way to do this with compressed air in a less labor intensive manner?
Yes this is how Porsche Dealers tend to do it, however as I have seen and other owners can also verify, this may just compact the blockage even more rather than blow it out completely, freeing the drainage channel. Also anything blown with compressed air will then just sit in the area behind the plastic lower sill, not great to leave it in the bodywork in my opinion. I have just released a new quicker version video, literally takes 20 mins per side to perform: ruclips.net/video/p595RFoDeQE/видео.html
Thanks
Raj
How much would a porsche garage charge for this ? porsche reading are fitting my pse in feb and could ask them to do this to?.❤ many thanks
I would take it to a Porsche specialist, they would probably charge at most 1 hours labour per side. There is a much simpler procedure to get this work done here in this updated video: ruclips.net/video/p595RFoDeQE/видео.html
Thanks
Raj
Great job
Thanks! Raj
Very helpful
Glad you think so!
Hi there great detail in your video do you know if this issue is the same on the cayman 981?
thanks
As far as I know this only impacts the Boxster. Cheers
Great video thanks. Is there a need to put the small plastic drain covers back. Would any debris come out easier if they were left off?
Hi Johnny, many thanks, yes possibly a free flow if those plastic ends are left off too. I can't see that being a problem. Many thanks, Raj
Well done first class work
Thanks so much Martin! Raj
Hi any ideas for the 987 drain tubes
Just make sure they flow well from top to under wheel arch, they have grids in the top to try and prevent blockage. Cheers, Raj
Hi thanks but problem is not enough info from any sources
Terry
Thank you very much good job.
Glad it was helpful!
Great details!
Thanks so much Proc Arroll, I may do an updated version, without removing the wheels, and leaving the side panel attached on the front edge, that is my current procedure and it is a lot quicker! Cheers, Raj

Great video Raj. I have a Boxster that needs this doing. Does your company offer that service? If not, could you recommend any garage in north / west London to undertake this work? I’m based in Watford. Thanks.
Hi Jack, not a problem! I’d recommend Rennworks PorschaCare, we use them for all of our servicing and maintenance on our Porsche stock. Many thanks, Raj
This clip is missing a vital section for me. When removing the outer cover (sill cover) there are two attachments behind the lower front wing that were not addressed in this clip. The first is a plastic plug with three 'prongs' which are opened by pushing through a pin to spread the legs - this needs removed prior to removal. Also there is another torx screw which is very unaccessible behind the wing. There's not a lot of room to remove it, but it is vital This clip skipped past that part - it may be because a previous worker had already removed the two fitments and not replaced them?
Thanks Connor for the additional detail. It may be a case of a previous work having removed it. I did remove them on the other side. Many thanks, Raj

Does the cayman have the same
It doesn't have this issue, or the bigger drain that clogs on the Boxster, which feeds from the hood stowage area. Thanks, Raj
To late for me! My GTS seems to have exactly this problem with water under the driver seat And heavy electronics problems.
Sorry to hear this, very common issue sadly! Raj
I won't ever get this issue. Car never goes out in bad westher
Good to hear! Enjoy
