I know this is an older video. But I just bought an D’addario micro violin tuner. Your video helped me choose between the D’addario micro and the Peterson Stobe. I chose the D’addario because of the way it clips to the violin. Your demonstration helped me choose. Thanks for the advice. You still look the same as you did 10 years ago. You go girl!
You're a dear! I began with you at the age of 75 five years ago, and up to now have been self-teaching using you and two others. Just recently I have been fortunate to get Mia Orosco, the 2017 National Grand (American) Champion Fiddler, to agree to give me some lessons while she is at Grad School at Indiana University here in the states. I thank you once again. Obviously I continue to check your RUclips presentations. P.S., this d'Addario micro tuner is being a great help to me!
It's amazing, literally any question I have about anything violin related, I find a video of yours explaining it almost exactly like I need it to be explained for it to "click" in my head. It seems like no matter how vague what i'm looking into is (I literally earlier today wondered "Hm, I wonder if it is easier to play the violin if you play the guitar first?" and you even had a video on that!) Seriously, amazing work, and you are definitely making this difficult journey of learning the violin much, much easier, which is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
I just found your channel and have been binge watching every chance I get. I played violin throughout my youth and into college, but life happened and I stopped to take care of 3 babies. Thirty eight years later, I’ve recently had a longing to open up my violin and start playing again but I’m so afraid of failure and what I might find inside the case. I’m so anxious and disappointed in myself for giving up on something that was such an important part of my existence. It’s probably not conceivable that I’ll ever play again, so now what’s weighing on me is that my violin is stored in a corner collecting dust when someone should be making music with it. I just want to thank you for educating people about this wonderful art form.
Alison I love you !! I dont speak english very well but with your online classes of violin Im getting much better and I bought my violin like 1 week ago. I love how you play and how you look, you are beatiful ! Greetings from chile :)
I just bought one of these - and was about to send it back to the retailer, because I couldn't see the flat/sharp display very brightly and the note letter seemed stuck on "A" . I changed the battery but it still had the same problem. Then after watching your video, I realised it had come with a protective film cover over the display that is printed to look just like the display!. The pack and instructions make no mention of this, so for other dimwits like me, peel it off before you use it!
I used to use my classical guitar tuner (exactly the same tuner but with shorter legs that only hold onto the peg box rather than to hold onto the body of the violin with the violin tuner) and got reasonable, well pretty good results but was easily knocked off from the peg box. This one, holding onto the body of the violin stays in place much better which I, as a teacher, don't need myself but put it on my student's violins during lessons to help them keep their notes correctly intonated. Many have bought them themselves due to its helpfulness in keeping them intonated correctly. Great tuner especially for the price of $24.99 Australian !!
How responsive is this tuner for intonation while playing different notes? I am a beginner and working through your lessons, which are great. I am just at the point where I am starting the first finger exercises. If I leave this tuner on while playing, is it responsive enough to show the notes I am playing as I play? I have a Snark tuner that clips on the pegs and I am not sure it can do this. Without an in person teacher and not yet having an ear for the notes I want to be sure I am playing them properly. Thank you!
You shouldn’t ever be using a tuner fo anything other than to tune the strings. I’m assuming you are following my ‘1-30 Violin Course’ so you will have dots on the violin to use as a guide and that’s all you need.
@@TheOnlineViolinTutor Thank you for the feedback and yes I am following your 1-30 violin course, and really enjoying it. I was seeing reviews out there were people were saying they left this tuner on all the time while they were playing for intonation, and I was getting confused as to how they did that with a tuner. I will just stick with the dots!
Thanks for the demonstration of this product. I love this Tuner also. I am getting this one also. I also got a Mugig Clip tuner. How long does the battery life last while playing the violin a long time ? Approx time until you need to change the battery ?
So you don't know how long it would take to replace the battery when it becomes dead ? 1 Week ? 2 Weeks ? 1 Month ? I believe it take 2032 flat batteries
Hi Allison, I would like to buy a tuner because I usually need to use 4 apps to accurately tune my violin. It would just be easy to get to use one little device to do the job accurately every time. So do you still recommend Daddario tuner? Or do you have new suggestions? Please let me know. Thank you.
What does it mean when I have a G# but there's a line on each side? Obviously, I just want a G but apparently I tuned it to a perfect G#.. How do I fix it?
It’s a great tuner Alison 😊 Thank you so much for telling us about this tuner. I really love it🥰 I so enjoy watching your videos and I bought mine and don’t regret it. God Bless Always and see you on your videos 💜🎻💜🥰
Alison, you never mentioned or tried it while playing? Is it fast enough to play your violin with? can it decipher the notes fast enough? Please let me know, this looks pretty cool! OH! By the way, are you still doing the online classes, and if so, can I get another class from you please?
Judy Bielik I didnt try it as its not something I would personally encourage. It makes one lazy and not have to bother listening where to put the fingers if you have a gadget to rely on. It can be used as such, but like i said, I dont and wouldnt promote tuners personally for that use, hence why i didnt talk about it. I just wanted to talk about what i thought was great about it rather than sell myself out :) When were you thinking? I still do Sunday evenings. Next week?
I often use my clip on guitar type tuner to make I have my fingers in the right place. Could I use this for that? Or only to tune strings? Thanks for reviewing this. Its so neat and I totally want one now.
I really enjoyed this video about the tuner! Would you mind to make a video perhaps on your electric violin and the cost, compared to normal/high end classic violins?
I guess so; see I play in a high school orchestra but haven't really gotten a chance to own my own violin. I was deciding between classic and electric. Anything you prefer?
Tuner works great! Only problem is it times out rather quick (10mins). If you plan on using it to practice for a long time you'll find yourself frequently having to turn it back on.
You are only supposed to use it to tune with - not to actually play pieces. That would be the worst way to play and learn. use your ear because if you dont, you will never learn and you cant constantly rely on a tuner.
@@TheOnlineViolinTutor I understand it's function as a tuner. My comment is about a quick glance while practicing scales not relying on it as a crutch to play a piece. My goal is the mathematically impossible perfect finger placement without micro-sliding.
I've got one of these tuners already and its been working great but after i came home from orchestra i was trying to tune my A string (for violin ) but it kept showing a G#. I dont know how to fix it back to an A plz help
hi, I got a D' Addario tuner for my violin and the clipping part is too short! it won't fit my violin. I didn't know if there were different sizes or something? I got the D' Addario NS Micro Clip on tuner. do you think you could help me?
As far as i know, there is only one size and its adjustable. Im very surprised it will not fit your violin - are you sure you dont have a viola as its the only thing I can think of as to why it wont fit. Other than that, its nothing to do with me im afraid - you will have to contact the place you bought it from.
The Online Piano and Violin Tutor I'm sure I have a violin and it's 4/4 size. don't worry, I got it to clip on one of my pegs as I do not have my violin go out of tune so much. Thanks for the help though!
It doesnt go on the pegs - thats the whole point of this! Its not accurate on the pegs as it is designed to go on the body only. Are you sure that when you flip the little thing on the side, and the connector lengthens, that it doesn't fit on the body of the violin? It lengthens and shortens - perhaps you have not opened it enough? Or you dont have the same one as in the video? I assure you it will fit on the body of the violin.
No. That is not what it is for. It is for tuning only. Besides that, this is most definitely not the way to learn better intonation. It’s totally up to you of course, but professionally and personally, it’s not advised.

Also, this is a good explanation for "beginners only". I hope you realize Alison (and those listening) that these digital tuners are programmed to be a little "out-of-tune" (by 2% at best). Therefore, this is not good enough for mature players. You will find, however, that "A" and its tritone "D#" will be in tune with each other but not the "E", "D" or "G" strings.
