Giant Maximin by Arthur Conan Doyle from Tales of Long Ago (1911) REVISED

  • Giant Maximin was first published in July 1911 in a publication called The Literary Pageant. It tells the story of a shepherd boy called Theckla and his rise and rise.
It seems to me that it is peculiarly relevant to the times we are living through. Everything that can possibly happen has more than likely happened before. There's nothing new under the sun especially our inexhaustible ability to attribute novelty to commonplace events.
I enjoyed narrating this excellent tale and somewhat surprised I had not encountered it before.
The painting by Alma Tadema portrays the debauched court of Roman Emperor Heliogabalus, whom Maximin served. Was it for this that Roman soldiers marched and fought, and gave their lives in dark Teutonic forests?

Yes. I don't disagree with you. I did enjoy Professor Challenger when I was younger and I like some of these historical and supernatural short stories.
More Sherlock coming very early 2022.

@@sherlock_holmes_magpie_audio I feel the same way about *Agatha Christie's Miss Marple & Hercule Poirot* characters ... I have little to no interest in Christie's other stories; such dominate characters as these detectives claim all my attention & I luv murder mysteries including true crime 👍👍🎬🎬

Loud Ads ruin the story for sleeping. The fact that you never have ads in your stories is the reason I listen every night. I'll have to avoid this one as the ads wreck it completely 😔

Always hate the way u tube just stick adds in anywhere! Middle of sentence so you completely loose a scene or important part of story!
Would rather they divided it into 2 playing adds in middle if we must have them. So much completely ruined by advertising, how advertisers can imagine this would make their product popular I can’t imagine???

Combination of a a great writer & narrator together, often amazed how good Conan Doyle’s other work was, can understand why although I’m a Sherlock fan, he wanted/needed a break from him.
Doyle obviously had lot of interest/knowledge of Romans as well as super natural.
