I'm just a begginer and I don't have an artist grade watercolor set. Yesterday, when I had to paint a background for my recent painting, I wasted so many pink watercolor because I couldn't get a vibrant color and I had to take a lot of color out of the palette. I didn't understand why but after watching this video, I understood. Your channel and this serie had helped me a lot!

since I'm just a beginner, I'm currently working with some quite affordable watercolor sets. I work, mainly, with my Sakura Koi 12 colors travel palette, and I have some Ecoline liquid watercolors, they're so vibrant, I love using them. and I have some artist grade watercolor tubes from Holbein and Kusakabe. their colors are so refreshing and bright 😆

great video! I also get asked often which paints I recommend getting, and while I love many paints for different reasons (and have favourites in different brands) I usually suggest 2 options as a go to set for those who love color choices, want to invest but not break the bank and have options to customise their set as time goes by and their style and taste evolves. I love the St. Petersburg White Nights 36 full pan set (or the 24 pans in the 36 palette) for the vibrancy and best value for money IMO. OR the Cotman 45 half pans set for color choices. It's less vibrant but I find for the price offers the best colors selection, and as you said, in time one sees which are ones go to paints and can replace those with the affordable Cotman tubes or invest in artist grade. I recently got the Ph. Radiant and I am in love with them. No competition when it comes to vibrancy and keeping that fresh transparent look. Love your channel!

The daniel smith essentials (the set with 6 5mil tubes of a warm and cool of each primary) was my favorite set to start with. It is professional paint and taught me so much about color mixing. I have since expanded my collection to add Quinacridone violet and Quinacridone purple and Quinacridone gold, and green gold and sap green deep and indigo all by Daniel smith. Its forever my favorite. If your budget is alot smaller, I highly recommend the white nights sets just be careful they are from Russia and have heard they can potentially be pretty toxic but a ton of youtubers recommend it. Happy painting everyone

for pan watercolors my go to paints are st. petersburg white nights. these russian made paints are beautifully vibrant and easily activated with just the swipe of a wet brush. they are artist grade and use honey in the binder so they stay nice and moist. also the price point for these paints is unbeatable for the quality. for tube watercolors i really like sennelier. made in france, these lively, highly pigmemted paints were a favorite of the impressionists. they include lots of honey, so are nice and juicy, rewetting easily. the colors are rich and vibrant and mix gorgeously. they also tend to be priced a lot cheaper than schimke here in the states, which is always a plus for those of us on a limited budget. painting with sennelier is like liquid poetry on paper!

I used honey added paints in Maine, but switched away from them in Florida. The air was tropical and humid, causing problems with the honey.

I use Daniel Smith and Sennelier. I would love to get Schminke also. One of the reasons I love the Daniel Smith and Sennelier is because of the granulation you get with certain colors. Also the smoothness of Sennelier because of the honey. They are such a joy to work with!

I have picked up the $5 set st Michael's, these are good go quick projects like thank you cards or quick sketches away from home. thus if you miss place a tube ( which I have done) or working on an idea you are not going in debt. I also like these when I am working with my niece, introducing her to painting. this is something that I can conveniently forget at her house along with a few of my old brushes.

PH Martin's Hydrus are LIGHTFAST ~ your work is so awesome, I hate to think of it fading because you are using the Radiant line. If I was to add one thing to the information you gave here, it would be "consider lightfastness" when choosing paints - especially if you think you will ever be gifting or selling your paintings.

I have only recently got into watercolors...we're talking weeks. Right now I am playing and learning with a winsor newton student travel set. I like the colores, it's easy to store for putting up quickly, the price was good with a coupon, and it's not overwelming! I have several brands I've heard about I'd like to try, but that's for later when I have more experience, and money.

I am a paint glutton! I started with Michaels Artists Loft, but found them too chalky. Switched to Winsor Newton and Sakura Koi, and still use them in my notebooks for thumbnails and mockups. Love the colors and variety. Recently started using artist grade paints for their lightfastness. My first purchase was Dr ph Martin Hydrus because of their lightest. I love how vibrant they are. Got set 1 and am exploring mixing them to expand my palate. I decided to try tubes. Just purchased a 24 set of Mission Gold, 36 set of White Nights, 18 set of Turner, and some single tubes of M Graham, Sennelier and, Qor. Whew! Have been making pages and pages of mixing charts. Thanks for THAT tip!!! Really the best way to explore what these different paints can do. Love your channel.

When I started watercolor painting years ago I made a swatch book of all of my tubes paints by color family. All swatches are labeled by color name, manufacturer, etc. Flipping through the book it's easy to spot the ones I like best - Daniel Smith wins out for most colors. Like you, I'm a self-taught watercolorist. Watching your videos is a great refresher course for me.

I just started to paint a few months ago, self taught. and have learned by watching your channel among many others. At 52, still many responsibilities are on my plate and have a small budget. However, everytime I choose a student grade, I have wasted my money and go and purchase the artist grade. So from now on, I only use that. My favorite so far is a combination between Mijello, Winsor Newton, and Daniel Smith. I love the whole Mijello set / bullet proof palette. Also, the brushes were another issue when buying student grade. Just grab the artist grade, it will save you money in the long run. :)

I have a yarka pan set my grandmother gave me back in high school. I dont use the pan set often because I really like to mix. The yarka paints are really saturated and vibrant. Ive been making my own water color pallets lately, so the tube paints have been my go to. I have a balance of Turner, windsor and newton and daniel smith tube paints. Turner is vibrant. Windsor is smooth while staying vibrant. Daniel smith may be my favorite because of the granulation and dual colors offered. Love to use texture in my art, my favorite is being surprised by color blooms. It takes a bit of courage to allow blooms to happen, but im usually happy with the results. Also have a set of fine tec pearl colors for metallic effect. These are super saturated with the metallic pigment. Definately need to let water sit a minute or two on the fine tec before use. Best when applied on black paper or dark background. Mesmorizing. 😆

I'm an art student but i've used watercolors more than everything ,my favorites are Holbein, the colors are just so vibrant and pleasant to work with, whether straight out of the tube or rewetting in my palette, they also adhere beautifully to any paper i've set the up against, giving me unique reactions on each. but i do want a wide variety of paints at my disposal, one of my favorite colors is Van Gogh's Cerulean Blue, and compared to Holbien's compose blue which has the same pigments, the Van Gogh is just so much more vibrant, its absolutely my favorite color.

I'm just starting to learn.. but I'm using w Winsor and Newton Cotman in a pan set for learning.. (taking out some of the colour mixing anxiety until I'm ready for it ) then I have a pro set and some Holbein for when I feel more confident. The colours with Holbein are amazingly saturated and some have beautiful granulating effects. ( so I don't waste them )

I seem to like the paints that honey has been added to them. We are in a dry climate and they seem to stay wetter a little longer here. I know that people in a wetter climate sometimes complain that they are sticky. So for that reason and the vibrancy I like M. Graham and Sennelier, but I also add my love for Daniel Smith. Thanks for the video.

I'm a beginning artist who just 'upgraded' from Pan paints to tube paints. So far I am loving the tube paints so much more then the pans I used for years. I haven't tried artist quality yet since I just like to 'play' with my paints and don't really plan on being a 'serious artist' with them, though I may upgrade quality one day :). My favorite student grade paint so far has been the Reeves paints, they have a nice vibrancy and are cheaper then most student grade paints out there (at least of the student grade paints available in my country). It takes a bit more water to get a really good 'flow' from them for wet on wet techniques. It was a bit frustrating at first but now that I got the hang of using them I love them XD

So, first off, I've been really enjoying your videos! They are very intuitive and fun! I was looking for a suggestion...I didn't know if you had tried either, but I'm trying to decide on a "step up" paint set (from the very basic Artist's Loft paints). I'm going between the Prima Confections sets (Classic, Tropicals, Dec. Pies) or the Winsor & Newton Cotman Studio Set (45 Colors). Wasn't sure if you or any of your followers had any ideas on which you/they preferred? Thanks for any tips!

I have a lovely and really convenient travel set by Windsor and Newton that I just love. I swatched out all of my professional grade watercolors and learned that I loved the WN paints the most. But then I started using Daniel Smith for my large palette at home and I am totally impressed with them. They are such vibrant saturated colors, and there are so many to choose from! I just ordered a few more yesterday that I felt my palette was missing. I am addicted to Daniel Smith for home, but will grab my little WN travel palette for on the go. I think once those paints are gone though, I will replace the colors with Daniel Smith.

Yarka, from what I understand, has changed its branding to "White Nights". They are excellent, vibrant paints. Some of the colors, however, are very opaque. They are reasonably priced. Individual pans can be bought to replace those you use up. I have moved on to Winsor Newton, since I found I liked a very transparent paint. Even in that line, though, read on the site, or on the tube, the opacity rating.

I have spent a lot of $$ in pans from goods and different brands (japanese, winsor and newton, etc) and I have to say that I would suggest to save that money and go buy directly 3 or 4 tubes of the best possible brands. Watercolor is so subtle and delicate that for vibrance and colors its worth the investment. Pans are nice but some colors once mixed become dusty and opaque.

Great video, but cost variations also depend on the current prices of pigments used. Some pigments cost much more than others. I did just buy my only Professional 5ml tube of Opera Rose. from Winsor and Newton. Being it is not an expensive pigment, it is cheaper than an artist grade Cad Red, for example. I am learning more about pigments, and pricing, to look for even better savings when I want a new tube of paint. I am a beginner and use Mostly Van Gogh paints right now. Van Gogh, Rembrandt Student is working nicely for me and I am glad I invested in 20 colors for my first set. Paynes Gray, NO BLACK! Ick! LOL!

I have and adore for professional: Lukas, Schmincke, W&N professional a, Rembrandt and White Nights... ooh not to mention Daniel Smith. For student: Van gogh, cotman, Sennelier la petite aquarelle BUT my ALL TIME FAVORITE HAVE TO BE Sennelier l'aquarelle. maybe it's just a personal thing but I feel as though the quality and pigment load of these paints are just a tad more superior than the rest of the professional watercolors I've used. it might be because of they're honey formula, even though white nights claims to also use a bit of honey. Even glazing properties. I just find that my paintings become effortlessly more luminous and overall nicer with Sennelier paints. I am a huge fan of your work and videos 😊😊 hope you get a chance to try these paints out ❤

I actually prefer my colors straight from the tube, since ready-made cake sets tend to be way too dry and grainy for me, an exception is the travel watercolor pan set from Sakura. Since I like to take a small sketchbook around with me, I have a couple sizes of water brushes, and I love how creamy the colors are! I also keep a separate pallet that came empty, and I keep there colors I mix myself like skin tones and pastel shades. My go-to tube paints are Winsor and Newton, since its easy to obtain where I live, but I would love to try Sakura brand tubes someday (when I have the money...) The tube paints keep their creaminess after they dry and later I revive them with water, so it's easier to just get a blank pallet and fill them with the tube paints (This way you can just refill the colors as you please ;3 )
I also recently purchased a few bottles of Dr. Ph Martin's Concentrated Watercolor and Hydrus Watercolor Inks, and I love these for a lot of bright wet-on-wet work!
I'm curious, tho. How do you know you're buying an artist/student grade? They often don't say on the product itself. Is there a mark on the tube similar to the Permanence one? Don't know if that made sense...

For pans, my favorite are St. Petersburg. My favorite for tubes depends on the color. My favorite indigo is Holbein’s indigo, but I have tubes from all over, Van Gogh, mission gold, shinhan swc, winsor And Newton, Holbein, Daniel Smith, Qor, and one Cotman tube.
My favorite colors are carmine, indigo, the Russian green from the St. Petersburg paints, fuchsite genuine from Daniel Smith, and lunar blue from Daniel Smith.

I love my Mijello Mission Gold for sheer vibrancy but I also like that one Senellier color I have [If i have some money I might invest in a set of it or just buy a couple more colors]. I'm itching to try Schmincke .

I love my Schmincke paints and for some extra vibrancy I use Ecoline. I love the colors, but it is not light fast, so I only use it when I digitalise my work. Loved your video!
And a quick question from one creative youtuber to another: your videos are very well editted. How do you make your titels? Do you use Aftereffects?

May I please ask?? What is your opinion of watercolor brush pens?? It seems the paint is in the pen...maybe used for calligraphy?? I am 70 yrs old and a true beginner but would love to give watercolors a try. Right now I am a felter and knitter but want to branch out. I don't mean to ask dumb questions but would so appreciate a reply. Thank you in advance from Debbie and Dexter-Dog her rescued chihuahua in Southern California 👩🐾😁

I'm just a beginner, but I've heard that Daniel Smith watercolors are great. Do you know anything about that line? The best, most enlightening, tip you gave was that you can mix the Ph Martins with tube paint. Do you have a recipe for that? Do you buy the same pigments, like Cad. Red Pale? Or do you mix until you get the hue/value you want? Great series!!

The Stoned Videogame Nerd Daniel Smith May be overpriced if you live outside the US, but within the US, they’re cheaper than W&N or Schmincke.

I make my own watercolor palette with Shinhan paints. I started to use them because their tube paints were in sale and they were the same price as the cotman and they were larger tube. Now I am thinking of adding other brands to see what is the difference between them 😃.

i love watching your posts & videos, they are very informatove.I prefer tubes over pans, because i want to have bright colors without being too vibrant. i also mix a lot of colors and it is easier to do so with tube paints and results in less to no chance of other colors contaminating other colors, which happens a lt to me when i mix with pan paints.i use holbein, and i have 34 tubes which i collected over time.theyre pretty great and the colors are nice and vibrant.but i havent had the chance to test other brands since they are difficult to acquire from where im from.its also difficult to invest in other brands due to the price since i dont paint for a living though i have been using watercolors for nearly 12 years...

I've been playing a bit with Daniel Smith water colors in the tube. They are so much fun to use. The colors are very vibrant. I like the iridescent line of his paints the best. i've been watching some short videos by Cindy Lane and she does some magnificent creations using Daniel Smith paints. The paints are a bit pricy for my budget so I only have 5 colors so far. Thanks for this informative series on water colors.

I started off with W&N Cotman because it is more affordable than their pprofessional line.. However, I plan on purchasing a few of the most used W&N proffessional colors, say 12 to 18 colors over time. My problem is that other watercolor paints are not available at our art shops and due to the bad exchange rates and postage too expensive to order by mail.

I am also a beginner and found out many of these issues the hard way. Still good to know them. Have you done a video on how to paint a background, letting it dry and painting say a flower on it. I think it is wet on wet, but would love your input. I have enjoyed your informative videos. What pan paint set do you like,

  • @missFingernagel

i actually used tube paints for a year and then switched back to using pan paints, because i developed a habit of lazy coloring^^ it was just too much effort for me to open another tube, so i would avoid that at much as i could - to the point where i didn't even care anymore which color i picked. so yeah, i think my lazy butt will always use pan paints :D

Hello Misfit. Thank you so much for creating this video. As someone new to watercolours, it always bugged me how other vids would make the comments of "student grade" vs "professional" without really EXPLAINING the difference. So thank you for that.
In your vid, you mentioned watercolour tubes, pans and cocentrated but what about gansai? Japanese watercolours. Right now the most known is the Kuretake brand but I don't know if you've heard about or tried it for yourself.
It'd be cool to hear your opinion on it compared to the ones you own and know about.
Also have you tried Sakura Koi watercolours?

I personally like the Schmincke Horadam Artist grade paint in Pans since they stay kinda wet even tho they’re supposed to be dry so I can get full saturation in my paintings. BUT I only have a few of them cuz they are damn expensive. I mostly still have the student grade colors from Schmincke since I don’t want to tape my wallet.

I found the biggest Thing with Pan Vs tube is The Pan will last you YEARS or even a lifetime. Tubes get Dry over time. I learned that the hard way. I added Water to my Dry Tube but I will NEVER get all the paint out of that old tube. I switched to Tubes paint years ago. BUT I left my tubes and did not pick up a paint brush for almost 10 years. I gave it up when I had my daughter. The Tubes got dry. I was able to kind of get some paint out. It was not an easy job. I added water, squished the tube, added more water, smashed the end of my brush in, Mixed it, Squeezed it, and did this over and over again. It was a lot of work to get a little bit of paint out of an Old tube. The pans I have had for almost 25 years were ready to paint with as soon as I added water. I have Oil Paints that have been sitting for 10 years too and I can not ever get the Lid off of them but that is another story.
