    That's awesome, great video. That purple fringing is probably heat noise from the sensor caused by high ISO and or long exposure.

      Thanks! Yeah, the crazy narrow pinhole and the super high ISO does make for a pretty messy, gritty look.

    The photos look like polaroid's. I like the film grain quality to them.

    • @FotodioxInc
      @FotodioxInc  2 года назад +3

      It is kind of cool to exploit high ISO grain for a filmic look. The difference is, film had a random grain structure while digital has a more uniform one, so it's never going to look that good.

    • @m4inline
      @m4inline Год назад

      @@FotodioxIncif the iso grain is more uniform or "less random" could the grain be analysed from many shots for consistencies and then "subtracted" from the image to refine it? I am not a photographer just a curious person

    I like the idea & you held the attention by not making it to refined.
    I think a mention on how this could be refined, by using black out material cut to size and a drill for the whole etc, also sleeve the tube with an old dark sock or tights, just to customise!
    And perhaps mention or give some guidance to reversing rings, great for getting kids interested in photography.

    • @FotodioxInc
      @FotodioxInc  2 года назад +1

      :) We actually cleaned the can and then taped the interior of it, but then again we always get black dots like this when we shoot pinhole stuff, even after cleaning the sensor. Due to their very, very narrow apertures, pinholes have a way of highlighting even the tiniest dust specks on a sensor.

    Do you think you could forego the pop can step by instead leaving the metal on the pringles can and punching the hole in that or is that metal too thick for the needle?

    • @FotodioxInc
      @FotodioxInc  2 года назад +1

      The metal on the Pringles can itself is too thick for a pinhole lens, but you could drill a larger hole through that metal and then tape the pop can metal pinhole behind it instead. I just didn't have access to a drill that could drill through metal when I did this build, which is why I went with using the plastic lid instead.

    • @Francois_L_7933
      @Francois_L_7933 2 года назад

      @@FotodioxInc Actually, you can make it work by using a push pin to put a dent in the bottom and then sanding off the bump. This will make the metal thinner, easier to drill and make the edges of the pinhole more like a knife edge for the best image.

    • @FotodioxInc
      @FotodioxInc  2 года назад

      @@Francois_L_7933 The metal cap on the bottom of the Pringles can is pretty thick. Every pinhole I've either purchased or made has been created with very thin metal, so I guess I'd just be cautious of using such a thick metal plat to make a pinhole. Have you used thicker metal before?

    • @Francois_L_7933
      @Francois_L_7933 2 года назад

      @@FotodioxInc yeah, I've used some pretty thick brass sheet before. I've drilled it as is and it worked. I've also made them using the dimple and sand technique. You just have to sand more than on a soda can. When you get a knife edge on the edge of the pinhole and a very round hole, that's when you get the sharpest image. This and having an optimally calculated pinhole size. If the hole is not optimal, whether too small or too big, the image will be fuzzier.

    Instead of refreshing my optics knowledge, I'd like to go the easy way and ask internet people to solve my problem; I have a lot of lenses that I've collected in years from the broken camera lenses I've got my hands on. These lens elements (not camera lens, but elements in it, actually 'lens') are coming in all sizes and shapes. What type of lens can I use to get my pinhole camera in better focus and clarity?
    Answer properly or I'd have to ask Bing's AI chat...

      Oh yeah, old digital cameras and cell phone cams are a great way to get a similar look, and we have some videos about that very topic coming up in the future. But one of the reasons we do DIY projects here at Fotodiox is that it's fun, kind of like restoring an old car or sewing your own clothes is fun. Sure, buying a modern car or new clothes is always going to be more efficient and cost effective, but not as fun :) DIY is rarely if ever the best option for photography tools.

    Fun diy project but please don’t spread misinformation on the internet. This may have a longer focal length but it is not telephoto. From Wikipedia “A telephoto lens, in photography and cinematography, is a specific type of a long-focus lens in which the physical length of the lens is shorter than the focal length.[1] This is achieved by incorporating a special lens group known as a telephoto group that extends the light path to create a long-focus lens in a much shorter overall design.”

    • @FotodioxInc
      @FotodioxInc  2 года назад

      When we talk about pinhole, we really shouldn't use any of the same language associated with optical lenses. The only reason we do this it to help people understand what we're achieving non-optically. This DIY pinhole assembly is only 115mm, while the pinhole's focal length is 140mm, so even though it's a pinhole, it is achieving a similar result to a telephoto lens, which is why we used the term to describe it. You are technically correct though.

    • @TheFlyingDogFish
      @TheFlyingDogFish 2 года назад +1

      Actually, the first definition for telephoto on Meriam-Webster is: "being a camera lens system designed to give a large image of a distant object". So calling this pinhole lens telephoto is perfectly fine.
