Wow, your completely self taught. That's just how I am. I do not have a horse yet, but I'm learning everything I can completely on my own, no help from anyone - which would be helpful but oh well... You seem quite experienced for someone who learned on your own. Great job👍
Well sadly I spoke to soon lol we had everything ready but it turned out she had a bit of attitude which is not good for a person with their first horse! So we are not getting her now but we are looking for a pony now! But thanks for checking out on me :)
Cool, thanks. I'm visiting family and I'm taking care of all of the animals including the horses. I just wanted to make sure I'm not doing anything wrong when feeding them. Thanks!
I just got my horse not too long ago, she had absolutely no training to what the owner said, we sent her to the trainer for 3 months, now 2 months in, I’m super excited!
@@moldybandshirt1045 yes, my horse has severe conjunctivitis and apparently is partly blind, but I don't let that stop it, I'm still training him to be the best race horse he can be, i train him atleast four hours a day!

Thank you for this video! I’m going to get a horse in the near future and I was worrying and overthinking about what exactly the horse should eat and how much. Your vid sums it up well ☺️
What do you do if every bone shows threw the skin that’s skinny and was a rescue that have been with new owners for six years and gets a small bucket of grain a day? And gets very little hay but has pasture
Hi! This was very informative, thank you! I have a question , how many cups of feed do you recommend me feeding a fully grown quarter horse? Thanks for any feed back! You've helped me so much, thank you:) 🌈
Your videos have helped me have more hope for being able to afford my own horse one day, thank you! Would it be fine to have a pasture boarded horse and feed them hay, some grain here and there, and give them a salt block? Also, if I was to keep my horse in a pasture and not a stall, would I need some sort of shelter for them in case it rains? Thank you so much!
Emily Menton Absolutely! If the horse is an easy keeper and stays fat easily i would stick to just grass hay though. And yes, its a good idea to have some sort of shelter to get into away from the sun or bad weather if there is no trees!
im trying to figure out the average cost for every week and month so i can save up for a horse (my parents are buying my actual horse) but my dream horse is a tennessee walker so what would i need to feed it? i want a gelding if that helps at all
I would feed a Tennessee walker sweet feed hi fiber hay and oats or rolled oats!!that is what I feed my two Tennessee Walker geldings! It is a great feed for them. Around $200-$300 a month!! Pls vet bill and annual vet visits twice a month
It won't hurt them, but it depends what grain you're feeding. Just oats? No big deal. But, if its a processed grain pellet such as Purina or Buckeye, they are more designed to be fed daily. You won't hurt your horse but you may not see as good of results.
Hello! I don’t know if anyone will reply because this was posted awhile ago but I had a question.. How often do they go outside? Sorry if it confusing but I can find a video of this anywhere! Do I like take them in a night and take them back out in the morning? Idk but thank you for this vid helped me a lot! ☺️
As much time outside as possible! Mine are out 24/7. Horses are instinctually designed to graze grass throughout the day and walk/run outside. However, if your horse needs separate feed or grain away from the other horses, you could certainly bring them inside at night and let them back out in the morning :)
Do you think that my horse would need sweet feed? He’s very skinny and I’m able to see his hips, some of his ribs and he has like no flesh on his face almost. He’s also a senior horse so do you think I could mix it with the senior horse feed? ❤❤
I would start by putting him on a quality feed with at least 14% protein. Senior feed can be great for weight building as well. I use Nutrena Proforce Fuel for my skinny ones, if it’s available in your area i would definitely recommend. But otherwise, something 14% protein.
Ok I was just wondering how many square bales of hay does two horses need to make it through the winter when they have 7 acres to feed on all the time? I like your videos all thanks for all the help!
My third cousin has a horse rescue really under weight it has long hooves and they feed him corn and other grains AND SOME hay! The water is nasty brown the stall is mud he is thirty six they had him for six years and the owner I think does not put all lot of attention but he does have a pasture
Jeremy Gilreath it definitely wont hurt. We like horses to drink as much as possible in unfavorable conditions so that they keep their gut moving and dont colic. Lots of horses colic in the winter so extra salt to encourage them to drink wont hurt!
Hey Michaela. Great video as always but when I looked at the title I realized horse is spelled wrong. Now I don’t really care cause I knew what you meant but I just wanted to let you know just Incase you wanted to change it. Can’t wait for the next video. Bye.
Angel Ortiz There are lots of mare & foal feeds, and feeds designed specifically for growth. We used to feed Purina Growth at our barn to our yearlings until they were about 3, and then were switched to the performance feeds.
Hey I don’t know if anyone will reply but my question is that if you have a 1500 pound horse how many pounds of grain should you feed in the morning, and at night?
If you haven't already figured it out you'll have to loom at your bag and it'll usually say ×lbs per hundred lbs of horse, so you gotta do some math and it's kinda confusing but basically find that and then split it in half for your morning and evening feed
So overwhelmed with this person says feed this that person say feed that. I am currently feeding Triumph . She has pasture except now that winter is here. She is 11 and a very fat Quarter Horse. What an awesome video. You certainly helped me lots. I haven’t worked with horses in over 20 years. I just purchased a farm that came with a 31 year old Appaloosa. She drinks from the creek and grazing in the pasture. Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks 😊
Definitely feed her more than once a day. Just like us, its hard on the body and needs more than that. Does she have teeth? That’ll affect what she can eat easily. Add healthy coat oil or even just veggie oil from the store to add fats and help her coat!
@@MTHorses Thank you for your reply. She doesn’t have but a few teeth left from what I could see and from what the previous owner told me. Her hooves are all chipped up as well. Well my neighbor has 5 horses and has owned them for 15 years so she recommends 4 quarts.
Feeding rate goes by weight and activity level. Simply read the directions on your feed bag.
@@yeahok2790 Thank you:)
I recommend 6 pounds of feed per feed, two scoops every morning and night

What type of oats so they need.
The quarter horse breathing air getting fat is soo accurate 💀

Will a horse over eat if you leave food out? Do we need to ration it?
If they arent used to having 24/7 food they might. Likely just a belly ache is all that will happen, but they will learn to pace their eating.
