I believe for various factors: he had just started with the band to be recognized for their music and they were always around on tour, Taylor was a huge star, always surrounded by many people, Matty also said that she was a kind Barak Obama, I believe all this Matty wasn't ready, he wasn't ready for a superstar like her and he was scared of being recognized only as "Taylor Swift's boyfriend", he himself said that he got so paranoid about these things.
