Marrying a girl from a good community and good family uplifts relations between those communities. Somethimes several men may clash on marry one woman at the same time. When that happens, her father and community elders makes the final decision on who to marry. It may come down to how many cows you have and your family reputation. In the olden days, scouting for a good woman was practiced and messages relayed back to the interested suiters, just like football scouting today. Either way, respect was always admired.
