    This informative vlog is for expats either hoping to move and live in Brazil or those who are already here.
    This is another vlog made up of video clips from our daily life in beautiful Bahia, Brazil. In July 2021, we retired from our lives near Washington DC (USA) and moved to live in Elci's native country of Brazil. Pepi was born in India and loves Bahia because of the many similarities he finds between here and his region of Punjab in India. During our first two years in Brazil, we roamed around many parts of Brazil in our 2008 VW motorhome van. During this time, our vlogs relate to our travels and experiences. In December 2022, we completed building our small and rustic bungalow in beautiful Bahia from where we vlog about our day to day life and our regular visits to Itacaré, Ilhéus and Itabuna.

    I'm an American who's been living in the interior of Brazil for about 15 years and agree with these valuable tips. Basically, keep an open mind and don't expect everything to be the way it was in your home country. You need to learn to adapt and be flexible. Relax and enjoy.

    The tips you gave are not only for Brazil, but for any foreigner anywhere in the world. Brazil is a wonderful country with friendly people. We've been living in Brazil for 11 years and we can say we have no intention of returning to the USA.

      Agreed 100%. After 3 1/2 years of living here in Bahia, we too have no interest of ever LIVING in the US again. We will continue to visit the US every now and then but that is about it. Brazil living, Brazilian people, Brazilian food, the low cost of. living... all that has spoilt us :)

    Very wise. I am a brazilian that has spent a couple of years in the U.S., but other than that spent all the rest my life in Brazil. Your advice is pure common sense. I am from the far south of Brazil, near the border with Uruguay. Brazilian diversity is very clear to me. When I go from the south - where the majority of people are german or italian descendants - and go to the northeast or to the north, the cultural difference is huge. 100% of Brazil speaks the exact same language, but regional differences are bigger than in countries where there are several languages like China or India.

    You can always block your debit cards. 😅 At least in Brazil accounts, you go to the bank app, enter the "cartão" section, click bloquear/desbloquear cartão.

    • @pepielci
      @pepielci  3 дня назад

      When we decided to come to Brazil in July 2021, our USA banking people had advised us against using debit cards and that is the only reason we decided to stick to using credit cards. Things may have changed now but we are so used to using our credit cards, that we see no reason for switching.

      @pepielci Understood. I think, from a purely financial pov, using credit is way better, obviously. 😅 But, for the sake of keeping more choices available, while still maintaining safety, I prefer to use NFC -- only.

    Take care not to overgeneralize. In São Paulo, things are open Saturday and some on Sunday.
    As for toilet paper, that's really disgusting, but most places don't have modern sanitation, but that will depend on each building.
    I'd just add one more thing to your list: don't eat things with your bear hands. Use a napkin to hold your sandwich and chew with your mouth shut. To us, many foreigners don't seem to have manners at the table.

    • @pepielci
      @pepielci  3 дня назад +2

      Sorry for sounding like I was overgeneralizing. Brazil is sooooo diverse and I should have mentioned that. Interestingly, here in Bahia, people eat like they came straight out of the Amazon jungle... zero etiquette when it comes to handling forks, knives etc. I plan to make a vlog just for our followers in Bahia and perhaps the Northeast who need to know, for example how sophisticated Europeans manage their forks and knives.

    • @caiorossi4776
      @caiorossi4776 3 дня назад

      @pepielci Most foreigners tend to come to SP or Rio, so it's very common to see them impressed by our oversanitized eating habits. For example, here in SP,, though not in Rio, we'll eat our pizza with fork and knife.
      Also, those who come to work find it strange that people line up at the toilet in the office in order to brush their teeth after lunch.
      But Bahia is Bahia, the most African state in Brazil. It's very singular, and there's also a huge contrast between its little towns and Salvador .
      But you have to consider it' doesn't represent, not even ethnically, the whole country. The whole state has 14 million people, which is much less than the metropolitan area of the city of SP, the capital of a state with 44 million inhabitants. So they're not statistically that relevant when it comes to portraying what "Brazilians" are like.
      But keep up the good work and be most welcome to Brazil.

    Pepi and Elci, I say this in gest, but why doesn't anyone ever tell visitors to Bahia there may be some upset stomachs of the first time eating food cooked in Dende oil? It only lasts for about a week for your stomach to get used to Dende oil, but...

    • @pepielci
      @pepielci  3 дня назад

      Hehehehe.... That's a great idea for a future vlog - "The after effects of Dende oil". However, being that I am from India, I have not yet suffered from its aftereffects. In fact, I love the hot sauces of Bahia too; sauces that would give ordinary people a run for the toilet :)

      Thank for the advice. We live in a fishing village where everyone knows everyone. We only drive to the cities when necessary and that too during the daytime. By sunset, we're home and enjoying our quiet semi rural surroundings.... For us, Salvador is nice for a weekend visit to restaurants, malls etc... that's about it.

      I lived in Frederick, MD for 35 years so know that area well. When we decided to move from the US to Brazil, we sold and or donated all our belongings and arrived in Brazil just with 2 checked in suitcases and 2 backpacks.... That's all we needed, so have no knowledge of shipping companies. I'm sure you can google some in Baltimore.... Capital gains laws are always changing so best to google that info. that is pertinent to today.

    I also have been living in is it for 3 years and I disagree with a few of these points. If you want to have children, then the woman you date must scientifically be in the twenties. Just don't take them out of Brazil and you'll be fine be honest with them from the beginning.
    The number one mistake I think people could make is trying to live in Brazil before having some type of understanding of Portuguese to me as the one biggest mistake.

    Some of these are pretty mild in consequence, like speaking loud english. Also, most of the security tips are good for tourists everywhere. If you go around Romania or some places in Europe flailing around the fact you're a touristyou're getting taken for a ride there. So just watch out a regular ammount.
    The dangerous thing lately is that you go in weird places that drug traffic has taken over, so be mindful not going in slums without knowing people in there or knowing what you should do to go in.
    Also, racism and nazisms are crimes in Brazil, so if you're one of these things, please don't come.

    • @pepielci
      @pepielci  3 дня назад +1

      We live in a fishing village so our semi rural life is quite mundane compared to those living in cities. We rarely visit our surrounding cities and when we do, we're back home to our compound by sun set. Thanks for your advice.

    From 13 minutes onward it became a little bit schizo until tip 25 hits. Lol
    You tried to add some b-roll to the video to add some flavour but didnt remove the audio of those videos.

    • @pepielci
      @pepielci  3 дня назад

      Here is what really happened and I had to find a way to fix it while editing. My camera ran out of battery at around the timeline where I added B-roll.... Then, the section that follows the B-roll was filmed using a fresh new battery. However, the audio for one of two of the tips was missing since the battery died. So I re-recorded that while editing at home and covered my visuals with B-Roll.... must have forgotten to adjust the audio gain on the B-Roll..... It's hard when you do everything alone.... Plan a vlog, film the vlog, edit the vlog, create a thumbnail, post the vlog, promote the vlog etc etc etc.... :)
