oh wow. i was at the wonderpen dsily journalling event with you. your beautiful VP Pen started a side conversation on fountains pens. thank you for making the evening so enjoyable
I needed that discussion on social anxiety. I’ve dealt with anxiety for years, this talk really reached me. Thank you for the video! Felt like I was hanging out with a friend. ❤
I’m so happy to hear that you found this video helpful. Thank you for joining me and for being vulnerable with me. It sounds like you’ve been dealing with anxiety for a while which must be so draining.🪫I like the idea of us supporting each other so we don’t have to feel like we’re struggling alone!
What a beautiful video! I’m so glad you went to the Pelikan hubs meetup and put yourself out there. FP folks are the kindest, most welcoming people I know!
Thank you so much, Liane! I completely agree - I actually bumped into some of the people I met at the Pelikan Hub at Scriptus! It is so nice to start seeing familiar faces at different events! :)
Man you discussion on social anxiety was so close to me... (I'm ok at work, once I get there because I have "warned up." I know the people and the space & my job...BUT I do still get nauseous if I have to present my findings - rather that the gathering and analyzing. I do use a script, right down to "Hi my name is..." Thankfully my presentations are on zoom & probably will be until I retire. Flexible work environment and offices across the USA.)
One piece of advice I got from some presentation training was to nail down your intro! So sometimes, that is still something I will practice because it helps me start off my presentations with a more confident tone. I try to ignore the little voice in my head that says I go downhill from there. Having the ability to present remotely has its advantages for sure! I also think it depends on the type of presentation we do. I notified for the big company-wide talks my company used to do, they would also have a script and would practice for days leading up to it. That’s a bit different from a quick debrief (and those are the “unpredictable” ones I’d get most anxious about!)
What you said about Journalling is why I went day free - not daily, sometimes use more than one page... BUT I am not sure it is for me, I miss the dates... It's not even January. I'm hoping the weekly TN will be my fix - so it will no longer be my meal planner. Planning on a weekly TN for that. (I'm hoping to get the whole family involved and the TN seems less intimidating for them to use.) My holiday stickers are too big for the monthly boxes - I used to put them on the dailies - I forgot about that when I went day free. I own my urge/desire to use stickers & wash tape.
I have come to appreciate the dates so much! While I’ve been journalling since I was young, I wasn’t as consistent as I am now. And, now that I see the benefits of reflecting daily, I’m more motivated to keep that up and I think having something dated will help me! It sounds like you’ve got some good ideas to experiment with before the new year starts. The best combo is the one you will use!
Oh my gosh I have so much social anxiety. I am very much in the same boat. I feel you! I also struggle with anxiety and ADHD. I’m medicated and in therapy. 💜I love that you found a way to work through it and experience these amazing events. I am envious! I loved living vicariously through you. Great video! I love this chat style while I journal or plan.
Thank you for your kind words! There are still some events where the anxiety “wins” and I don’t end up attending. Admittedly, it helps when I’m genuinely excited about the subject matter. I’d glad that you’ve been getting support to help you manage your anxiety and ADHD. It’s a very slow process, developing strategies and practicing them enough for them to be effective. It sounds like you’ve set yourself up well and I hope you and your therapist are able to develop some strategies that will enable you to participate in more events (if that’s what you’re wanting!).
This video was amazing and definitely resonated. I was at Helen's journaling session Saturday night and like you, was nervous. I had met Helen before, go to Wonder Pens all the time, love journaling, and yet, I was a bit of a hot mess beforehand. I even had thoughts of not showing up 😔. I went and had such a great time. I am considering going to one of WPs journal meet ups as a way to put myself out there in a way that isn't too drastic! Thank you for creating a safe place to discuss our vulnerabilities and for sharing some practical tips too.
Thank you for sharing your experiences with me! I had similar thoughts about not going to the event (and every other event I’ve attended), even though I have enough evidence supporting how great these events are at this point! I’m so glad you had a great time! They do a great job of hosting events. I haven’t gone to one of the journaling or letter writing meet ups yet (I saw Paper Plus Cloth offer them, too!), but it’s on my listen of events to try out in the future. If you ever see me at an event, please done hesitant to say hi. I am shy, but I really do love meeting others in this stationery community!
I really relate to your experiences with social anxiety. Something that has brought me a lot of peace is the concept of recovery not as a linear path but as a spiral. We might end up in the same place as before, but this time we have more tools to handle it. Another great video ❤
Thank you for this message! That idea of recovery being a spiral, rather than something linear really resonates with me. It’s a good reminder to focus on progress, not perfection!
I’m glad to hear that you’ve had a good time and that you’re able to overcome your social anxiety, or at least work with it. Helen has been very open about her new diagnosis of ADHD and her anxiety which has been very helpful to me.
Thank you! I’ve been working on accepting that this is a part of my experience and instead of striving for a future where it doesn’t exist, I’m focusing my energy on developing healthy coping strategies to increase my window of tolerance. Ironically (or maybe not?), I’ve made the most progress in workplace settings, but I think that’s probably because I had to adapt! I’ve appreciated that she’s been open to sharing her diagnosis and experience with it.
Enjoyed this video - thank you for sharing! I can relate to the social anxiety, it's not easy to be able to dive into events... but at the same time, it's so wonderful... ahhh!
Thank you so much, Linda! I used to be quite hard on myself about struggling to go to events… and while I still experience the anxiety, I’ve gotten somewhat better at going anyway. I’m still surprised at how much energy it takes out of me, through - between the anticipation for the meet, during, and after it’s over. 🪫 I agree with you - they’re always so wonderful!
Hello, I was at the workshop you attended as well. I too was nervous when I introduced myself to Helen. I stammered a bit, but she was kind and listened to me. I would’ve like the event to continue for another hour as I was having a good time.
Thank you for sharing your experience! It sounds like we had similar interaction experienced with her. I completely agree that she was kind and attentive, and that the time flew by!
oh my gosh. Firstly, for some reason, RUclips doesn't notify me when someone tags me, so it was a pleasant surprise to hear my name. Thank you for sharing about my video! Secondly, I got such bad social anxiety before the Pelikan hub. I only slept 2 hours the night before! I ended up having a really, really good time tho. Thirdly, it's so cool that you got to meet Helen!! But also, it reminded me of when I first met an Instagram artist at a local small biz festival. I was checking out and handing her my credit card to buy her stickers and just blurted out "I FOLLOW YOU ON INSTAGRAM!!" and she was like, "Oh that's awesome, thanks!!" and then there was silence while the credit card machine was running and I was like "I'm really nervous I'm sorry" and it was so awkward....... so that's what your story reminded me of lol. I don't know if I've improved any from that, so if I were to meet Helen, I'd probably have a similar interaction haha. The event sounded like fun tho!! Thank you for sharing your experiences.
Oh my gosh, your experience of meeting that artist at the local small biz festival hit so close to home! Despite our hesitation to participate in events like this, I’m glad we both ended up having a good time! What was your experience like for this year’s Hub, now that you already had one experience under your belt?
@@LittleCocoStudio this year was so much fun!! I invited a friend that I penabled so I spent most of it trying to get as much ink and pens for her to try and take home 😆 and it was so good to see faces I remembered from last year! Chatting with them was like picking up right where we left off! So unexpected, but It was awesome 🤗
I've been a physician for a good number of years and I still get nervous talking to families about their lovedones cause you never know how they might take it However one of the places I have no fear at all is in a stationary or pen store like whens the last time anyone had a fit in a stationary store ... coffe shop, fast food ... all the time but almost unheard of to have unfriendly people in a pen store ... sometimes when I'm have an unplanned conversation where someone will say something to me that makes me think I will actually stop and think about it and kind of look around like I'm trying to find the answer and that kind of gives people the idea that you are searching your brain library for the file where the information is being stored and that usually distracts them from my mumblings and sometimes the answer is right there... the only other thing I can suggest is remember that someone who is having a conversation with you is probably just as nervous to talk to you as you are to talk to them :) HOpe that helps take care
Thank you so much, for sharing your experiences and those tips! I agree that there’s something nerve wracking about the unpredictability of the response from someone you don’t know personally. You’re so right as well about pausing. When others pause and think, I don’t think twice about it. It’s another good reminder to take a few breaths before reacting! Thank you, again. It helped a lot! 🥰
Hopping in with some commentary about anxiety and ADHD. Anxiety, while commonly diagnosed as a condition on its own is usually a symptom, and things like social anxiety can crop up from things like, sensory overload, forgetfulness (like not remembering people's names), and guilt and shame that can come from social situations when people dont know the hidden "rules". If someone is dealing with anxiety it's worth interrogating what about the situation is activating you, and you might be able to use that in conversations with a therapist or doctor, or help yourself unpack it and make yourself more comfortable for next time (like wearing loop headphones or whatever else would make you more comfortable) For me, I get super emotional about being vulnerable, and worried about how people will perceive my emotion (will they think im weird/overbearing/creepy?) and that's just something I have had to start cherishing and appreciating about myself.
Love this!! Thank you so much for sharing this. I agree that it’s important to understand the root cause of what is activating me. I’m going to look into loop headphones - I’m interested in learning more about them! Thank you as well for sharing your own experience. As an emotional person myself, I appreciate interacting with others who are open and vulnerable! I’m glad it’s something you’re cherishing and appreciating about yourself!

😮 that’s amazing! Thank you for the kind words. It was a fun evening and everyone was so nice. Maybe I will see you at future Wonder Pens events? :)
a chat about stationery and social anxiety? possibly the perfect video :)

How did your diner notebook stamp get so dark?
Hi! Which diner notebook stamp are you referring to in the video? I wasn’t sure if you were asking about the one on the leather cover, or if it was somewhere in the notebook insert?
