    I have watched every video I can find on wave plates, and read every article I can find explaining them, and not one of them explains what is physically happening inside the medium (other than mentioning the different indexes of refraction for differently oriented polarized light). I want to understand what is happening at the atomic level to alter the phase of the polarized light, and no-one has yet to describe that.

      maybe the nswer no one knows why dont you dicover it yourself using your urrent knowledge and some experiments

      You should first understand how an optical medium changes the speed of light waves (what is the origin of the index of refraction?). There is a good chapter about this in the first volume of Feynman's lectures on physics, which you can find for free on the internet.

      It is just a HeNe! Probably 20mW only.
