Johnny, my take on F is for family is that is is not supposed to be sending messages, but rather is sharing a perspective on family life in the generation that is mostly responsible for our own. As someone who had an older dad (born in 51 and I was born in 92) I recognize alot of the behavior In the show as familiar to my fathers from his early life in the 50s-80s

I believe Burr has said that this is definitely some reflection on his father and family in the 70s. It also hits the nail on the head with an Irish Catholic family. The fifth season really explored father/son and I feel like Burr had experienced something with his dad recently

"It's a show about trying to mess up your kids a little less than your parents messed you up"

One thing I do like about Frank is how much effort he puts into overcoming the biases he has, especially when it comes to his kids.
Everything about his kids shows how they deviate from the stereotypes of their gender.
-Kevin and Bill despite being boys are very sensitive and if anything, are the ones who need way more emotional support then their sister.
-Maureen also has more stereotypically male interests than female interests. She loves computers, math, and gore, and she wanted to wear a male Halloween costume which aren't things that you'd associate with a typical 10 year old girl. She's also not as sensitive as her brothers, with season 5 being the only time we see her be sensitive.
And while that doesn't seem bad for us, Frank is a guy who was raised with very sexist and toxic masculinity values. Plus this in the 70's, and yet he doesn't insist that Maureen take up more girly interests, and he's not like Joseph who shamed his daughter for wanting an education. He could've given Maureen shit for being gifted but he didn't.
As for Kevin and Bill, even though he's not super understanding of them he does try, not once does he tell them that "men aren't allowed to be soft" and that conversation with Kevin where they talk about their feelings? That's pretty progressive on Frank's part.
We also don't ever see Frank be that way with Sue either. His issue with her getting a job wasn't that he thinks women should only be at home, his issue with it was him projecting his own insecurities onto her. Also we never see or hear him judging Sue for having gone to college.

F is for Family has been a favorite of mine and I think the way they ended the series is beautiful. Both Bojack Horseman and F is for Family were shows that really dug in to the grit of life with a good combination of wdf, funny, and heartful moments. It’s very hard for me to decide which season of F is for family is truly the best because for me all five seasons were really great. Truly this show is more of a satire on the American dream and basically how a little fucked up life was in the 1970s in a funny way. Frank Murphy is one of the most captivating and most relatable character in the entire show because I heard that some people say that every time they watch Frank they see their own fathers in Frank. And I will admit Frank in a way does also remind me of my father. And when you really look at all this shit that he has been through it’s fair to say that he has a lot of reasons to be angry mean can you blame the guy. I mean his hopes and dreams got shattered, his father was such an abusive asshole, his whole worldview was shattered as well, getting punished after saving the airline, he saved that fat fuck Bob Pogos job which appears to be nothing more than sitting on his fat ass eating all day, and Bob stood by and allowed it to happen. And then when all of a sudden Bob realized that he made a mistake letting Frank go then all of a sudden he begs him to come back after Rosie hooked Frank up with a job. His children are a bunch of ungrateful screw ups. All and all Frank could just not catch a damn break in the show so I mean he has every right to be angry. Basically angry about the fact that he really believed in the American dream and come to find out that it was all just a bullshit illusion.

The final scene was great, the finale itself left me hoping there’d be more. Probably cuss I didn’t look at the episode list ahead of time and still thought it was gonna be 10 episodes long like the last couple of seasons. Some aspects seemed a little rush. Like I think Sue’s brother both times was a little too quick to forgive her, and as u said, they did stuff with Maureen but her arc seemed incomplete. But as far as getting to that ending scene, I think all 5 seasons made it feel earned. I loved this show since season one and bummed to see it end. But I guess I rather see it end with me wanting more as opposed to it going on and on and me wanting it fo stop.

Nobody is talking about how important the end of Kevin’s story arc was. In a way it’s just the beginning. Him and Alice use one of the broken condoms. The scene right after where her father kicks him out, is very reminiscent of Sue’s father’s opinion of Frank. With the hint in there that she might get pregnant, the show ends with Frank’s cycle starting all over again, this time with Kevin at the front of it. There’s a reason they essentially made that the final scene of the show.

F is for Family is my favorite series of the Adult Netflix shows. It was a wholesome show with a family dynamic that was perfect. And for the first time in a long time, like King of the Hill before it, we got a father that wasn't stupid for jokes sake, Frank is a human being and like any human he isn't perfect. I started watching the show because im a big fan of Bill Burr, but ended up staying because i fell in love with all the characters. Yall must understand that Bill Murphy lived in a society and time that discouraged men from expressing their emotions or feelings. Hence the only emotion he felt he had was anger. Add childhood trauma, fighting in the Vietnam war, missed dreams and opportunities, and providing for a family of 4 kids, and we had a really emotionally conflicted man. Its great to see him lose all those baggage and realize that above all else, family matters 🤗🤗

Throughout the series, Frank would go trough phases were he was happy and doing better, but as soon as something bad happened, he would fly off the handle and go back to his old ways. This final scene shows that he's learned to stick with his changes, instead of going into a rage, he hangs up the phone and focuses on his family. They also hinted at her being gay *a lot.* I absolutely loved when she started hanging out with Bridgett in Season 4 I thought they made a great team, and with the witchcraft going on in early season 5 I thought she and Bridgett would start going out. Unfortunately they back peddled and made her arc only about being overlooked. The rest of the show was fantastic, the fact that that is my biggest gripe says a lot.

I mean they share the same name, they’re both ginger, burr voices frank, and I remember hearing that the family in the show is based off burr’s own family so I thought it would’ve been a perfect choice to show bill all grown up like that.

This has been one of my favorite shows in a long time. I like that even though Sue and especially Frank, get so preoccupied or angry that it affects the kids, they still care about them and love them. Frank didn’t know how to handle each of his children, and at first discouraged their behavior. But as time went on he grew, and started accepting how they were. A lot of adult cartoons with a stubborn angry father take the route of having him be a complete asshole to his family for comedic purpose, (family guy, modern simpsons, American dad) but Frank has genuine love for his wife and children, even if he sometimes doesn’t know how to show it. When he fucks up he feels regret and does what he can to make it right. He realizes that he can’t let the way his father treated him growing up be how he treats his own family. He’s a man that isn’t the best at showing his emotions, but he tries to do better.
