The most optimal way is not to swap from merciless until you've got absolutely 0 ammo. You can reference the Hunter Solo 2 phase "Nezarec, final god of pain" to find this. Swapping Loadouts to Witherhoard with bait and switch rockets or bait and switch Cataphract (if Lowman) will increase the total damage.
Yeah in an optimal setup you'd do that. My method was mostly just a fluid thing for people who don't feel like load out swapping. It's not what you'd use for something like solo Nez

@adamboy0559 I have both. I believe Zal is flat out better. But with the season mod that boosts the nano-rockets I think it's pretty close. This season I'm having way more fun using Epochal.

🤌🤌 I dead ass use sunshot. Make a ton of special and heavy with an ammo loadout. Than have my DPS/surge loadout have merciless. With plenty of ammo to pick up.
I forgot where I saw it but under perfect condition, merciless can deal around 2 mil in a stupidly short amount of time (that’s super insane for a special weapon)

I see I have to brake this down. As merc shoots faster, it’s damage goes down. That’s the reason. When you have something like controlled burst and rapid fires with vorpal, it’s already better.
No, Merciless gets an 400% faster fire rate when its fully ramped up. And loses 12% damage from that, AND has a 50% damage perk AND has better reserves than other High impact frames. Even without the the kill perk it has better DPS AND total damage than any other fusion. and with the kill perk its not even a question.
i use merciless in wr because there is so little heavy but so much special so merciless packs a punch every floor
It's very good in WR since there's plenty of kills to keep impetus up as well. Love it

Is impetus supposed to show up on the buff side of the screen? If so then it is bugged this season.
Idk if it's supposed to, but it doesn't. But you can tell you got the kill cause it'll reload fast

Goes hard. I didn't mention supers as you can tack on celestial or any other damage super onto almost any rotation. And telling everyone that celestial is good felt redundant.

It's better overall dps if you use Witherhoard + Carty C + Apex
Only without Impetus. The difference in DPS between Merci and Cart is GIANT and witherhoard isn't very much DPS it's just easy to keep constant.

That's right. They're lazy and easy but not that much damage

That's a rather poor advice, let me tell you. Thunderlord with catalyst is a great weapon to have but there's no reason for inexperienced players to not practice more advanced rotations when they have the chance. That's the only way you can improve, by putting in the effort and pushing past your current limitations.
By dismissing guides like this as sweaty elitist stuff, you only gatekeep yourself from improving. The best decision I've made so far in Destiny was starting to put some extra effort in my damage rotations. Gone are the days where my damage could be lacking in raids and dungeons, and I'm glad for that. Plus it also gives meaning to grinding weapons, since you will be able to make great use of them.

Good explanation as to why the expected DPS can/IS lower than the actual DPS in game. Also, its rare or impossible to get every shot , never mind a critical shot.
On a lot of bosses the numbers are inflated also!

Wipe screen numbers are inconsistent and don't match the actual damage done to the health bar of the boss, which is what is used for when the boss dies. You could do the exact same thing 10 times and have a range of numbers with 100k damage in difference.
Doubleslug or Iza Rocket something like that is still better😂😂😂
