Thank you! I'm going to teach a group of little kids scouts to sew. I love sewing but I'm worried that the kids will poke their fingers and get frustrated. I have anxiety so running classes makes me nervous but I love sewing so I'm excited to teach them to sew on their own badges.

Hi! Kids NEVER seem to have a problem poking themselves...it really is the adults who think it's a problem. Teaching kids to sew is so rewarding! Sewing classes can be very very hectic but if you use good quality materials and youre well prepared it will be much easier. I still get a bit nervous before teaching too!!!! Don't forget I have lots of free resources at sewasoftie.com :) And always happy to help if yo have any questions or come over to the Sew a Softie facebook group!!

Thank you for teaching every child in this world about how to sew without a machine and with their hands. And that they will know how to use a machine and that they would know how to teach others That will need help.

Those big, blunt yarn needles can be good for very young kids to practice with, if you give them burlap or some other loosely woven fabric to try. You can set it into an embroidery hoop and thread the needle with colorful yarn so they can just play with it and get used to stab stitches. Probably they'll make a big scribbley type mess, but that's what little kids' art always looks like at first! Yarn is just a different medium. I think it would make a charming sampler to hang up alongside their later work to show how their skill and dexterity can improve over time.

Yes! Absolutely! Those blunt needles are perfect for burlap but not felt!

Hi, I use Clover, Chenille needles. When I'm using sewing thread I use number 24. If your thread is a bit thicker you can use number 22. There are lots of other brands also. What you want is a small needle with a large eye.

What is the right age to teach kids to sew?

Any age that a child wants to learn is a good age. You can start at 3 if your child wants to sew :)
