This is exactly the kind of game that I love to see on GamePass. It's not something I would go out of my way to buy, but is perfect on a subscription model as a small filler title between playing bigger games. Great too see MS continue to get these smaller studios some exposure there.
@@kingbaard5395 from what I’ve read these small development teams for these smaller indie make most of their money back by taking a deal to be on Game Pass. Steam sales are a bonus, and I have a feeling this one will come to PS4/5 since their last two titles were on both
This is honestly what I NEEDED. I am in the middle of playing Oblivion, 103 hours in; I'm burned out. Before Oblivion I played Fallout 4 (although I enjoy Oblivion far more than Fallout 4) and all I needed was to be able to not just beat, but complete, an entire game in 4-5 hours. I stopped at every detail and didn't have to spend an eternity backtracking to get every collectible and upgrade like in Batman Arkham Asylum, nor did I have to fight 20 hidden bosses and a whole new boss rush mode like in Hollow Knight. I will say that for $25, it is too much. But since it is free on Game Pass, this was an amazing experience. I recommend the devs lower the price to $20 or even $15 due to it's size, but beyond that I cannot complain. I actually disagree with the premise that there isn't enough skill diversity in this game, as it really is quite short, and there is enough there for a game where combat is not the focus. The art style, simple story, and opportunity to just relax and breeze through a beautiful world is where this game shines. This game wont win any awards, and it isn't anything ground breaking, but it is easy, fun, and quick. Play it if you're feeling burned out on another game, or if you have 5 hours to spare. If you like metroidvanias, or specifically you enjoyed Death's Door, this may be right up your ally.
I played it today! Solid game, though. The camera movement was a bit frustrating, and being able to use abilities to be immune to boss moves was strange.
Played this game and actually loved the combat as it was a break from stressful fps games ive been playing recently (such as nightfall strikes in Destiny 2). A short sweet game I 100 percented in one sitting. Fun and a thourough recommendation.
Why are some of the models voxel-based, but others don't appear to be? It kind of gives the impression that they just couldn't decide which style to go with. Is there some in-game justification? Like, do the voxel creatures come from a dimension where everything's voxel-based, or something?
I guess it's just one tool in their toolkit. The overall aesthetic looks like storybook fairy tale fantasy, and so voxel-based graphics help, but overdoing it would look too much like the theme is video game instead.
the thing is. gaming community ignores those kind of games when it comes from XBOX stable but when SONY release this kind of game THEN ITS AMAZING. Same happened with PSYCHONAUTS2
I liked the game overall, but my god was it short. It's replay value is pretty much non existent, unless you're one of those "I must get everything" types. If Mcgees Alice series (from waay back) was horror/slasher, then I'd say this was a light fantasy Alice in Wonderland.
What I'm seeing from your review, an action RPG that isn't too long or too difficult for it's target audience, young kids. It's like Riverbond, which is Minecraft Dungeons for even younger kids. Not too difficult, not to brain taxing, and I think it's great that there are games that can get younger kids hooked without being a mountain for them to climb.
Perfect for Game Pass, simple combat system and puzzles. Easy to complete in a day or two with full achievements. Looks great and runs well on my Series S. Much better than Redfall!
Wait, WHAT!? THREE TO FOUR HOURS!? I mean, I'm all for games to be a condensed yet weighty experience but HOT DAMN! That's way too fast for an action RPG!
@@wererat42 well as someone with a full-time job AND a couple of side gigs to make ends meet, I still say it's a bit too short for my hard-earned cash.
Sounds like a good game for a younger audience. Or for those of us who don't like getting their scrotum hammered into a pancake by Dark S- sorry, Elden Ring.
Yeah, the gameplay was fun for me, I didn't mind that it was too repetitive at times. But the game is short and easy, and not much thought has been put into the puzzles and the exploration quests. The voxel art is gorgeous while the soundrack is a mixed bag for me: some tunes sound too generic, specially some of the first ones, and others are really good.
This was one of the titles that stuck out to me last showcase and it's a game that can be beaten in one sitting. I feel stupid for getting my hopes up for this.
Agreed. I thought the game had a lot of potential and the graphics looked stunning but the combat and rushed feeling of talking to everyone and getting menial quests dumped on you rapidly left a lot to be desired. A game for young kids for sure which is probably what they were going for. I still think someone could create a masterpiece in that same art style.
I also stuck this on a watch-list after the showcase because i was very much intrigued. And i wouldn't care if it's short (supergiant games can easily be single-sitting games), but this seems a little....less than what I was hoping for. Gorgeous, but shallow :/
I've played about 80% of the game on Game Pass, will finish it tomorrow. It's okay. If you're like me and you can enjoy very simple games, you'll like it. It's piss easy though. Normal enemies don't really attack you. Also, the visuals get really blurry when you move, and when you stop, it takes couple seconds for the image to become clear again. And you can't turn any sort of motion blur off from the settings.
Looks cool. It's not a voxel game, though. It's just a 3D game. Minecraft wasn't a voxel game either, but it at least had part of the idea. I wish we had more actual voxel-based games. It could be replace polygons...When we have a ton more CPU and GPU power.
Kinda short for a game that doesn't seem to be satisfying and with a price tag of $24 USD? Probably no real replay value either, so something to get on sale if you don't have gamepass.
The art style is wierd to me. Like why is some of it voxels and some is just regular models and textures? Maybe there is a story reason for it but watching it like this, it just looks like the devs could not decide on one artstyle and I would prefer that the picked one of the two.
It was based on Alice in Wonderland. If McGees Alice series (from back in the day) was horror/slasher, then this version of Alice in Wonderland is more light fantasy.
@@Harrison11106 Yeah but that doesn't explain the mix of voxel graphics and non-voxel graphics. It just seems like it would be better to pick voxels or not voxels. But maybe it's an artistic choice that just doesn't work for me.
I’m so happy to see someone else complain about this issue because for me it’s the biggest issue even though I haven’t seen a single person complain about it until now. It’s most problematic in the mushroom area where hardly anything is “voxel” and everything just looks like a reused unity asset, which completely takes me out of my immersion. I’ve literally seen dozens of 1-2 star reviews complaining about the camera inversion making the game unplayed which is total bs because you barely even have to move it since it’s fixed to your character. It really goes to show what an echo chamber the internet is and that people can’t come up with an original critique when a RUclipsr/reviewer hasn’t already stated their opinion.

As much as I'll never play this one, I appreciate The Escapist making a solid effort to rate games for all audiences (plus the honest reviews).

I played and finished it today, definitely an enjoyable journey despite its glaring shortcomings. I love the visuals and soundtrack.
