Great video! I followed the steps in your video, and after the 3rd pull, it started right up. I had replaced the filter and spark plug first, to see if it would start up, and it would not. I was forced to take the carburetor off, take it apart, which was easy, sprayed it with carb cleaner, put it back together ( I was able to use the same gaskets, which were in very good shape), and on the 3rd pull, the mower started right up. After that, it would start on the first pull every time. THANKS FOR THE HELP HANK!
I have run lawnmower mowers for over 50 years never had a problem getting my lawnmower to work and suprised with briggs and stratton good motor just a cheap carburetor attracted to a good lawnmower ! ?
I got a Troy bilt and poulan both Briggs engines for 5$ each. I thought the would be crap but the poulan is perfectly good and I had to change the carb on the Troy. They both work great

I 'm using my sister's mower that is just like this one. It started running rough and would die. When it started doing that, i took the air filter off of the carb and sprayed carb-cleaner in the carb.I put it back together and put seafoam with fresh gas in the gas tank. I cranked it up,cut my whole yard then i let it sit and idle for about 30min to an hour. I have not had any problems since cranking it.
hello hank you need to use a plastic bristle brush on a die grinder to get the gaskets off. they will cut the gasket right off without damaging the alum and they make the alum look brand new polished.
also what other thing could cause not to carbureta the gasoline well. I have changed the air filter (sq size rubber paper item) by the carburetor , the spark plug ( I didnt calibrate it what is the calibration of it), drained the gas tank and put new gasoline) and changed the micro switch which I broke by handling roughly). I cleaned the carburetor but didnt clean the pin hole facing sideways. I also didnt change the carburetor nor the motor oil. Thanks in advance.
Have you ever had a carb you couldn’t get to function? I have a troybuilt with a Honda motor on it. It only runs on the fuel you dump in the intake then quits. I’ve removed, disassembled and cleaned 3 times thinking I missed something. Bowl always has fuel in it. I guess I’ll just buy a new carb

Is there something horribly wrong with this modern series of engines? It starts and runs smooth as can be. People keep saying it absolutely must have a grass bag, but the one I got didn't have it with it.
I’ve had issues selling mowers without bags here. They take a lot longer to sell and I have to sell them at about half of what I can get for one with a bag. I’ve done in the past swap a good motor onto a good deck with a bag just to be able to get more money.
I personally could care less about a bag too, Idk why people want them so bad... mulching is actually better for the lawn than just dumping the grass in the trash
How much fuel stabilizer do you recommend for one of these mowers? I have one with the same style motor sitting in a hard to reach spot but I think i can reach the gas tank without moving a bunch of stuff
the KEY to these stabilizers IS to start and run the engine to GET that stabilized fuel INTO the carb.....sounds like you have it stored where you can NOT start it and RUN it for about 5-8 mins.
I'm house sitting and the owner has a troy bilt that won't work. I've had three people look at it, and each one tells me a different story. Two tell me there is a piece missing, another tells me the spring needs to be greased up and held down. I don't have a vehicle at my disposal...nor the money to spring for a new lawn mower for a house that isn't MINE. What do I do to fix the gosh darn thing?
I can't tell. Two people have told me its unrepairable, one of them was drunk at the time. The third person tried to explain that something holding the spring down was missing and it wasn't given the correct oil. Is there a way I can share photos securely? This is very frustrating as I have no vehicle and no mechanic to take a look at it.
well it will be cool to get them both going but i think it was the toro the one you said will cost some cash to get going but you dont come across them alot and will be something nice to have around
its not troy bilt, its the garbage briggs motors they make now, assuming you have the newest style they offer.. tb sells mowers with honda GCV's on them, I for sure recommend them over the new briggs
Hank's Small Engine Repair I have a Troy Bilt with the Honda, many more carb problems than the Briggs I have owned in the past. I have read many reviews by Honda owners about how fussy these motors are. Changing spark plugs can solve problems, changing oil can improve performance, etc. The Briggs I have owned all have the primer bulb, so they are ten years plus old. Too be honest, they run much better than this Honda that I own. I am not sold on Honda yet! I think they are very over rated.

I have the exact same mower and it takes me like 15 pulls to get it to turn on....gonna try cleaning the carb like this one to get it to be a 1 puller
Update- didnt work. Still takes 20 yanks. Took the muffler off, and it starts eventually. But not running good. Wouldnt buy again.

What size socket did you need to remove the spark plug? Have exact same mower and think ill be needing to do the same to get it running again.

If you are looking for engine parts the model number for the engine is stamped on the side of the recoil cover usually next to the exhaust.

Just measure it out on the bottle , 'make sure to follow directions the amount can vary depending on brand.
