I bought an earlier version of this lawn mower at a yard sale years ago. I didn't have anywhere to store for a long time, so it spent winters out in the snow. Still started every spring. Great video.
All I can say is thank you!!! You saved me a couple hundred dollars as I recycled my neighbor's used lawn mover because "IT DIDN"T WORK" so I could have it for free. Took me 20 minutes to fix and I already cut my new grass I layed down as sod a few weeks ago!!! GREAT VIDEO!!!!!
Finally got mine ok again after 3 attempts , after service sudden stop got a lump of soot in the petrol supply channel ,broke it up with piano wire through through pick up tube ,Carby fluid flush then mouth test all clear again, put back no good had a leak at gasket , pull apart again, oh ! damn missed the bolt hole in the diaphragm had caused folded up one way valve straighten up re assemble never misses a beat now. Auto choke model tip , I found gluing the long spiral spring to the diaphragm useful.
I've found it is better to test the prime prior to reinstalling. 9 rebuilds work just as you have shown, then there is one that needs a new carburetor. Keep up the good work.
This video is very informative. However the cause of my problem was something else. My mower suddenly lost power and started surging from almost stall to half speed. After looking at repair videos I took it apart. When removing the carb I noticed that the intake pipe from the carb to the engine block was loose. There are 2 bolts holding that pipe on the motor and these were slack enough to allow air leakage and spoil the fuel/air mixture. Tightened them up and it runs like new.
The governor spring should have been removed at 1:20 before removing the tank/carburetor from the engine. That spring looks like it's been abused and is in bad shape. If the spring gets stretched, the engine will run slower than design speed and will produce less power; the only fix for that is to replace the spring. I stretched the spring on a Briggs & Stratton engine by accident recently when I ran the mower into a bush and a branch hit it. The mower barely ran until I replaced the spring. Better mowers put a shroud over the area to prevent this.
FWIW this is a pulsa prime carb, pulsa jet on the vertical shaft engines had an automatic choke and a mixture adjustment needle instead of a primer bulb and fixed jet. There was also the vacu jet which didn't have a fuel pump diaphragm.
SOTHICK RICK His point was that the guy named the carb incorrectly.. may not seem like a big deal to you.. But when the specific carb's name is in the title and incorrect.. yeah..it matters!
My B&S would also start with a prime, then die. Tried pressing the primer to keep it running and after about 2-3 minutes of that, she started to run right again without the primer. First I took off the carb to check the diaphragm and it looked fine. I decided not to buy it for fear it wasn't the problem. Put it back together after a clean out and it still did the same thing. Then I read a guy's thread who said he did the bulb thing and it worked for him so I decided it couldn't hurt to try and behold, it worked. Glad I didn't buy the diaphragm.
mon0railbredpig No, did nothing to the primer setup, just used it to keep it running long enough for it to spit out whatever was clogging it. Worked great for a while, until I decided to buy a new one. Bought an electric instead, one less motor to keep running.
good video, you can also pop that pick up jet out that is behind that screen and clean it out better as well as the cavity it sits in, i used a tiny flat blade. i use welding tip cleaners to clean out those ports as well as spray carb cleaner and shop air. i also like your take on fuel in tanks, you never know and it eliminates one possible issue by just replacing old fuel.
Get 2 air cleaner screws and cut off the tops. Use them as guides to install the diaphragm. The soft gasket goes on the bottom. The hard goes against the carburetor. The governor tang adjusts the governed speed. There is a special tool to replace the primer. If the carburetor still acts up, replace the carburetor. Replace the governor spring. It's loose. There is a special oil change tool from Amazon to change the oil.
This is a good video, however for all who look and are reading .. the short answer is the plastic carb base warps.. This is most likely the real culprit.. The carb is plastic of course and warps slightly at the gasket side, the large hole side(the side by the large hole), between where the screws go through, not the tank. place a straightedge across the screw holes and you may likely see daylight. apply a thin layer of silicone sealant that is gasoline resistant and the gasket and that should most likely help the problem in the long run. Put it together, but don't tighten the screws all the way until 24 hours later to let the sealant to set.
Great video! I was able to get my 12 year-old Murray running again. It still runs a bit rough, but at least it runs. Question: I replaced the primer bulb with a new one that has a tiny hole in the bulb. I know it's designed that way, but why didn't my old one have a hole? I hate that I get gas on my primer finger, but I guess it's a small price to pay for not having to borrow my friend's mower anymore. Thanks!
If anyone has this engine and it surges and wont run smooth and right, especially if a new gasket set has been put on , these plastic carburetors warp on the engine side mounting surface and either have to be replaced or you can sand that mounting side down as flat as possible and add SEAL ALL Sealant or a PERMATEX gas resistant sealant to the machined surfaces when putting a new gasket on and a tiny smear on the gaskets also. SEAL ALL sealant >>(resistant to gasoline, oil, paint thinner, and most solvents. Seal-All is also water resistant immediately upon application Sets in 2-3 minutes. Fully cures in 2-6 hours) The gaskets can be bought at most major car parts stores--eBay also for under $5
Doesn't have to be "Hercules Tight", I like that term. Got me a Murray 22" with a 4.6 Briggs and Stratton. I'm going to do the same Carb' overhaul as well. Thank for posting...
I have the exact same carb but with 2 springs. I am not sure how the springs connect, that's why I'm here. Will do a thorough cleaning when I get the chance
I have two lawnmowers, (both B&S 3.75 engines) one starts then dies right away, the other will start if I pour some gas directly in the carb and it will stay running but surges. I assume they both need new diaphragms, or at least the carb cleaned out. I had watched about 10 videos and this one is the best! Thanks a lot! I'll do this to both tomorrow and let you know how it goes. Otherwise any other suggestions to what I mentioned on either? Thank you again!
No it's not. Just a hobby that I was interested in and read up on. I wish I had some formal training in it. I'm self taught, but eager to learn more about it. Thanks for watching.
I have one of these but the plastic thing that the linkage attaches to broke..can I order a new one or just order a new carb..and if I need a new carb do you know the name or number on it.. thank you. love this channel
That ones a "pulsa-prime" carb due to it having a primer bulb, the pulsa-jet has an automatic choke and no primer bulb. I have a pulsa-prime engine also, after 28 years finally had to rebuild the carb, new diaphram, primer bulb, primer check valve etc and it runs like new again.
hi .. I got this same engine. its not getting gas and the prime bulb is wrecked. I noticed the tank was brown with a sludge.. just horrible ethanol crap. I cleaned everything. when the diaphragm gets old, do they just get small leaks? and is this why engine is not getting gas? thanks !!
Thanks a lot , that surely , save me some money , I just strip down clean and wash tank leave to dry out , and i'm , running as new . Found the parts , but they were looking good. Thanks again.
Hi, Working on the pulsa jet carb from a Briggs mod 10T802-0776B1 engine. Customer said was leaking gas around the carb. I installed new gasket and diaphragm but when I pushed in on the primer bulb, gas came out of a small port in the side of the carb facing the fuel fill cap. I pushed in what appeared to be a small BB but now, when I pushed in the primer bulb, it does not come back out. I can send picture of port if you can give me an address. This is a new one to me, any suggestions? Thanks Tony Port Hadlock, WA
+Erik Whitford You know, I don't think I would. Using these for agitators is a great idea. So leave one or two in there and let 'em agitate. Maybe less crud will accumulate in the tank. I'm going to try it and see.
Hi doublewide6, the lawnmower I have has the same setup, but when I was looking at my parts list for my correct diaphragm part number, I noticed that there is a seat-inlet, Where is that seat located? Thank You
+Bradley Miller I know it's 4 months ago, but, what the heck. For this carb, it goes to the primer bulb. For bowl carbs with a needle and seat, it's the seat.
+Know How You need a new bulb, sounds like. If you've never done this, there are probably videos, but the bulb is retained by a metal ring at the base, you can hardly see it. Work that out of there and the bulb will come out. The new one will go in easier than the old one came out.
+Know How One other thing. If you mean a hole in the top of the bulb, it's supposed to be there, but only for air primer carbs. I was thinking of a hole due to deterioration. For air primer carbs the hole is designed in, it vents the bulb. If you have gas coming out of there, it's carb cleaning time, and probably a rebuild.

You can also use paper towels, long straight needle nose or forceps to wipe it dry/clean.
Thanks for this really clear video - helped me get my mower working again.

thanks to this video, I realized the importance of that damn carburetor.
Again thanks for the in depth video
Excellent video. You explained things very well. Thank you. I learned a lot.
Thank you for the video. My old mower is up and running again!
not sure if anyone gives a shit but last night I hacked my friends Instagram account using Instaplekt. Find it on google xD
The round black o ring on top of the carbueretor, do you need it? because ours is missing.

best carbs going for mower's great info. stick with what you know and repeat.
great vid....much better than the other videos I watched...helped me a lot.
i replace the diaphragm every season. even after that they stretch, if kept in good order they last forever
When I reduild one of those carbs , I always replace both the diaphragm ,and gasket
Thanks a lot , that surely , save me some money , I just strip down clean and wash tank leave to dry out , and i'm , running as new . Found the parts , but they were looking good. Thanks again.
this video helped me out quite a bit. awesome stuff. thanks for posting

+Anthony F. “Tony” De Leo Speaking of "seat-inlet"...
I Find a lawnmover today on a yunk yard its a stiga tornado and i gonna Do this to the gas tank
Try uding apple cider vibegar to clean metal tanks, drain it and blow it dry with air or let it air dry.
does anyone know with certainty what the exact rpm should be when the engine is running properly?
Now if I could only get the small engine parts store to stay open past 12:00 noon, I'd be just fine.
nice work you save my lawnmower ty very much
did you take the nut out of the gas tank?
your video was helpful
+Erik Whitford You know, I don't think I would. Using these for agitators is a great idea. So leave one or two in there and let 'em agitate. Maybe less crud will accumulate in the tank. I'm going to try it and see.
Anyone have the part number for the GOVERNOR SPRING in this video? Thanks
Was looking for a vid with the same linkage!
Hi mate thanks a million I thought I was in to buying a new mower
Apparently I did't see the spring reinstall under the gasket or diaphragm. Otherwise good information. Please show the spring install.
How do I fix it if primer bulb doesn't pump out any gas? If I press the bulb enough, gas comes out of hole in bulb.

he did not remove the main jet and clean its under the screen pops out with a mini screwdriver
Very few of These "How to" Videos do remove the Main Jet on These Pulsa Prime Carbs for Cleaning .....
Thanks... helpful video, regards
Thought these had 2 governor springs?????
thanks it fixed my problem!
i have new tank and carb. it still does'nt start.
Very helpful. Thank you.
Thanks a ton for this!
Great Video!!! Thanks!!
thanks. great job.
I tried putting my linkage back on an broke my plastic , uggghhh! Now, New carb! Why don't they make hat piece metal?
