    PATRAS BUKHARI
Prof. Ahmad Shah Bukhari, widely acclaimed by his pen name Patras Bokhari, stands as an illustrious figure in the realms of Urdu literature, education, broadcasting, and international diplomacy. Born on October 1, 1898, in Peshawar, Pakistan, he embodied a multifaceted persona that left an indelible mark on various domains.
The lineage of Prof. Bukhari traced back to a Kashmiri family, whose roots extended to Bukhara before settling in Peshawar. His early education began in the heart of his birthplace, receiving formative years of learning. Later, he continued his educational journey at Edwardes Mission School in Peshawar, subsequently moving to Lahore, where he pursued English literature at Government College.
Having excelled in his studies, Prof. Bukhari's academic prowess shone as he earned his Master's degree in English with distinction and swiftly transitioned into the role of a lecturer at Government College. This marked the onset of his creative period, characterized by his bilingual excellence, which he nurtured through translating notable English works into Urdu. His affinity for languages extended to English, which he mastered with equal finesse as he did with Urdu.
Continuing his educational journey, Prof. Bukhari embarked on a transformative phase in the United Kingdom. At Emmanuel College, Cambridge, he pursued his Tripos in English, earning a first-class degree and establishing himself as a senior scholar. This academic success solidified his place as the second South Asian student to achieve such a distinction.
Returning to Lahore, Prof. Bukhari's teaching career at Government College soared to prominence, fostering generations of students who would later become influential figures themselves. His influence extended beyond academia, as he assumed significant roles in broadcasting, including Director General of All India Radio in Delhi and Principal of Government College, Lahore.
His expertise and reputation eventually led him to serve on the international stage as Pakistan's envoy to the United Nations. Prof. Bukhari's diplomatic contributions were characterized by dedication and foresight. Notably, he advocated passionately for the importance of UNICEF in developing countries, underscoring its significance even as discussions of its closure arose.
His accomplishments were not confined to the world of academia and diplomacy alone. Prof. Bukhari's literary legacy shone through his notable collection of essays titled "Patras Kay Mazameen," published in 1927. This collection remains a cornerstone of Urdu humor writings, demonstrating his ability to resonate with readers across time. His engagements with luminaries like Allama Iqbal enriched his intellectual landscape, often resulting in thought-provoking debates that influenced even Iqbal's own work.
Prof. Ahmad Shah Bukhari's contributions to the world stage were celebrated by peers and leaders alike. His role as a diplomat was highlighted by Ralph J. Bunche, who acknowledged Prof. Bukhari's leadership, philosophical insight, and dedication to advancing the ideals of the United Nations. Despite his passing on December 5, 1958, his legacy endures through the Bokhari English Prize at Emmanuel College and through honors such as the Hilal-e-Imtiaz, Pakistan's second-highest civilian award.
In recognition of his multifaceted contributions, Patras Bokhari's name resonates in the annals of literature, education, broadcasting, and international diplomacy. His journey from Peshawar to the global stage serves as an inspirational testament to the power of intellect, empathy, and the pursuit of excellence across diverse fields.
