The quake’s epicentre was located in waters about 25km (15.5 miles) south of the eastern county of Hualien and 138km (86 miles) from Taipei, according to Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau. Still amazes me how the tallest building in Taiwan barely even swivelled from the earthquake because of the massive counter-weight that was built in the inside of it.
Taiwan is lucky they actually build decent buildings.

My wife was scared when it happened, she remembered 25 years ago and never felt something so big since. She had an appointment at the hospital that day, and the multiple aftershocks, people were just chilling in the hospital while the whole building was shaking, carrying on with work.
It's scary to see the buildings lopsided. Thoughts with all those affected by this; I hope Taiwan will recover quickly.

Even tho this is a bigger one, as Taiwanese we tend to experience earthquakes probably once a year. A big one every 5 years or so.. the building standard also significantly improved since the major earthquake 25 years ago.

It's sad but I have a lot of respect for the strong building laws in Taiwan.......Yes,buildings were leaning after the earthquake but in Turkeyi in the most recent earthquake buildings just completely crumbled.
Turkey had 7,8 earthquake and then just 9 hours later 7,6 second tremor. It was a double disaster. Sooo much more destructive than this one. And Taiwan earthquake happened under the sea, away from the coast. However, Turkey earthquake occured just on land which means just under people’s feet. And it was very shallow. Buildings in Turkey not just weak as everyone presume. Yes we have bad old stock buildings too. But also there are lots of historical buildings that you can not just replace. Even a 2000 year old Roman castle collapsed. Old churches, mosques. Many of them collapsed😢
@@yfk1989Agree with this. Ppl tend to forget that epicenter location plays a big role for how destructive the earthquake is, not only the magnitude value.

Probably no need, even if there is it would probably just be more of a show of support instead of having actual purpose. I live in taipei so I don't fully know the situation in hualien but taiwans infrastructure is very earthquake proof. I think less than 5 buildings collapsed, the only deaths is coming from the landslides. Just an assumption but I think taiwan probably has enough resources/staff to cover the situation by themselves. Would still be nice to see aid tho.

I agree tho, but not for the reason of the quake. The island, especially the eastern part, is simply not safe. Lots of kidnapping and illegal stuff going on.
Lol, Taiwan is probably the safest place you could live. People here are incredibly friendly and more honest than most places. The earthquake was terrifying, but most buildings are fine. Source: I live here and have for 15 years in a building that is still standing and has been since before I was born.
No point buying a house in Japan, USA, France, Australia, New Zealand etc. They are also facing natural disaster...

😨No warning was issued for the 7.2 strong earthquake, and Taiwanese people were strongly dissatisfied.
Today, a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 occurred in Taiwan, but no "national-level" earthquake warning was received.
Taiwanese people are very dissatisfied.
They criticized that before the election last year, gov sent three "national-level" warning text messages for the China planned satellite launch, but now that a strong earthquake has occurred, did not receive warning at all.
They asked "Executive Chairman" Chen Jianren to explain and review the relevant systems.
Last year, when the mainland had already announced the launch of a satellite, it was able to issue two "national" warnings.
However, this major earthquake failed to notify the public in time.
A strong earthquake in eastern Taiwan this morning (3rd) caused a serious rockfall on the Su-Hua Highway.
The rocks hit a large truck that happened to be passing by.
Unfortunately, the driver of the vehicle died on the spot.
If he receive warning , this may not happen.
