For those of you who don't know what this song is based on. It's based on a old movie called Johnny Got His Gun. Where a soldier losses his arms, legs, nose, eyes and mouth. He is trapped in his body for the rest of his life. Since he has no mouth. He can't communicate with the others around. While he is begging for death. Praying to God to wake him up. You can see small parts of the movie in the music video for One
Exactly,Johnny Got His Gun was an anti-military novel published in 1939 by Dalton Trumbo, the same author of the novel directed and wrote the screenplay for the 1971 film of the same name starring byTimothy Bottoms.

This was my dad’s favorite song. Quickly became mine at a very young age. He passed unexpectedly 5 years ago and this is the song I chose to play at his funeral.. His dad will be walking me down the aisle to the instrumental version of this song at the end of the year. The emotions it will bring are good, bad, sad.. happy 🖤
I just love 2:35 when James says “just like a wartime novelty” and Lars does that triple snare hit. It’s just fits so damn nicely right there. Love it!
If you've ever been intubated while conscious then then you know one aspect of what this feels like. I remember only being able to blink and move my eyes, but nothing else, from the medication they gave me. My father was above me while I was lying in the hospital bed. He touched the tube that was going down my throat and inadvertently moved it in such a way as to cause severe panic inducing pain in my throat. I could not let anyone know that something was wrong. All I could do was flutter my eyes back and forth and blink as fast as possible but it made no difference. He, nor the doctor present, had any idea that I was in complete distress. I remember being furious that beforehand I had been in a slightly peaceful state and then with one motion, my father put me in hell. He just gave me a sad smile as I was panicking in my mind and then he walked away.
That is straight up nightmare fuel. I hope you’re doing alright these days.

This song sings to me personaly when i was Fucked up shattered face in a coma for 3 1/2 weeks yet still concious of the passage of time. Every prick every small taste of blood and steel. The horrible dream i cant wake up from. I can hear voices i can feel touch, but cant react to it in any way. The Living hell described is just that. And words nor song, can realize all your greatest fears come to life. You want to scream, but your only screaming on the inside, noone can hear you.

First metal song i ever heard when i was a kid,i think 7 years old.Resonated with me instantly even if i could not understand what was said(non-english speaker). I would sing it even if i didn't know the lyrics :D . Thank god i heard it at such a young age and shaped my musical tastes for the better for the future.

This song, horrifyingly, is about an American soldier in ww1, hit by a landmine, and miraculously surviving. He wakes up in a clinic, unable to see, he attempts to speak, but finds out his vocal cords were singed, and is thus rendered mute, and has lost all limbs. He attempts to communicate through Morse code, and amazingly, they understand him. He asks to be killed, but, to his horror, the doctors are keeping him alive as a guinea pig, to be tested on and kept alive for the rest of his life, trapped in his body. As he attempts to remain sane, his mind drifts through fantasy and reality, memories, dreams, and even nightmares. All he can do is chant "kill me" for the rest of his life.
