Something BIG Has Changed on the Front Lines in Ukraine

  • Published on Mar 7, 2026
  • The nature of Russia's war against Ukraine is changing. Russia ability to conduct offensives against Ukrainian positions is slowing, allowing Ukraine to build up a surplus of material. That in turn has led to a surprising development - Ukraine is increasingly going on the offensive. In this video, I look at the latest updates in the Ukraine War, including how drones continue to change the nature of the battlefield and how Ukraine continues to put more pressure on Russia than ever before.

      Both lead to low morale which is the most lethal to an army. These days you are seeing russians surrender to wounded Ukrainian soldiers they captured..russians dont want to fight.

    • @tessjuel
      @tessjuel 22 days ago +13

      @ouicestbien It's not even freezing weather in Ukraine right now. It's around 0C, give or take a degree or two. We have a very mild winter this year.

      @tessjuel 0C wet conditions are much more miserable, and deadly than dry weather at minus 10C. The lethality curve for temperature has a pretty big bump in the middle.

    Offensive by drone looks very like an alternative (cheaper and more flexible) version of the US air offensive concept.

    • @colingenge9999
      @colingenge9999 22 days ago +4

      American mega spending on their military will become increasingly obsolete as the Ukrainians are learning on their battlefield of today how the wars will be fought tomorrow. America would do well to supply Ukraine with as much support as possible to get this war over and done with as quickly as possible because on their current trajectory they are setting themselves up to be increasingly toothless in a world that they increasingly don’t understand.

    • @mathewferstl7042
      @mathewferstl7042 22 days ago +4

      @colingenge9999 american and western air power doctrine is actually more effective than it has ever been. Air power is about taking out C3, logistics, training, and strategic weapons, this chokes the forces on the front lines allowing a much smaller land force to overwhelm and actually utilise the enemies larger force size against themselves (because their larger size means they are more reliant on a now non-existant supply line). People have been saying air power and western docterine is dead for decades but that assertion is consistently disproven time and time again. People have a short memory, the 12 day war reaffirmed this position.

    • @gc99289
      @gc99289 22 days ago

      It's pure cope.
      You're not "offensive by anything" without infantry that has to hold positions. Which Ukros deeply lack.
      This is another PR stunt before all is lost.

    • @pascalmartin1891
      @pascalmartin1891 22 days ago +2

      @gc99289 the air offensive concept is a sequence of actions, such as suppression of air defense, then destruction of ground defense. Only then the ground offensive takes place. It does not replace the ground offensive, it precedes it.
      Only in some relatively few cases has the US used air offensive alone. Typically because it did not want to send in ground troops in the first place. That is a different problem.

    • @erikswanson5753
      @erikswanson5753 22 days ago +3

      This is why the Ukrainian offensive in spring of 23 stalled. They didn't have the air coverage. This was before the heavy use of drones we see now. They were still depending on WWII tactics.

      @Magnum_G.I I assume you meant to say Russia destroyed itself by attacking Ukraine? Because that's how it looks at the moment. Ukraine will be closely tied to Europe, likely both EU and NATO member once the dust settles. Even without Ukraine, NATO has already doubled its border with Russia and increased their defensive budgets significantly. Russia, on the other hand, is weaker than ever and effectively at the mercy of China. The economic realities once the war ends, might well cause a full collapse.
      So, in the end, Russia will have destroyed itself from yet another dictator fabricating threats that did not exist. But hey, perhaps after this they'll rise again as a democracy. That would be nice now that America looks like it's settling in to take Russia's place at the dictators' holiday retreat.

      I am pro-Ukrainian, but Paul is not accurate with his assessment at all. According to the ISW (which holds a pro-west bias) "Russian milbloggers initially portrayed [new Ukrainian] counterattacks as a broader Ukrainian “counteroffensive,” but Ukrainian military sources and some Russian milbloggers have since indicated that the Ukrainian counterattacks are limited in scale and span." Also, if you look at DeepStateMap you will see the same of what we've seen the last 3 years -- slow Russian progress at the expense of high casualties on both sides, with Russian casualties being higher, but arguably similar to Ukrainian casualties per capita.

    "If regular army is not wining - it is loosing. If Partisans are not loosing they are wining" - Gen. Westmoreland, Who was commander in chief of US Army in Vietnam said this great truth. The same can be said about war in Ukraine. If Russia is not wining, it is loosing, if Ukraine is not loosing it is wining. It was like that aslo in Afghanistan. The Afghan People managed to survive 10 years of war of attrition with The Mighty Soviet Union - and finally it was the Soviets who had to withdraw from the country. The same is going to be in Ukraine - particularly that Ukraine is much bigger and stronger than Afghanistan and is having much biger sdupport from its friends. Slava Ukreaini !!! One of the most spurious arguments that I've been hearing since the war started was that we needed to capitulate to Russia to shorten the war and save Ukrainian lives. At first it was anti-American leftists like Noam Chomsky saying these things out of pure sanctimony. Then it was Donald Trump and the far right making this argument out of pure bad faith.
    These idiots had it exactly backwards. The vast majority of invasions and occupations eventually fail, the fact that we attempted it is the only reason Americans soured on foreign intervention in the first place. We tried to protect a capitalist regime in Vietnam, not understanding that several centuries of often brutal foreign rule had conditioned them to resist our intervention as if the fate of the universe depended on it.. We offered humanistic secularism to the medieval tribal people of Afghanistan. This was unnatural and like a Crocodile's preternatural immune system their fanatical warrior cultures simply outlasted our willingness to stay.
    What pacifists, America firsters and to some extent even the Biden administration failed to notice was that for once, the people willing to endure hardship 'til the bitter end were the ones fighting to join our team.
    Wars of liberation are fundamentally different from wars of occupation.
    If we had intervened forcefully from the start this would have gone the same way as the liberation of Kuwait in Desert Storm, a quick, vindicating, lopsided victory with American casualties you could count on your fingers. This would have been made all the more glorious by the fact that Ukraine (unlike Kuwait) is actually a country worth fighting for. Ukrainians embody the values we only pretend to believe in.
    Our failure to recognize this home field advantage made us take the road of maximum pain for Ukraine. This war will take decades when it should have taken months. Every American should feel deeply ashamed of that.
    Ukrainians will endure nevertheless. Their victory is inevitable even though it won't be quick.
    I've got to wonder, did Trump and Chomsky co-ordinate their bogus talking points in between "Massages" at Epstein's place?

    • @petercroft9895

      Well written. I am no fan of Taco, but consider this
      a) Taco has forced the Eu to put their money where their hot air is, they have been promising to up military spending for 10yrs, Nothing until now when they are panicking.
      b) After the failure of this SMO Putin is in a real corner. When this 'SMO' ends he will be facing an open 5th floor window. Unless he can take Kiev and most of the rest of Ukr. And even then it will be guerrilla warfare. The Red Army only managed to crush Ukr partisans 8yrs after the end of WW2.
      c) Maybe Trump is not appealing to Putin, but to his inner circle and oligarchs who want to save their own skins. Trump appears to be reasonable, Putin is intransigent! The oligarchs want to end this conflict to get back to their Western loot.
      d) Don't beat yourself up about US support, the USA saved Eu in WW1, 2 and ended the Cold War. You have supported Ukr, despite Taco's words.
      e) Look at Ukr elections 1991-2020. A 50-50 split between pro Western and pro-Russ. That has totally changed, even Russ speakers (Ukr voted 90% for independence in 1991) now want nothing do do with Russ. A similar pattern was in Ireland in 1910-20.
      In the longer term Putin has achieved the destruction of Russia and the unification of the Ukr's
      Slava Ukraine and God Bless America,

      @Keepyourheadupalways That last line is tounge in cheek of course but It's ironic that they both make roughly the same argument about Ukraine. I think the common thread is that Chomsky hates America so much that he reflexively makes excuses for foreign autocrats and spreads propaganda to help them. (Orwell has some good quotes about people like him).
      Trump on the other hand simply likes autocrats, has spent his life doing business with them and wants to be one of them. If you look at how many hard core leftists have defected to Trump/Putin's side (Tulsi, RFK, I could name 20 others), I think there's indisputable evidence that horseshoe theory is real.

    I've seen a few videos of Russian POWs in the last week, they all looked like skin and bones, and most of them were wearing 4 or 5 layers of jackets and still shivering so much they had difficulty eating. It's truly nightmare stuff and you know within the Russian military there are constant battles between factions over supplies and who gets what. The fact we see so many russian soldiers publicly appealing for donations for basic equipment should be utterly humiliating for Putin, but he's so desperate he's got no choice.

      And a funny thing is that the shutdown of telegram will probably lead to a significant reduction in the donations reaching the frontlines.

      @kanojo1969 22 days ago

      @globetrottingtore.640 It's already happening, donations have slowed to a trickle. But they will set up alternatives, getting those donations is a life or death matter for these poor bastards.

      @kanojo1969bastards, yes. But I won't use the expression poor. The more they suffer, the better it is.
      Yes, Russia will do workarounds. They are actually good at doing workarounds. I just hope the telegram and starlink blackout will result in tangible positive results for the Ukrainian team.

      @globetrottingtore.640Soliciting domestic donations doesn't require realtime video and data, so fixes here would presumably have no effect on battlefield communications.

    Ukraine's gameafacation of drone kills was brilliant, allocating the best equipment or the newest equipment to the highest scorers. I have never doubted their ability to win this war as long as they continued to get the necessary supplies. It's been a long time since I had any heros, now I have an entire nation of them. I have also gained respect for Europe for keeping them supplied, and I am ashamed at how the United States has failed it's obligations to humanity.

    the clearest lesson from the Russian invasion of Ukraine is in command structure. the greatest weakness of authoritarian/totalitarian states is *paranoia*, which never allows any unauthorized thought among the generals. democratic states have civilian oversight and freewheeling generals focused on results.

    I've said from the beginning that ruxxia's centuries old tactic of using their own soldiers as "cannon fodder" and "meat waves" is solely designed to use up the enemy's ammunition. That is a terrible thought to realize that the ruxxian government and Tinpoop deliberately use their own soldiers as targets just to use up the ammunition of the enemy. And Rump invites the bloody, terrorist dictator to Alaska and gives him the red carpet treatment, while the US Congress sits MUTE. DISGUSTING!!!

    • @libertarianireland3239
      @libertarianireland3239 21 day ago

      Well if you've said that from the beginning you've been wrong since the beginning. No side uses their own soldiers as cannon fodder or meat waves. You don't do that if you want to win and obviously both sides want to win, so your point is nonsense. Ukraine have been particularly guilty of holding men in undefendable positions and sending in more men to get slaughtered in order to try to delay Russian advances so that is somewhat closer to your description of cannon fodder, but even then Zelensky can claim that he is sacrificing them because the delay is worth it in his mind. It's still terrible though.

    • @bluenetmarketing
      @bluenetmarketing 21 day ago

      @libertarianireland3239 You obviously do not have knowledge of the horrors of ruxxian history. It is a well known fact in ruxxian military history that they use their own soldiers as ammo targets to use up the enemy's ammunition. ruxxian psychology is not normal like yours and mine. Human life to the communist oppressors in ruxxia are not worth more than a jeep or a tank. Humans are just another tool to achieve their aims. They are a deadly dangerous and psychopathic culture based on hundreds of years of murdering and taking over their neighbors. How do you think ruxxia has become the largest country in the world? It wasn't by being "friendly." It was by brutal invasion and murder, the same plan the head chopping muslims have except the muslims are smarter and they take over countries from the inside through immigration and a massive large birthrate. Read about the Holodomor. Read about the horrors inflicted recently on the people of Chechnya and Georgia. Keep in mind that human shape does not guarantee safe or normal human.

    • @jcoker423

      @libertarianireland3239 Look at the history of Russia. They use their troops as cannon fodder. Except now they have a low birth rate.
