The AM dial cord was broken on this radio, and the FM one was very near to going the same way, so both had to be replaced. This has never been one of my favourite jobs in a restoration project, but after this experience, it now ranks as my absolute least fun part of the job.
As is typical, one issue doesn't come alone. The tuning capacitor was completely stuck, and things just went from bad to worse from there.
Anyway, nothing is insurmountable, so perseverance finally pays off.

    Hi Manuel.

  • @TrevorsBench

It's amazing how much stress a re-stringing can bring, good job!

  • @JonRig

Love it!!! Watching someone else's dial string torment from the comfort of the sofa is so very enjoyable!!! 😂 Made me feel much better given that my Satellit 6000 is still on the shelf waiting to be done. My day of reckoning will come when I am in the right mood!!! 😁That's a great tip on heating up the tuning condensor shaft to help release dried up grease. Very useful and not something that had occured to me. Thank you for that little gem!! Very much looking forward to the next one in the series on this. Great work, as always.

  • @techobaz55

Manuel, I really don't know how you kept your cool with that dial cord, I was so stressed just watching it, LOL !

  • @DavidTipton101

I thought you said you had a frozen tuna 🙄 What a crazy dial string run, the tension was palpable during the operation. That was good work on the diffuser and the radio worked. Good show Manuel 👍🙂

  • @tomj4506

I was a quite good tech BUT I could never do dial strings ! Its an art form that most never

  • @bofor3948

Of course we all like to see others suffering😂 Knit one Purl one😄But never doubted you would succeed. Not my favourite thing either, but it is very satisfying when you get it right. Nice work!

  • @retro_tech

Ah, don't we all love a dial cord restring? Well, at least we all love watching someone else do it... 😉

  • @ScottGrammer

I feel for you. I work on vintage audio gear for a living, and dial strings are a classic nightmare. Especially if the customer or someone else broke it, and you never got a chance to see how it was strung in the first place. And any time I work on a B&O product, the estimate automatically doubles.

  • @geirendre

If you really want to have fun restringing then I highly recommend the B&O Beomaster 1500.

  • @anandadesilva6558

Like I said once before, I love those dial stringing stuff! I always wanted to visit Portugal. So, line up all those sets and I will come do them for you in a couple of days. Don't even need any diagrams.

  • @TheEmbeddedHobbyist

Nice to see it coming along.

  • @giovannimai2717

Un bel lavoro ! Grazie per le bellissime lezioni pratiche per riparare le radio a valvole !

  • @EsotericArctos

I dislike restringing dials as well, but at the end of it, when it works how it should, there is still a kind of sense of satisfaction, and a small victory when I see it working with a nice, clean dial string :)

  • @xyredmax

Mr Chopstick, you made that look easy 😜

  • @tubeDude48

I feel your pain with dial strings!

  • @plunkervillerr1529

Prestretch the string, must be the answer to my 1960 Sultan. Oh, she sounds so good, what a pity.

  • @greengrayradio1394

The "Hopt" tuning capacitors, also used in radios from Tandberg and Radionette are well known here in Norway for their lube turning into glue. It's best to remove them, disassemble the tuning shaft in the bearing and do a thorough clean and re-lube. I have experienced they have seized again if not cleaned properly. And, sympathies with the dial string.. Definitely the job I undertake most hesitantly!

  • @josealeixes2861

Boa noite senhor Manoel ótimo trabalho parabéns …

  • @ralphj4012

Good, albeit slightly frustrating, progress. The original dial string looked like the cord used for pull light switches (the types found in bathrooms etc). You can't be a boy scout and a seamstress, oh, wait!
