      Bizarre that he works backwards from his conclusion and doesn't address the correlations between IQ and success (i.e; the average IQ of intellectually demanding professions such as physicists). Equally bizarre that he implies the IQ test is prejudiced against "the poor" and women, what IQ test is structured to provide better results to the affluent or the male? These points seem to almost defeat the cultural argument most individuals attempting to debunk IQ tests make. Has the guy ever taken an IQ test himself to see what kind of questions are asked? His argument vaguely reminds me of right-wingers who say Planned Parenthood is bad *today* because some of it's founders were eugenicists. This is simply a cut-and-dry ad hominem attack that is irrelevant to modern IQ testing.

    • @FabLoki
      @FabLoki 5 лет назад +3

      Yes exactly, for example on how capitalism requires cheap labor to function, and how racism and constant belittling of black people has legitimized and justified the use of quasi free workforce for centuries, giving the capitalists an unfair advantage and allowing them to accumulate much whealth in a relatively short period of time. Anti-racism would then need to be anti-capitalist because when addressing the issue of racism seriously, some of the policies would, purposefully or not, tackle social disparities, of which level of wages are an important part of. Capitalism has partially overcome this problem by outsourcing most of the cheap labor, that is why the Anti-racism and anti-capitalism struggles needs to put themselves at a worlwide level in the long run in my opinion.

      So, the best you comment you can make on a video concerning current race issues is one black man who the vast majority of people of colour don't agree with and who's entire career depended upon his acceptance into white institutions and your point is what? I LOVE how yt racists like yourself tell on themselves by only selectively considering the ideas of pickmes like Sowell and Cadence Owens, who have strong internalised racism and tend to enable the violence of white neocolonialism so long as they get a pat on the back and some dollars in their pocket. Funny how you only like Black thinkers who don't challenge your preconceptions or comfort at all. Funny how you seem to think people like Kendi are damaging 'the fabric of society' by advocating for equity, where as you don't seem to consider white domestic terrorist shoot ups and a damage to society. What a joke you are.

    Oh my God! So I took some feminism classes in college and I realized the kinds of sexists beliefs I had about women and even about myself. In order to feel like I had power in the world, I had adopted sexist attitudes so that, if I put other women below me in an attempt to be "one of the boys," maybe I could achieve a higher status even though I was a woman. Now don't get me wrong, my personality and thinking are very male, but that doesn't mean that I should degrade other women. The point of being against bigotry is that you let people be people, even if they do embody the classic stereotypes or not. I can't say that, as a feminist, I think women must be just like men or even that men are a monolith. All these ideas that we have about people in whatever group we put them in have narrowed what is acceptable behavior and it's not erasing that bigotry to insist that everyone purposely not fulfill any stereotype. This has a big impact upon women because there's the wife and mother role that's stereotypical, but it's not a rebellion to insist that women who want to do this never do so. It's not about erasing any one personality; it's about letting people be people, just like me, you, and all of us.

    The thing I have always found weird about this value placed on the darkness of someone's skin is that you'll have a racist going to the tanning bed or lying out in the sun... to get darker skin. Why should skin that needs the sun to darken be better than skin that's already dark? It seemed like the most absurd thing to me.
    I also have brown eyes and I considered getting green contacts. I never did it because they cost more than the regular contacts and then I found that contacts dry out my eyes too much. My mom has light eyes and she married a man with brown eyes because she thinks that darker eyes are nicer. In some ways, we always think that grass is greener on the other side but, if that's the case, we shouldn't be bigots against the people who were born with something that we have to work to get. It's just completely absurd.

    • @ASMRyouVEGANyet

      Completely agree. And skin that needs to have sun to get darker will more than likely develop melanoma due to tanning. Further shows that light skin isn't suited to be dark. What it comes down to is we all bleed red. No one is better or worse because of our genetic make up.

    Racism is a form of tribalism, that has existed long before capitalism. So has slavery.

    • @bloodbuddy7
      @bloodbuddy7 2 года назад +1

      Incorrect. What you are referring to (prejudice and tribalism) are distinct and separate from what is being discussed. Racism is directly related to the emergence of eugenics in the 20th century, which under the guise of 'science' put forward the idea of race as a fact (including the false idea that white people were more 'evolved', and other races more 'animal like') enabling the dehumanisation of non-white people for easier exploitation under capitalism. The repercussions of this ideology are still being dealt with today. The reason that it appears otherwise to you is that you have grown up in a world still informed and effected by racist power structures which encourage you to conflate prejudice with racism so as to make racism seem 'eternal' and not recognize the specifics of its functioning, the role of structural power, nor analyse your own part in the system, nor mount any significant resistance to it. I will say one thing about not doing any kind of art for the others who might take it in. Anyone who is not you can't have the same experiences as you. The only way to truly become a human community is for us to be able to take in the individuality and the humanity of others. If we create art in order to catch the attention of certain people, we are neither going to succeed in defining their interests in our arts nor of expressing the very reason why art is created. We all need to be able to see someone's soul in what they create so that we can see their humanity and we can learn things that we would never be able to learn otherwise in our current human forms.
    The most striking example for me, as a white person, is when we started to see instances of police brutality towards black people. Before I saw the beating of Rodney King when I was barely a teenager, I had heard some second or third hand reports from my black friends about how the police treated them. It's not that I didn't believe the stories, but when I saw the video of the police beating Rodney King for no good reason, it created this visceral anger in me because I know the police would never treat me that way. The point is that we need to seek out the art of other people because this is the only way to know what humanity is as a whole and how we are interacting with each other. This is the only way to create peace because once you can see other people as being your sisters and brothers in humanity, you can start to really be human yourself.

    The bottom line is that the people in charge rig the system so that they always look like they deserve to be ahead. What flows out of that are racist, sexism, ablism, bigotry against the poor, etc. because the goal of the elites is to create a system in which only their progeny will succeed and to try to convince everyone that the reason they maintain their power is because of merit, not unfair advantage. They have to make people think that it's our fault if we are poor and, by extension, that they deserve their wealth because they are superior. I love how Kendi hits the nail right on the head with this. The tactic of the elites is to keep the majority of us from calling out how unfair it all is and standing together by dividing those of us who they are subjugating. We have to come to realize that the ones subjugating us are ultimately the same ones subjugating nearly everyone else.

    Arguments sound more like opinion. Basically he is saying the history of these tests used within the context of their time invalidate the tool of standard tests of any kind today. These people are against any, any benchmarking. Why? They don't like their results.
    It is racist if I cannot compete on an equal level and never gave the same effort? Nevermind that Indians, Middle Easterners, and all East Asians excel. They just don't count. Don't even consider the fact that they take the test many times in a second language and STILL score higher.
    In other countries they have these tests BECAUSE they are fair. In America some say they are wrong because we don't like the outcome.
    Not saying the test should be everything, work ethic, drive, personal direction and luck play half. Standard testing is an important indicator, especially across schools and as a general indicator of... aptitude. If a student has straight As and scores 800 maybe they are not as capable as their school would like you to think. Maybe a student has Bs in a rigorous school but gets a 1200... We need to protect hardworking students from grade inflation.
    We need to fight this weakness and pandering to the children of our society. We need to examine outcomes objectively and look truth in the face.

We want what others have. One way for us to make our selves feel better is to point out some one else that we believe to be lesser. We are all animals living together. We fight over the scraps. Some one is always going to be on top. Until we practice the idea that all people are equal the cancer of racism will continue to grow.

They are more primal than we are. They know someone is different from them, but the racism comes from thinking someone is beneath you because of those differences.

    Slavery made a few white families extremely wealthy for a few generations over 150 years ago. The vast majority of Southern whites were not slaveholders, and in fact resented the institution of slavery. It's just silly to think that modern African Americans are owed any sort of money by modern whites. Whatever wealth was generated from slavery for whites was destroyed during the Civil War. Whatever whites owed blacks after that was paid for in the form of welfare. Today, the average American black is wealthier than the average white globally, and they enjoy numerous unique institutional privileges. Anyone seriously advocating black reparations is simply an anti-white racist.

    As with any argumentative feud, we must start by acknowledging facts not only wholesale denouncing everything on a single argument. Racism is real but it is our duty to demonstrably and factually show where and how it exists. As with feminism it doesn't suffice to say "because there are power inequalities across cultural collectives and sexes therefore there is racism and sexism on every difference"
    We should be brave and assume the hard work of meticulously finding the concrete instances in which racism works, utlining its cultural, psychological, political and economic incentives. Moral considerations are necessary but after we do the analytic and descriptive work.
    Otherwise we play into the hands of this racist dynamics.

Are you familiar with the phenomena called "passing", where people who have parents who are not classified as "white" actually pass for white??? This is the fundamental problem, my son will be classified as BLACK as soon as he comes out of the womb, that designation had NOTHING to do with any particular tribe, heritage, country, language nor culture. @@insidejah9293 Name a single line where I affirmed "race" exists. Precisely I wrote "racism" So your whole premise is wrong. Sorry, try again.
      So no, it's not MY problem, it's YOURS. If you can't read and try to project your own ignorance. BTW I have always criticised why descendants from the latter African forced migration (we are all Africans and indeed our hyplogroups are all mixed) still construct a main identity around "blackness". "Black caucaus", "Black panthers", "Black lives matters". In East Timor I dated an African girl from Eritrea that shares more of her hyplogroup with Europe than with Congo. Races still do not exist, I have said and written this for ages.
      It is a different thing, however, to affirm that different collectives don't have genetic differences. Asians are smarter, and apparently. You may say "Asians" are not a race, they are an arbitrary cathegorisation, but it is not true to say there are abstract, non-precise spheres of genetic concentration. We are all Africans, we had different migration paths, but it is naive and pointless to deny a priori the possibility of differences. E.g. subsharan collectives (again, no "race") seem to have a few physiological differences (muscles and ligaments) that, while marginal, still account for marginal differences that make them better athletes.
      Likewise there ARE cultural differences. Most countries where only native Americans, Asian, Subsaharan (if you wish we can distinguish Bantu, Afro_asiatic or other families), Germanic, Latin people reside have different levels of technological and social-organisational transformation. Perhaps it would be better to assume that's fine, that Subsaharans, Natives, Autronesians did NOT NEED to develop further, subsistance was materially assured whereas Germanic, Niponic, Korean needed to simply to survive (also because the British forced Japan, Korea and China to assume capitalism or perish colllectively)
      We do have legitimate grievances (a taxi driver in Congo should earn as much as an equally qualififed taxi driver in Frankfurt) but at some point we will have to stop. We can't winge for centuries. BTW we are on the verge of forming a new species, so we better bring justice soon or that ship is sailed.

    The root of this problem we have with humanity is that we have given ourselves various excuses for not seeing other people as people like we are. This is the only way we can hate one another. This is the only way we can go to war and kill one another. This is the only way that we can separate out people, not to appreciate the magnificent diversity we have as members of the species Homo sapiens, but in order to divide us so that a few people can subjugate us and force us into perpetual division and perpetual war. I don't care who you think is the primary culprit. This absurdity is being perpetuated upon the whole world and we are at the point of going extinct. We are at the point of going extinct and we have allowed money, that has never been alive, to literally decide whose lives matter and whether or not the lives of our entire species, plus many others, will be able to survive in the only planet we have ever known. At this point, we have to realize that it's absurd. Does profit matter more than people?

    Interested in how he does not disprove the function of intelligence tests and the results (which are about as concrete as any phycology science can get). Instead he is maligning the test as racism. The tests provide raw unbias data. The only racism would be how you interpret that data, like if you thought biology explained the difference. Most genetic studies do not point to biological differences; variance within a group is greater than the differences between.
    I don't think anyone knows definitively what explains the difference but the best theory I ever heard was cultural habits are the biggest factor - the life choices of the individuals.

    • @danilthorstensson8902
      @danilthorstensson8902 4 года назад

      Adam O'Brien This sounds like you are just repeating what Jordan Peterson used to say about IQ tests. It’s never great when someone can point to specific videos/sources that people got their information from. You should think about having a more diverse source for your information.
      And using black/Latino culture (whatever you mean by that) to explain disparities is implicitly suggesting that their culture is inferior, since most would accept that intelligence is a universal value. The solution that comes forth from that explanation is that blacks and Latinos should become more White/Asian in their culture.
      You also claim that IQ tests provide raw unbiased data. But you have to actually look at the structure of the tests themselves (and the motivations of the people who constructed the tests). The tests cannot be unbiased because there is no objective measure of intelligence. The history of psychology up into recent decades is mired with eugenicist and racist thinking and theory, and the IQ test has this same origin. Even though it has slightly changed over the years, it still uses the types of questions that are geared towards a particular culture and that are easier if you have a particular Western education, which blacks are less likely to have due in large part to poverty. The reason why blacks and Latinos are less likely to succeed in a test geared more towards a White and Western conception of intelligence is not biological but environmental: we have to ask the question of why our standard of intelligence is defined by White Westerners and also what is keeping blacks and Latinos back from succeeding at it. Life choices are determined by economics in the sense that it is more difficult for blacks and Latinos to afford the western education that is required to do well on the tests. It’s not like blacks are taught to join gangs and skip school (which is partly what’s implied when reactionaries use the “life choices” explanation). They are pressured into these things because of their economic and social position in society and by various forms of racism inherent in the social and economic structure. History obviously plays a major role in this as well, which conservatives downplay or ignore, instead trying to focus on the present moment. Well, if the average black man has to start further back than the average white man in the race for education and success, and has to overcome certain structural obstacles, that makes it more difficult to succeed on tests of western intelligence like the IQ test, not to mention other standards that we often use to define success.

Goes to show you what 'tests' really qualify as. We all have our own strengths and place and purpose, sometimes it's hard to see an individuals quality, even to themselves. Evolution takes time, and some people evolve quicker in one aspects but not another. It is almost impossible to quantify. Love is the panacea, first for ourselves, then so we can love others truly, and balanced. The racism and hatred in this world comes from not loving themselves, from feeling inferior ourselves. We hate others because we hate ourselves, and have the sickness of separation.
