  • This channel features Japanese traditional arts & crafts.
Traditional crafts in Japan, some of which has history of over 1000 years, have been inherited by committed craftspeople, from generation to generation, being handed down unique and specialized technique.
They have produced and updated their products to meet people's needs of the era, making the most of their outstanding ability to keep their products practical, useful and beautiful.
They make their products only in the way their production is sustainably possible, largely from natural material. It is largely because their operation started way before our modern lifestyle came along. In this age, with a lot of unreasonably-cheap, easily-disposable products (mainly made from plastic) available to people all over the world. Plus, as Japanese domestic market overall has been shrinking at such a fast pace, it has become no longer possible for them to keep production profitably, or even in a way they can make their living.
We, amazed and fascinated by the beauty and greatness of their technique and the way of thinking behind, are trying to support their operation, through re-updating their products to sustainably suit lifestyle of people today and introduce them to the broader market, outside Japan.
As one of the ways to achieve our goal, we are directly shooting their operation, so that as many people in the world as possible can share the same amazement as we felt when we first saw their operation with our own eyes.
    ----------
In this movie, we visit Kikyogama in Kameoka Region of Kyoto. Surrounded by rich nature, Emu Nakai, young potter who started Kikyogama on her own hand, is creating unique, strong and beautiful works in one of the most traditional ways of making ceramic, called Yakishime.
In Yakishime, no glaze is used to cover the ceramic. Instead, works are put in the kiln burnt with woods and they are covered and colored by the ash flying in the kiln. The kiln needs to be fired until it reaches 1,200 degrees Celsius only with wood fire. It takes some days. The duration varies depending on the weather and the works contained, but the craftsperson needs to continue until she can get the appropriate temperature. The color and pattern cannot be completely expected by the craftspeople herself. This movie shot whole process of her work.
I am very happy that I can share the surprise and amazement I felt when very, very beautiful dishes, made completely only with the power of nature came out from the kiln.
    0:20 knead clay
1:00 form a dish with the wheel
2:10 form a bowl with the wheel
2:50 form a pinch bowl with the wheel
3:54 put works into the kiln
    7:02 fire the kiln
    8:26 reach 1080 degrees Celcius
    11:01 keep working at night
14:43 open the kiln and take works out
    16:08 shine works
