As someone that just learned to foil with my kite I would say your face probably won’t be the problem. I prefer to wear a wetsuit because I took several blades to the legs and one to the ribs when I tried to show off. The advice I got afterwords which I have not really tried yet is to always try to push off with your front foot when falling. This should keep the foil in the water. Also, try to hold on to the kite bar to carry you away from the foil. Falling back off of the board was my biggest problem as this caused some whiplash and got the foils wrapped in the lines a couple of times. I hope to never do that again! I just barely avoided a real kitemare.
