That's the most professional auto repair video I've seen! Comprehensive, but no wasted time with chit chat or needless information - Great photography too - shows what is essential, but doesn't get us dizzy with excess camera movement.
This can be done without a trans jack. If you are able to have a second person, that's your best bet. I've heard of just lowering the diff down a little which works fine if you are in a hurry. But if you have time, I highly recommend removing the diff. It will give you a chance to take a look at things that might need to be replaced while your down there.
Thanks for the awesome DIY for a 4wd. Love the professional footage where you can actually see the fasteners and not some footage where someone points to a bolt in the shadows that you can't see. You actually gave me a great idea... My 6.0L Escalade with 172K miles has been leaking for a while and I am finally annoyed enough to replace the gasket. I spotted you putting that nice shiny new oil pan on and I thought to myself "who likes drilling out rivets where metal flakes contaminate everything and then having to completely clean the inside and outside of the original pan caked with sludge, plus the sealing surfaces." I have a home garage and no proper area for cleanup that doesn't burn a lot of time for a job like this. THANK YOU... I just ordered a brand new pan so I don't need to make a mess I will regret in my garage, driveway or on my property! Thanks again for a very detailed and organized video tutorial!
Maybe he does, maybe he doesn't. Take the time to post your own efficient video instead of criticizing someone else's video with no beneficial informative information given as to what was needed or not needed. Everyone gets paid by the hour btw, and a quote for the job is typically given by anyone worth a hoot.
I have an oil gasket leak I know I can do this it seems so easy just under 30 mins !!! lol I bet you if I brought this to a mechanic it would cost 450 to 650 for a part that cost 20.00 So i will do it myself I may buy the oil pan not sure but I know I can do it I have done other engine repairs. Thank you ! Great job ! and not to forget the video person ! excellent Video ! 2003 Chevy Tahoe 4.8L 4wd mileage 310,000
Did you do this job? I have a 2004 Escalade and need to change the gasket because there is a leak I can’t find. I seen another video and it looks like the guy didn’t disconnect the drive shaft, pitman arms or front axels and he got the job done. I’m just wondering if we only need to remove the cross member and lower the differential.
I've honestly never seen it done by taking out the front differential, usually I just disconnect and let it hang being supported. Plenty of room to pull the pan.
I was able to remove the front diff without removing the cross member. Just spun it a bit like a football inside the cavity and it slipped out. Not sure if the cross member removal is necessary for this repair tho. I just replaced the diff.
Nearly the exact same procedure. If you have rack and pinion steering, remove the bolts and lower it you don’t have to remove the lines or take it out completely. That’s all that is different from 4wd and 2wd.
I couldn’t get to some if the bolts on the oil pan so i tried to remove the differential but my bolt was stuck and i couldn’t get it passed some of the lines next to the top bolt. I don’t know how to get passed it….
What would the price be around for a oil pan on a 06 Tahoe z71 4WD? I was told $1,000 because they have to take out the front differential in order to do it. Thanks.
Damn I would not mind to do all that but the fact I have to do it on dirt. Is a no for me and I would n need the torque specs for the drive shaft. And anything else he marked off with an X And also removing the factory revits it’s going to be a road block for me. I’m just curious to see how much a shop is going to charge. Because I already have the gasket.
Replace my gasket twice and leaks from the the top last bolt on the oil pan on the driver side right above the oil filter and right across on the passenger side from that corner right near the starter bolt what could be the issue I rtv all 4 corners on bottom of engine but still seeps
Majority of this work was totally unnecessary. Not to say I know more than this mechanic which is totally not the case. It's how you have been taught. All you need to do is drop the diff a few inches in order for the pan to clear
+@ErnieLegendDJ The part in this video fits your application, and the install should be the same or similar. Buy this part on 1AAuto.com: 1aau.to/m/Shop-TRQ
Thats a plastic shield that goes around the starter nose. If it leaks there, you may have a rear main seal or cover leaking. Trans needs to come out for inspection.
Rear Main Seal. Remove the transmission and flex plate and remove the rear engine cover. Replace the rear main seal and rear cover gasket. They sell the rear cover with the seal, gasket, and new bolts and its not that expensive. Should take you around 4 hours if you’ve never done that before. You will need a transmission jack or make a flat platform with 2x4’s to put on the jack so you can remove the transmission.
I don't mind working on my vehicles been doing it for 30 years as a back yard mechanic. But I'm having someone do my oil pick up tube and O ring in my Silverado 5.3 4x4! Lol way to much work for my Saturday
Possibly.... But if I add up all the work that I did and added this at Least 5 to 6 K on a 2003 Tahoe. I saved massive amounts of money. I am assuming this took within 3.5 to 6 hours by a tech me 8 to 9 due to other crap that may break while working on the olde rust bucket .. I'm very confident!
+That Guy’s Garage Thanks for watching! The proper way to perform this repair is to pull everything like in the video. That is going to make the repair much easier to do as you will have much better access.
@@TRQ that’s what I figured. I’m replacing basically everything in the front suspension so I’ll just add dropping the diff to it. I asked because I’ve watched a lot of videos where folks just loosen and drop the whole axle a few inches and wrestle the pan out. Great videos!
I work in a shop and have done many of these. When you are flagging hours for a living, you find quicker and more efficient ways of doing things. Just lower the axle, disconnect the wire harness and this gives you another half to 3/4 inch in clearance. It slides out easily in everyone I have done. Much easier than wrestling with the axle. ALWAYS remove pick-up tube (3 bolts) and replace orange O-ring when you do this job.

If you are having leaks around the gasket, try re-torquing all the bolts before going through all this. . . . Worked for me ! 😃

To heck with this reapair, looks like I’m dumping a quart a week into ol smoky
Lol
Don't forget that E brake before the drive shaft , if you're working on the ground .

+Steven Kosier Thanks for the feedback! 1aau.to/m/Shop-TRQ
was this a nightmare to fix?
You dont have to take out the drive shaft or the differential only lower the diff a little
I had thought that was the case. Going to be doing this on my truck soon and was hoping to not have to fully drop the f. Diffy
This is true. Just did it today.
Chris. You're the reason I read the comments. You kept me from wasting a lot of time.
@chris ranaudo was this vid for a 4x4?
I agree And you should always replace the oil pickup tube o-ring when doing this
This guy adds way more work than what's needed. I bet he gets paid by the hour.

Thank u for u taking your time to do this teach us how to do this job, is a lot of work but worth it i love this.
You guys legit don't skip a beat good shit guys 💯
What was the reason for changing out a GM oil pan for a China one? I didn't notice any thing wrong with original GM pan! Good video though!

It's labor that bites you in the ass no the part, that is if you go to an honest shop
Will definitely not take you less than 30 minutes to do this😂
Its actually a 7/16 for the u-joint shaft bolts
If you want to save time look for videos that show letting front diff hang down supported by a jack and slide the pan out. Way faster.

Can this be done in a home garage without lifting the truck or just using a jack stand? I dont have those nifty hoist or transmission lift.
Yes you can do it at home
You are the best I seen do this and words for words thanks you should do a Master Class
do you have to remove the driveshaft or can you work around ?
Outstanding! Flow was nice and words were very articulate!
Will idler arm removal require alignment?
How much time does this take for a novice/intermediate mechanic...
I was able to remove the front diff without removing the cross member. Just spun it a bit like a football inside the cavity and it slipped out. Not sure if the cross member removal is necessary for this repair tho. I just replaced the diff.
Excellent tutorial.
Where can I find the p/n for the longer crossmember bolts and nuts. Mine has one missing.
U made that look so simple, what’s the average going rate for a gasket change on a 2003 Chevy Silverado
Make one for a rear wheel drive please.
Nearly the exact same procedure. If you have rack and pinion steering, remove the bolts and lower it you don’t have to remove the lines or take it out completely. That’s all that is different from 4wd and 2wd.
2wd is easy, you dont have to take anything off to get the pan off.
VERY. VERY. IMPORTANT. RE-CONNECT THE GROUND WIRE TO THE PAN OR YOUR TRUCK WILL NOT START!
What was the reason for the oil pan replacement?
Is it really necessary outside of dropping the support beam in the beginning out the way to drop the pan??? I looked and it doesn’t seem necessary
Is this for a 4x4?
Thank you! Almost all the videos on RUclips are for RWD trucks. 🤦🏻
I couldn’t get to some if the bolts on the oil pan so i tried to remove the differential but my bolt was stuck and i couldn’t get it passed some of the lines next to the top bolt. I don’t know how to get passed it….
would this be the same process on a 2005 avalanche?
What would the price be around for a oil pan on a 06 Tahoe z71 4WD? I was told $1,000 because they have to take out the front differential in order to do it. Thanks.
I paid 320.00 at moons auto service in capitol heights MD they do great work

Great video helped me it done!
Very informative and helpful 👍. Thanks TRD! By far the best video for the job.ty ,Adrian Goedhart

Lol yup so I took it to the shop I know to have them do it , only cost me $400 dollars and wells worth it.
Is this the same process for a 2000 suburban 4x4?
+@ErnieLegendDJ The part in this video fits your application, and the install should be the same or similar. Buy this part on 1AAuto.com: 1aau.to/m/Shop-TRQ
Is there a name for the wire bracket on the front of the oil pan?
im doing this next weekend to my tahoe
Whats the black cover called at 15:13 ? My oil leaks from right there
That right by the flywheel. Probably leaking from the rear main seal or from the oil sending unit
Thats a plastic shield that goes around the starter nose. If it leaks there, you may have a rear main seal or cover leaking. Trans needs to come out for inspection.
I just did a repair on the oil pan gasket you don’t have to do any of that must be a newer model
5:28 can’t you just tilt the pan and pull it out you have to remove all of that?
Wish I had air like that
I did everything as you say on the video but still leaking from the starter side
Rear main?
Rear Main Seal. Remove the transmission and flex plate and remove the rear engine cover. Replace the rear main seal and rear cover gasket. They sell the rear cover with the seal, gasket, and new bolts and its not that expensive. Should take you around 4 hours if you’ve never done that before. You will need a transmission jack or make a flat platform with 2x4’s to put on the jack so you can remove the transmission.
you need head gaskets
How many hours did you charge for this? Is $300 for oil pan change in a 2x4 1500 5.3 2000 Suburban a good price?
Not bad at all
That's a great shop price.
WAY TO MUCH WORK..
+SO ST.LOUIS Thanks for watching our video! 1aau.to/m/Shop-TRQ

Can I just drop the axle a couple inches instead of pulling the whole thing?

NO WAY ! short cuts nah what if you put it together and it leaked.. been there done that

What a supreme Pain in the Ass.
Not looking forward to this... Quoted 6-700, now I see why.! Smh
Dude is doing waaaaaayyyy to much!!!😂 I would love to know how much he charged the customer!!!😱
So... pretty much impossible using jack stands and a floor jack? LOL
