Also, with checking if the cake batter is cooked, in backing, we use a skewer and poke the middle of the thing you are baking. If it comes out clean, aka not with wet batter, stuck to it, then it should be cooked all the way through because the middle of the cake takes the longest to bake and for the heat to reach the centre of. If it comes out slightly gooy and clumps at attached, then depending on what the recipe says, i.e., if it's meant to be a gooy cake. Then, it needs a little longer until it comes out clean and dry. Just a few tips for any future baking.
I wonder why it had only 1/2 cup of sugar? A quick look at my chocolate cake recipes shows around 2 cups of sugar. I wonder if that’s why it tasted salty? Also, when your pan is bigger than the recipe recommends, it will spread out the batter and make thin layers, so your cake rose fine, it just wasn’t enough batter. My favorite part is how much you liked the 7-minute frosting! It’s yummy isn’t it? BTW - I laughed my head off as usual watching your video. I look forward to Fridays because I know I’m going to get a good laugh from your hilarious videos!! 😂😂😂
Yeah I definitely think I got my measurements mixed up a little bit, I find cups so confusing 😅😅 Ah and glad you enjoyed it Judy! I was so gutted my cake tasted salty though 😭😭😆😆
The cider they meant from the US is probably Apple Cider, which is really common in the fall, and often served warm! Its also not an alcoholic beverage! I think you CAN get alcoholic ciders in the US now, but before I moved to Norway in 2011 I had never heard of cider in that context haha
Oh Ant, another one of great video.. Again never fails to crack me up. Honestly, your face when you started eating it - its like you've been eating wasps! Sorry that it tasted salty - I do wonder if that's down to the lard, you'd need to check the salt amount on the package. Think you used a hooooooooge pan, try and invest a smaller one for future baking (that is if you're not being put off it again!!) But still, you gave it all .. Thanks for the laugh, Ant the Rant ;) 🤣
Haha glad you enjoyed it Traci! 😁 Yeah possibly the lard, possibly my awful skills 😅😅 And no problem! Glad you enjoyed it! Don't think I'll be baking for a while! 🤣🤣
I enjoyed the hell out of this video!😂 I believe the salty taste comes from the baking soda. I baked a cake as a kid and added too much baking soda and it was beautiful but awfully salty. Thanks for sharing!!
Awww A for effort 👏🏻👍🏻😃 but if you'd used a smaller tin it wouldn't of gone like a bisquit. Keep trying you will conquer baking love. That punch looked yummy 👏🏻👍🏻😃🤗🥰🥰
I haven't laughed so hard in ages Ant! Your cake looked like a huge biscuit! I was in fits of giggles when you presented it because it was just so flat! The taste came from the recipe, I think you may have added the wrong measurement of salt. Translating US recipes into UK measurements is notoriously difficult. Don't give up on baking Ant, because you are getting way better at it. The cake looked really good and was properly cooked and it wasnt burned or raw, so in essence you did extremely well. God bless you and those you love. Have a great weekend!
Haha thanks Carly! Yeah the US to UK measurments gets me every time!! If it was all in grams I would have had no bother at all 😅😅 And I hope you have a lovely weekend too! 😊😊
I'm so sorry your beautiful masterpiece of a cake went wrong! Of course I had to lmao. Invest in a 9" pan and you won't end up with a flat cake. I agree with others in that your salt conversion was off a bit. Don't give up either, look how far you've come!
Hey Ant, thanks for another classic edition of 'Cooking with Ant'! I'm no good at baking either, so I have no idea what went wrong - but at least the cake looked really good, and the punch turned out well And what a treat to see 'The Macarena' - were you busy doing it all round the studio?!! 🤣🤣
Ah no problem! 😁😁 Oh I just can't seem to master a decent cake! 😅😅 I will one day! Just not right now 😆😆 Haha and of course, breaking out the classic school disco dance moves! 🤣🤣
@@AnthonyCrammen I'm sure there's a perfect cake in you 😁😁 And I bet you're a whizz on the dance floor 😆 Hope your weekend is going well - even if it's one you're having to work! 😊😊
I have a tip for you to get the best baked cake... Set the timer to sound at 10 minutes before recommended bake time so you can test it with a toothpick in the middle and it comes out clean. You're testing earlier than the recommended time so you'll get to know your particular oven and you won't be under/over cook 😉 Also, if you're using a glass or dark pan then reduce the oven temperature by 25°F... Otherwise it will surely get too dark or burnt 👍 AAAAAND there's no difference between wet and dry measurements!! Ingredients are calculated by volume so they're the same... For instance, if you need 3 Tbsps of milk - that's equal to a 1/4 Cup. The only difference is in the actual cups you're using - the ("liquid") cups always has a pour spout on it, whilst the ("dry") cups do not always have one. 😁👍 You're so much fun to watch 😂❤
We have two kinds of cider in the US: alcoholic (hard cider) and non-alcoholic. I bet they meant the non-alcoholic kind, unless they said "hard cider." I cant stant hard cider but I love the non-alcoholic kind, its so refreshing! Sorry the cake didnt turn out. Glad the frosting did though!
A punch with no alcohol?!?! 😱😱😱 Oh people would be flipping tables in the UK if that happened 😅😅 Oh I was well gutted, everything was fine a part from the salty flavour 🙈🙈
lol at your face when you took the first bite. Then added more pain with the second bite. Pretty sure you added too much salt. But the frosting/icing looked good and the cider probably came out really good too. Lmao watching this. ❤❤❤ your videos. 🥰 make another cake in smaller pan and 1/2 teaspoon salt next time. Don’t give up. ☺️
Well, I learned something today. I'm american, I've never baked from scratch, so I've only heard about shortening. For some reason I thought it was a type of powder and turns out I had no clue what it was lol. But, I looked it up and you're right, it's a type of fat. Another funny video, can't wait for your next one. You always make me laugh and get me out of my depression funk. Btw you questioning what the baking words meant (which I also didn't know what they meant) reminded me schitts creek when they had to fold in the cheese and they didn't know what that meant lol.
Idk if uk this but you said its hard to tell if a cake is done in the middle... If you poke a toothpick in the center and pull it out, if it comes out clean its fully cooked! Hope that helps!😊
A big iced Cookie lol. Baking soda, which you put in, also can add to saltiness. Too much can turn the taste of something bitter. Baking soda is also an ingredient of Baking Powder. Cream of Tarter is the other ingredient of Baking Powder. The cream of tarter for the frosting is for helping the egg white you whipped to stay fluffed and stable. You can test your next cake * don't gimme that look and roll those eyes, You know You'll do it again 😆, use a wooden tooth pick to check the middle of the cake when getting close to time. If it comes out clean, it's done. If still wet/sticking on the pick, bake longer.
Ahhhhh, you bake just like I do 😂. My son called my last attempt ‘Disaster Bars’ and the name has stuck but they actually taste lovely now I’ve stopped burning them. Yours looked Fab. Better for us it was funny and disgusting. If it had tasted nice we would have been jealous.
Gaaaaaaaagh! I did that not long ago (and I've been baking for DECADES)! I had a plastic bag of pickling salt that I mistook for sugar and totally ruined a cake!!!
eh, just scrape that icing off of the cake and eat that instead LOL Might I suggest a box cake? Oh honey I am sorry your cake was so salty. Honestly though, it might have been the fat you used. To me it looked like butter or margarine which is no where near shortening.
That's a Halloween cake that should be called trick or treat cake. Your tricked into thinking your getting a lovely chocolate cake treat, until you bite into it🤢😆. Such a shame Ant 'cos it was one of your better looking cakes. Lick the topping off before your throw it in the bin.
I absolutely love it when you try to bake you only made one small mistake the oil. You didn't use enough that's why your cake taste salty that oil should have been liquid therefore you didn't use enough that's also why your cake didn't rise take it for me professional Baker over 30 years you gave it a good try just one little mistake.
😭😭😭😭 Your little flat cake looked perfectly cooked, I was sure it would be delicious...Almost...you'll get it next time..better than your 3 tiers of goo 🤭🤣🤣
😂 the spices you're using is what makes this an "Autumn/Fall or Winter" cake 😋 Doesn't Europe have squeezed lemon juice? It's not a sweet drink, it's literally the juice of lemons... I can't believe you used salt instead of sugar 😂😂😂 I keep mine far away from each other so I don't do that 😂
Holy moly. I am here early for one of your videos. I have to go to bed. Best Wishes Salty cake. Ugh. Maybe to much baking powder and baking soda. Suspicious of your "shortening" sodium content. Really sorry for you. Does my presence matter.

The double boil method is for tempering the chocolate. It's a method used to make chocolate super smooth.
Also, with checking if the cake batter is cooked, in backing, we use a skewer and poke the middle of the thing you are baking.
