A picnic, with passengers and 1 fur baby, during a sea trail. Couldn’t get any better than that. You have one awesome boat young man.
You know when I was 12 and 13 years old and I am 63 now, I read popular mechanics. I started to build a gyrocopter and a submarine. But there was no RUclips or anything else to help you along. Also the parents didn't have any money so I was frustrated! Watching you do these things as an inspiration to me even at my age. All the best.
You have plenty of time to get the projects going again.
You should look into DIY drone builds. Sounds like something you'd enjoy!
Never too late to have fun
I have built two hovercraft in my older age however. Also working on a ground effect flying wing. Loved popular mechanics magazines!

Yes you have a planing hull versus a displacement hull. A planing hull won't go slow efficiently and a planing hull won't go fast efficiently.
Great ambition !

I have the exact same Crestliner! My grandpa bought it brand new in '57 and it's been in the family ever since. My mom and her siblings grew up learning to boat in it hear in central MN. When I was like 12, the boat was kinda living leaned up behind the garage of my grandmas cabin. I was able to purchase it from her for the low price of raking the cabin's yard that fall(about 4 hours of work). I helped my dad fix it up, as well as a trailer for it. Then we picked up a 70's 18 horse Johnson for 20 bucks and rebuilt it. Present day it still has the camo paint job from when I used it to duck hunt in high school. In high school I had also kind of turned it into a mini bass boat. I added casting platforms across the bench's with storage compartments. 17 years later and I still have it, and I absolutely love it!
perftect for Ft Lauderdale (assuming you wont get swamped by bigger vessels). you could pop it in the water and just cruise to dinner or brunch with the family. since ~90% of the intercoastal waterway in Lauderdale is idle speed only, you would be doing close to the speed limit 👍
@John Johnson itll probably be easier than piloting my jet boat against the current at idle speeds (jet boats cant steer without some throttle applied)
Peter: It's a 14 foot boat. It doesn't really need an inboard motor.
Also Peter: Installs Azipod in 14 foot boat.
Hanging a couple of trolling motors off the back would have worked just fine without having to drill through the hull or add a rudder.
@@butlerproman Maybe so, but given that he put a pair of those trolling motors in there, I was hoping he'd delete the rudders entirely, run the motors through a pivoting stuffing box, and use them as the steering. Would be unique, if nothing else.
@@cudak888 Yeah, I think it would have been simpler if he made the trolling motors steer, either through the hull or outside of it. But, it's his build so I guess he can do as he wishes. :)
The Azimuth pods were my only suggestion. Ditch the rudders and have a boat that is way more maneuverable. They are probably mounted at the best spot for optimum use. One cool way to make it faster is to have made it a hydrofoil. There are some cool hydrofoil kits that came out in the '50s and ''60s for this hull size. If anyone can do it, it's Peter!
@@Jonathan.D Seconded on the hydrofoil :-D

Can you explain a bit more about the power consumption? How much Watts are you pulling at which speed? What voltage will your system run on?
1:40 You dont STRIP paint from bot hulls... the copper in the paint is what protects it from sea/plantlife. When re-painting, all youre supposed to do is sand the existing paint, and then paint over it. This way, the new paint has something to latch onto.
Also: You need to use BOTTOM PAINT which has the copper in it. Yes its expensive, but thats how you save your boat.
Edit: The copper paint is only needed for the BOTTOM paint, not the whole thing.
Nope! Copper paint on aluminum will cause galvanic corrosion and corrode the aluminum. He used copper-free antifouling like he's supposed to.

It's fun how this will actually be super cool as you will never run out of fuel, could go for days as long as you have food and water
Nope...
Unfortunately, the numbers don't work out.
Those trolling motors appear to use a 24 volt power supply, based on the configuration of the batteries shown in the video.
24 volts x 30 amperes = 720 watts
The current drawn from the motors at the more efficient speed exceed the output of the solar panels.
I estimate space for a maximum of 200 watts worth of solar panels.
The discord notification at 5:22 confused me when I have no new messages
Woah a discord notification! someone remembers me!!!!!

Pete, the only way this scaled down model boat is gonna float in the Gulf Of Mexico is under zero stress from the wind (very unlikely) and more importantly, very little wave activity (it's a GULF, good luck!).
My experience shooting boats and jet skis in the Bay area reveals your best bet is at Yucky Beach, a breathtaking spot for filming and shooting water sports from a surprisingly basic location. Problem is, many people get stuck there when they either drop off their boats or try load them up on their trailers.
You see, Yucky Beach is muddy and not a place for newbies to try their skills at guiding a boat trailer into the chasm that is the Atlantic Ocean. My wife Elizabeth hates Yucky Beach because she Jack Knifed our truck & trailer when we got stuck in Tampa Bay mud @ Yucky Beach. I love Yucky Beach because it's provided the most incredible photos of my family I'll cherish for the rest of my God given life.
Pete, seeing how the water in the Tampa Bay area is now toxic, maybe an awesome, easy access water way would produce a better visual output? I know a spot 45 minutes North of Tampa that's picturesque, completely free and on most days, 100% vacant!

I genuinely loved how much your parents seemed to love the boat haha
13:50 the most wholesome sh*t I've seen all week
I love how people take all the old stuff to make it better than it was
You should have everything vintage on the boat for instance a 📻 from the 1950s
Ducted props, & maybe even using the duct rings as rudders too. Hint, a transom stern is made for planing speeds, not for displacement speeds; it's less efficient at slow speeds. Think, canoe or sailboat-type hull...
I love how these are also son and father projects. So so wholesome seeing your dad help with it.
When you put paint stripper on, cover it with plastic and let it sit for a while. It works great!
congrats for your honesty and shout outs to TIPS FROM A SHIPWRIGHT a lot of channels wouldn't and don't do this
You might want to look into ways to improve prop efficiency. Generally boat efficiency drops with speed a ton. That's why cargo ships go a steady slow speed. With solar power, efficiently transferring power from the propeller to the water will be essential. Possibly some ducts around the propellers would help cut down the turbulence at higher speeds
Actually a jetski type propulsion might give better results
as you learned, trolling motors are not meant for speed. It's more akin to a tractor over a race car. They will push a big bass boat just as fast as a little kayak.
Very cool project.
Makes me happy to see young men doing this kind of stuff😎🇺🇸
make Buzz Lightyear fall with style!
