    Recessed genes become more visible with stressed corn. So the variations are nothing to worry about. You should see my Hopi blue this year 😅

    The striated ear is likely due color genetics if it affects the whole ear. But it pretty easy to know if it’s mold or a development issue. Just crack a kernel open and if it looks normal you’re good. I grew ‘painted mountain’ this year and about a quarter of those ears are striated. I also tried to grow ‘blue clarage’ and it was so damn hot when it was pollinating that we didn’t even get an ear off the entire 50 ft plot. I’m also obsessed with getting a blue flour corn to work for me, but I’m trying red next year. ‘Bloody butcher’ and ‘floriani flint’.

    Hi Travis, ordinarily to maintain genetic purity you would be better to remove a few seeds off a lot of ears. What I used to do is buy one pack of seed (same kind) to mix with my saved seed since I wasn’t growing a enough. I think heirloom corns tend to throw an off colored ear once in a while. I recommend Susan Ashworth’s book Seed to Seed.

    Hey Travis, I’ve been raising chickens for over 30 years, I actually was a Poultry Science major in college, and whole corn is actually excellent to feed to them along with their normal feed. Corn starts to oxidize and lose some of its nutritional value when it’s cracked so feeding whole corn gives them the most bang for the buck nutritionally. Also whole corn works their gizzard which is also really good for them because it keeps it strong and they are able to grind their food up more completely when they have a strong gizzard. I have about 200 chickens and whole corn, especially in winter, makes up about 20 percent of the feed mix we use and they love it.

    When you get the grinder, make sure you purchase the correct sieves to separate the chicken scratch, grits, meal, and flour.

  • @dvrmte
    @dvrmte 9 дней назад +1

    Yes! Plant that corn in mid-March and you can likely have it in the shed before the hurricanes arrive. Hickory Cane originated in S. Georgia. That might be a good one to try if your blue corn can't cut it. LOL I've grown both Hickory King and Hickory Cane. The ears of Hickory King were longer and slimmer but the stalks were about the same size.
    I often harvest field corn before it's completely dry if there's been a lot of rain. I husk it in the field with a husking glove with a metal hook on the palm. The hook rips the shucks open while you snap the ear with the other hand. I then bag it in mesh bags and put it under a shed to dry. I store the culls separately and use them for animal feed if they're not moldy.
    I do believe your blue corn is a cross between Hickory King and Ohio Blue Clarage. The striations in your corn remind me of that variety "Rotten Clarage"! No joke intended. The striations resemble moldy corn. It's hard to tell if it's rotten or not. I really don't think you should be planting half Ohio Yankee corn in S. Georgia. LOL

    Is there any concern about cross pollination with the peas for keeping seed?

    • @LazyDogFarm
      @LazyDogFarm  6 дней назад

      I don't think so since they're self-pollinating. It's possible, but I don't think it's very likely.

    Thanks Travis for another enlightening video. I’ve got a question if someone could be so kind to inform me, as an Australian I’ve always heard about you guys eating grits, but what is grits made up of, and what does it look like? You can imagine having never seen it, my mind is in a flap regarding grits.

    • @petersoos498
      @petersoos498 9 дней назад +2

      Dried whole kernel corn that is ground fine is flour, not as fine is meal, and courser is used for 'grits'. Placed in water or broth and a bit of salt and brought to a simmer while stirring until thick. Can be eaten with butter on top with eggs, breakfast meats or shrimp. Plenty of YT videos on preparation.
      There's books written on it's prep so I'm sure I've only touched the surface of the ways to prepare it.
